Beijing

From the Central Axis and hutongs to universities, international business and technology parks—read the capital through your purpose.

Understanding Beijing beyond “large” and “old”

Beijing matters not simply for the number of monuments, but for how state, city, neighbourhood and personal life have long overlapped in one space.

  • The Central Axis joins politics, ritual and urban direction — The north–south axis, symmetry, palaces, altars and public buildings express an ideal capital order. It is not a sightseeing boulevard but an urban structure continually used and transformed.
  • Hutongs are not a uniform nostalgic backdrop — Old-city renewal aims both to retain hutong-courtyard form and to improve sanitation, utilities and local services. Enter a hutong as a lived neighbourhood first, then distinguish commercial streets, officially open cou…
  • National narratives and ordinary life happen together — State institutions, universities, media, cultural organisations and ordinary neighbourhoods share the city. Everyday Beijing also means long commutes, markets, schools, hospitals and local parks—not only monuments.
  • There is no single “Beijinger personality” — Local families, long-term migrants, students, public- and private-sector workers and international residents all shape Beijing. Avoid replacing specific generations, occupations and neighbourhoods with “Beijingers are a…
  • Old-city conservation and modern expansion coexist — Central-axis conservation, historic-district renewal, rail expansion, new towns and industry parks change Beijing simultaneously. Ask who uses space, how function changes and where living costs move.
  • Do not explain every interaction through one “Beijinger personality” — The same words change with age, occupation, setting and familiarity. For directions or services, state the place, time and need clearly. Filming people, entering courtyards or requesting personal information requires se…

Business in Beijing: put a real project through an AI or digital-entertainment workflow

This section provides two clear civilian-industry entry points: Haidian artificial intelligence and Beijing digital entertainment. Before travelling, choose one real project and define its inputs, outputs, budget, timing, approver and prohibited boundaries. On site, verify the actual team, product revision, data or content rights, delivery records and contractual responsibility rather than treating demos, reputation or promotion as evidence.

  • HAIDIAN AI · Bring one civilian workflow and test whether the model can deliver reliably — Before the visit, prepare a one-page brief covering the current workflow, users, data categories and lawful source, any personal information, expected output, prohibited uses, human-review point, success metrics, budget and launch date. Bring a de-identified test set with expected answers. Ask the provider to use the agreed samples and record the model and API revision, deployment, data retention and deletion, subprocessors, logs, error handling, latency, concurrency, unit cost and upgrade rules. A demo proves only performance on those samples at that time; it does not prove accuracy at scale, continuing availability or compliance of your particular use.
  • AI CONTRACT · Put data, versioning, acceptance and exit into one responsibility schedule — The contract should define rights in input and training material; rights to prompts and outputs; confidentiality and personal-information responsibility; whether data may be retained or reused for training; deletion and export deadlines; availability and performance measures; acceptance samples; price; model-change notice; human review; handling of infringement or security incidents; exit and data migration. Filings, certifications, papers, awards, customer names and public cases prove only their specific facts. They are not interchangeable and do not make the customer deployment automatically compliant.
  • DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT · Trace rights and distribution for one game, video or digital-content project — Before the visit, define the content format, audience age, platforms, territories, languages, business model, budget, milestones and final deliverables. List the source of scripts, characters, artwork, photographs, music, fonts, voice and performance, software tools and AI-generated material. In meetings, verify the actual producer, outsourcing chain, version control, content review, protection of minors, user and performer personal data, advertising or payment rules, release eligibility, platform revenue share, takedown process and after-sales responsibility. A public trailer, view-count screenshot, award or platform feature does not by itself prove a clean chain of title, actual revenue, retention or continuing distribution rights.
  • CONTENT CONTRACT · Write the rights chain, distribution scope, settlement and takedown process explicitly — The contract should specify deliverables, source files, revision rounds, acceptance, credits, confidentiality and ownership or licence terms, including territory, duration, media, exclusivity, sublicensing, adaptation, derivatives, revenue share and settlement, asset retention, infringement claims, emergency takedown and use after termination. Keep contracts, licences, invoices, version files and delivery records for every asset. “The supplier says it owns the rights” or “it is online” is not usable evidence. Confirm market access, content, network, data, tax and cross-border distribution requirements separately with the relevant professionals and authorities.
  • LINKED CLUSTER · Beijing Daxing medical devices — Daxing links the development and production of regenerative materials, in-vitro diagnostics and vascular-intervention devices with prototyping, regulatory advice, testing and clinical collaboration. Its value is a nearby network for product definition, engineering validation and regulated transfer rather than a simple list of manufacturers. Zhongguancun policies, sustained development of the biomedical base, a specialist device park and municipal-district review services shaped the cluster. Public records for 2025 also identify a prototyping platform, an innovation service station and hospital-industry matching that help early research enter manufacturable, testable and registrable pathways.
  • LINKED CLUSTER · Beijing Chaoyang energy-control systems — Chaoyang energy-control systems combine energy monitoring, building and industrial control, virtual power plants, storage dispatch, drive control and digital twins through hardware, software and engineering services. The sampled firms show local headquarters, R&D and solution capability, not the full list of 104 cluster companies. Long-standing energy-automation operations in Wangjing and Jiuxianqiao, Chaoyang’s headquarters economy and urban-renewal demand formed the base. New energy-control parks then linked digital energy, storage, equipment and integrated services. Official records use a “two circles, multiple nodes” geography at end-2025.
  • LINKED CLUSTER · Beijing Changping synthetic-biology manufacturing — Changping synthetic-biology manufacturing links biological-part and strain design, screening, fermentation optimisation, separation, analytical testing, pilots and product access across civilian applications including nutrition ingredients, bio-based monomers and microbial proteins. Research talent around Life Science Park and Future Science City, Changping industrial space and municipal-district platform investment shaped the cluster. Official records count 16 shared technical-service platforms by end-2025 and use existing incubator and production space to connect research with implementation.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Beijing Shunyi intelligent-connected vehicle support — Shunyi’s automotive support base is organised around vehicle programmes: sensors, actuators, structural parts and onboard electronics become deliverable only after interface release, prototype validation and vehicle approval. District material reports four vehicle leaders, seven R&D headquarters and more than 150 core suppliers at end-2025; those counts describe regional scale, not a supplier’s platform, part number or schedule. A component programme normally works backwards from vehicle interfaces and a validation plan: controlled engineering data precedes prototypes and bench tests, and issue closure precedes road validation and production readiness. Shunyi shortens travel among engineering, trial build and vehicle sites, while functional safety, software revision, material lot and change records still need programme-level sign-off.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Beijing Haidian industry-application software — Haidian industry software is not an abstract exercise in digitisation. It keeps bills, clinical records, work orders and equipment signals accurate when business rules change. The park shows a dense supplier base, while project outcomes still depend on semantics, permissions, interfaces, migration, rollback and operations working as one system. Energy, transport, finance, healthcare and government users have long brought complex operating problems to Haidian software teams. Product development and field implementation have therefore shaped each other. Reusable knowledge becomes master-data models, workflow engines, industry interfaces and operating tools, while customer-specific organisations, history and responsibilities still require explicit configuration and acceptance.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Beijing Haidian artificial intelligence — Haidian AI is included in the national advanced-manufacturing cluster system. The district’s 2024 ledger puts the core industry at RMB 282.2 billion and its relevant business population above 1,900; neither measure belongs to an individual model or company. Universities, institutes, technical communities and internet firms created research and talent density. Software engineering around Shangdi-Xierqi, northern R&D space and public computing then carried results into products and industry use. Data, interfaces and service agreements connect models, tools and applications.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Beijing Digital Entertainment — Beijing combines game development and publishing, long-form video, film production, and intellectual-property operations, allowing creation, technology, distribution, and monetization to be coordinated in one city. The cluster formed around creative talent, internet platforms, game studios, film-production networks, and international distribution. Shijingshan hosts game development while Chaoyang concentrates platforms, production, and commercial services.

