Chongqing business fieldwork: start with a specific project

Chongqing’s openly civilian automotive and motorcycle base links vehicles, powertrains, body, electronics, software, parts and manufacturing services. Hotpot food links spices, bases, meat and vegetable processing, cold chain and foodservice. Fieldwork excludes defence, aerospace and all restricted technology, covering only public products for consumers, logistics, mobility and dining. Vehicle demand pulls applications, while reliability platforms connect materials and process with automotive duty.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Chongqing Changshou natural-gas chemical materials — In Changshou natural gas is both fuel and carbon feed for syngas, methanol, acetylene or fermentation. Each route demands different purity, steam, oxygen, pressure and by-product handling. The cluster becomes clear only when the feed molecule is connected to the final material. SVW’s natural-gas acetylene and polyvinyl-alcohol chain formed an early base, while Kabele’s gas-to-methanol expanded platform feed. Shared corridors, utilities and environmental systems support continuous plants. Gas fermentation adds a biological route without becoming the same process as conventional synthesis.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Chongqing Zhongxian lithium-battery materials — Zhongxian’s lithium-battery materials cluster can be read through lithium iron phosphate cathode materials, battery materials and lithium salts, and lithium-ion cell manufacturing. Public records separately document the roles of the full Terui, Tianhai and Tianhui entities across materials and cells; group relationships remain visible and subsidiaries or production lines are not counted twice. MIIT’s 2023 list confirms the formal Zhongxian cluster. Project, registration and disclosure status from different years remains tied to the original dates and is not converted into live capacity or a complete roster.

Two-day business fieldwork sequence

This is not a sightseeing checklist. Day one confirms capability and project interfaces; day two confirms customers, validation, property, cost and responsibility. Unbooked plants, laboratories, warehouses and production sites are not casual attractions.

  • BEFORE ARRIVAL · Fix a specific project and responsible counterparts — For automotive, prepare an openly civilian function brief, interfaces, environment, testing, software and data boundaries. For motorcycles, prepare use, destination, load, roads, model and service. For food, prepare formula target, heat and aroma, packaging, storage, restaurant procedure and trial metrics. State in advance that the visit excludes defence, aerospace and restricted technology and will not enter unauthorised areas.
  • DAY 1 · Make the openly civilian vehicle project testable — Day one follows one automotive function or motorcycle model from requirement and sample to testing and volume responsibility.
  • DAY 2 · Trace one hotpot product from plant to restaurant — Day two turns flavour into an executable formula, lot, logistics and restaurant procedure rather than a sequence of tastings.
  • TAKEAWAYS · Every meeting should produce dated written evidence — Bring back the target legal entity and address, product or service specification, sample or pilot conditions, standard and permit revisions, quotation validity, delivery owner, payment terms, IP boundaries and stop conditions.   • FULL COST · Do not ask only about rent or incentives — Vehicle and motorcycle full cost includes development and integration, samples, tooling, testing, certification, pilot runs, critical-part commitments, vehicle or parts logistics, software maintenance, spares, training, warranty and recall. Food includes formula samples, ingredients and oils, packaging, production minimums, testing, ambient or cold chain, restaurant operation, waste, returns and short dates. Compare the same model or item, destination and responsibility boundary.
  • PERMITS · Separate company setup from sector permits — For vehicles and civilian motorcycles, verify model- and destination-specific product safety, road entry, emissions or energy, battery and charging, software updates, network and personal information, repair and recall. Food requires production licensing, formula additives, allergens, labels, testing, cold chain, traceability and restaurant use. Use public material and formal meetings only, without collecting restricted facilities, technical parameters or internal documents. New sites need separate planning, fire, environmental and energy review.
  • COUNTERPARTY · Identify demand, technical approval, procurement and payment owners — The demand owner, technical approver, contracting buyer and payer may differ. Obtain written confirmation of decision order, trial volume, acceptance, payment terms, service and dispute handling.
  • SOURCE DATE · Confirm the year, entity and geography behind public figures — Record city, district, zone, cluster and company figures separately. Refresh capacity, available property, staffing, pricing, permits and access before signing. Do not add incompatible statistical scopes.
  • EXIT · Calculate stop and exit cost before contracting — Verify deposits, leases, retrofit residual value, dedicated equipment and inventory, staffing, data or tooling ownership, warranty claims, early termination and relocation cost. Do not make an asset-heavy commitment without written exit terms.

Understand the industrial geography before choosing a site

Chongqing is mountainous, polycentric and spread across districts and counties. Liangjiang automotive nodes, civilian motorcycle production, food plants and central restaurant markets cannot be linked by straight lines. One main chain per day is practical; add a day to study both automotive and motorcycles in depth. Use booked addresses, roads and entrances for all visits; the functional diagram is not navigation.
