CITY GATEWAY

Chengdu

From teahouses and Sichuan food to technology and park-city life—a gentle first encounter with China.

Knowledge keys

Do not remember Chengdu as a checklist. Connect it through water, memory, public life, food and old-new urban space.

Business visits

Chengdu is not one industrial point. Electronics, software, equipment manufacturing and biomedicine occupy different clusters. Locate your place in the value chain before choosing parks, companies and authorities.

  • START WITH SECTORS · Ask a narrower question than “What industries does Chengdu have?” — Official records place Chengdu as a core area in national clusters including software and information services and Chengdu–Chongqing electronic-information manufacturing, while districts such as Wenjiang add specialised biopharmaceutical activity. A visit therefore needs a defined sector, district and real application setting.
  • THEN MAP SPACE · Do not confuse administrative, functional and industrial areas — Chengdu has 20 statutory county-level divisions alongside functional management areas such as Chengdu High-tech Zone, the Chengdu-administered part of Sichuan Tianfu New Area and Chengdu Eastern New Area. Resolve every business address to a road, park and managing body—not merely “Tianfu New Area” or “High-tech Zone”.
  • BEFORE THE VISIT · Prepare a one-page visit brief — Put the product or service, value-chain stage, target counterpart, questions to verify, public and confidential information, and explicit out-of-scope topics on one page.
  • FIELD RECORD · Separate facts, promises and items to verify — For every meeting, record source, date, responsible person, original document and next verification step. Verbal claims remain “stated by the counterpart”, not confirmed conclusions.
  • SUPPLIER DUE DILIGENCE · Assess smaller firms through evidence of delivery — Ask each candidate for its contracting entity, specifications, capacity, lead time, quality system, key equipment or service capability and referenceable delivery cases. Stop the transaction if the name, account, quotation and contracting entity do not match.
  • DECISION BOUNDARIES · Confirm access, permits, tax, employment and contracts separately — Obtain market-access, investment-permit and employment requirements from the responsible authorities. Ask appropriately qualified tax, legal and intellectual-property advisers for written advice on the specific transaction. Do not decide to invest while any responsible party, required material, output or scope remains unclear.
  • LINKED CLUSTER · Chengdu Chongzhou panel furniture — Chongzhou centres on panel and customised furniture, linking engineered panels and surfaces, hardware, design-to-production data, smart manufacturing, quality testing, installation and retail networks. Long-term expansion by local leaders, Chengdu demand and design resources, supporting suppliers and national furniture-testing services drove clustering and an extension into whole-home solutions and digital manufacturing.
  • LINKED CLUSTER · Chengdu Chenghua intelligent robots — Chenghua links controllers, drives, sensing, complete machines, system integration, testing, certification and application services around industrial, collaborative and rehabilitation robots and automation cells. Longtan robot-industry facilities, local machine producers, Chengdu universities and engineering talent, application projects and continuing supply-chain collaboration shaped the full-chain cluster.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Chengdu Qingbaijiang ultra-high-strength alloys — Ultra-high strength is not one tensile number. Bearing steel is sensitive to inclusions and contact fatigue, additive powder to size, shape and oxygen, and heavy parts to toughness, residual stress and machined surface. Qingbaijiang brings research, conversion and component service into one regional view. Chengdu’s advanced-metal research platform supplies alloy design and convertible results, Qingbaijiang parks host materials and precision-part industrialisation, and companies such as Tianma take steel performance into large bearings and slewing rings. Logistics helps flows, but material release remains a joint result of melt, heat treatment and inspection.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Chengdu electronic information — Integrated circuits, new displays, smart devices and software services form a major electronics base in western China. Universities, high-tech zones, manufacturing projects and the western China market support the cluster, reinforced by metropolitan coordination.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Chengdu Xindu large aircraft components — Xindu’s large-aircraft-components cluster can be read through aircraft-skin mirror milling, precision machining of titanium structural parts, airframe-structure manufacturing and aviation-parts supply. Provincial records, statutory disclosures and Chengdu enterprise lists separately anchor three full legal entities; groups, parks and production lines are not counted as companies. MIIT’s 2023 list confirms the formal Xindu large-aircraft-components cluster. A Sichuan People’s Congress report on Xindu Aviation Industrial Park adds large-component machining context. Other provincial and municipal lists record legal entities and product stages only at their stated dates, not live orders, capacity or a complete roster.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Chengdu Wenjiang biotechnology medicines — Wenjiang’s biotechnology-medicines cluster is read through biopharmaceutical R&D, production permitting and statutory innovative-drug disclosure. The full Jingze, Tongrui and Kelun-Biotech entities separately cover R&D and production, project permitting and listed-company disclosure; drug names, R&D platforms and group brands are not counted as firms. MIIT’s 2023 list confirms the formal Wenjiang biotechnology-medicines cluster, while Sichuan government and Chengdu official media add Chengdu Medical City and value-chain context. Company evidence retains each approval, licence, list or disclosure date; R&D progress is not converted into approved efficacy or commercial sales.

Remember Chengdu first

Chengdu is more than its old centre and pandas. It spans plain, mountains, new districts and industrial zones. Build a spatial frame before choosing where to go or stay.