Build a spatial frame for Beijing first

Beijing is not the Forbidden City plus a few universities. The historic central axis, Haidian university area, Chaoyang business districts, Yizhuang industry zone and outer mountains serve different purposes and require different travel radii.

  • HISTORIC CORE · The Central Axis provides the city’s historic structure — The Forbidden City, Jingshan, Drum and Bell Towers and Temple of Heaven are not isolated sights. They belong to a north–south order of ritual space and urban planning; reading the axis is more revealing than random sightseeing.
  • NORTHWEST · Haidian connects universities, research and technology firms — Universities, research institutes and Zhongguancun-linked parks overlap here, bringing study, research and technology business together. Haidian is still extensive; resolve every plan to a campus, park and metro station.
  • EAST · Chaoyang is closely tied to international business and urban consumption — The CBD, embassy areas, international events and many business services lie in the east. Confirm the exact building rather than treating Guomao as all of Chaoyang.
  • OUTER BEIJING · The Great Wall and mountains need their own day — Beijing extends far beyond the old city. A Great Wall or mountain day requires intercity-scale travel, site access and a return buffer; do not force it into a central-museum day.

Beijing practicalities: solve what can stop the day

Booked ID, airport, payment, connectivity and return transport matter more than one extra sight.

  • BOOKING · The booking document must match the entry document — Sites such as the Palace Museum use real-name booking. Bring the same original passport, retain the order and official support route, and do not send passport images to unknown resellers.
  • ARRIVAL · Confirm Capital or Daxing Airport first — The airports lie in different directions and have different city travel times. Plan from the ticketed airport, terminal and arrival time, with a late-night fallback independent of temporary data.
  • TRANSPORT · Metro handles the trunk journey; test the final kilometre — Straight-line distance hides transfers, security, station walks and site entrances. Record the correct exit and final walk for each major stop.
  • PAYMENT & DATA · Keep at least one fallback beyond the primary method — Prepare mobile payment, a physical bank card, some cash and offline Chinese addresses. New phone numbers, foreign cards or app risk controls may fail temporarily; do not put the entire trip in one app.
  • WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG · Save accommodation, venue, insurance and public-service contacts — Lost documents, medical needs, bookings and accommodation registration require different contacts. Save each responsible organisation and Beijing’s multilingual 12345 channel before an emergency.