  • CITY ROLE · Sichuan’s capital and a national central city — Chengdu is the provincial capital and a sub-provincial city. Official documents also position it as a national central city and a core of the Chengdu–Chongqing economic circle. These are administrative and development roles, not a generic “large western city” label.
  • BOUNDARIES · Twenty county-level divisions are not twenty similar urban districts — Chengdu legally includes 12 urban districts, three counties and five county-level cities. Mountains, plain, old centre, new towns and outer areas all sit within one municipality, so two places “in Chengdu” may still be far apart.
  • GEOGRAPHY · The plain is central, but Chengdu is not entirely flat — Chengdu lies on the western edge of the Sichuan Basin and generally slopes from northwest to southeast. The west reaches mountain terrain, while central and eastern areas connect more closely with the Chengdu Plain. Travel, living and business decisions begin with this geography.
  • ONE THREAD · Understand Chengdu together with Dujiangyan — Dujiangyan coordinates water division, sediment control and intake through components including Yuzui, Feishayan and Baopingkou, supported by continued maintenance. It connects the Min River, Chengdu Plain, agriculture and urban growth into one system.

Living in Chengdu: make the first week work

Living in Chengdu is not an extended holiday. First connect the address, commute, payment, connectivity, documents and healthcare fallbacks into a daily system that can keep working.

  • WHERE TO LIVE · Build your living radius around work or study — Map every place you must reach weekly, then compare real travel time, transfers, final kilometre, late return and basic services. Chengdu is extensive; cheaper housing may not justify a cross-city commute.
  • ARRIVAL DAY · Confirm the airport before planning the final leg — Chengdu uses both Tianfu and Shuangliu airports. International passenger operations shifted mainly to Tianfu, but never guess from “international or domestic”; use the airport and terminal printed on the ticket.
  • GETTING AROUND · Use mobile payment, but keep a fallback — Foreign bank cards can be linked to supported mobile-payment services, and Chengdu is expanding foreign-card access on public transport. Acceptance still varies by merchant, device, card and risk controls, so keep a physical card, some cash and offline addresses.
  • CLIMATE & HOME · Humidity and damp-cool weather shape daily life — Chengdu’s long-term climate background includes higher humidity, substantial cloud and concentrated summer rain. When viewing housing, check ventilation, daylight, dehumidification, drying space and winter heating rather than relying on “mild climate”.
  • BEFORE A PROBLEM · Keep document and health information offline — Keep separate copies of passport, visa or residence document, insurance, university or employer contact, address and emergency numbers. Do not store every original and copy together; contact the responsible authority promptly for document, residence or emergency issues.
  • FIRST WEEK · Complete six small tasks before “knowing Chengdu” — Confirm accommodation registration, test one commute, set primary and backup payment, establish connectivity, save common addresses in Chinese, and locate nearby groceries and healthcare. The city becomes usable only after these basics work.

Where to stay

Choose an area around each day’s main activity before comparing hotels. Straight-line distance is a poor guide.

  • FIRST VISIT · Central city and metro interchange — Best for museums, the older city, parks and dining, with an easier return at night.
  • BUSINESS · Stay around the relevant industry district — High-tech, Tianfu and manufacturing districts cover a wide area. Confirm meeting addresses before booking.
  • DUJIANGYAN OR MOUNTAINS · Turn an early departure into a lodging decision — If an early site entry matters, consider moving the previous night while checking return transport at the same time.
  • INTERNATIONAL GUESTS · Confirm guest registration before booking — Confirm acceptance of your travel document, check-in time, deposit, payment and accommodation registration directly with the property rather than relying on a platform label.

Practical details

Allow at least three days on a first visit and budget city time separately from an outer trip such as Dujiangyan.

  • TRANSPORT · Combine rail transit and walking in the city — Check service changes first, then judge the route by its final walk rather than straight-line distance.
  • ARRIVAL · Break the final leg from airport or rail station into steps — Record the arrival terminal, interchange, exit, final walk and property contact separately. For late arrivals, keep one fallback that does not depend on temporary mobile data.
  • TIME · Give each day one main learning goal — Museums, parks and neighbourhoods can share a day. Outer-city anchors such as Dujiangyan need their own buffer.
  • PAYMENT AND DATA · Prepare both a primary and fallback method — Set up bank card, mobile payment and connectivity before departure, while keeping some cash and offline copies of the accommodation address and important numbers. Do not put the entire trip on one app.
  • BUDGET METHOD · Separate lodging, transport, tickets, food and contingencies — The platform avoids a fixed total because holidays, room type and intercity travel change costs sharply. Recalculate using official ticketing and live accommodation quotes.

Food and dining context

Chengdu food is not a contest for heat. Compound flavours, fermented seasonings, technique and the rhythm of a shared meal matter more.

  • START SMALL · Begin with breakfast and snacks — Use small dishes to learn sweet, salty, numbing, hot, sour and aromatic combinations. The first meal need not be the strongest.
  • A SHARED TABLE · Balance temperature, ingredients and intensity — Avoid ordering several similar intense dishes. Vegetables, soup and non-spicy dishes reveal a fuller Sichuan meal.
  • READ FLAVOUR · Heat is an entry point; compound flavour is the real clue — Notice how peppercorn, chilli, fermented bean paste, vinegar, sugar and aromatics combine. Similar heat levels can produce very different fragrance, structure and finish.
  • BEYOND MEALS · A teahouse is not merely a waiting room for meals — In a teahouse, watch how time is used through conversation, games, reading or simply sitting. This rhythm is an important part of Chengdu life beyond food.
  • SAY IT EARLY · Confirm allergies, vegetarian and halal needs venue by venue — Do not rely on dish names alone. Ingredients, stock, shared cookware and seasonings may affect whether a need is truly met.
