Chengdu Qingbaijiang ultra-high-strength alloys
Ultra-high strength is not one tensile number. Bearing steel is sensitive to inclusions and contact fatigue, additive powder to size, shape and oxygen, and heavy parts to toughness, residual stress and machined surface. Qingbaijiang brings research, conversion and component service into one regional view.
Formation and regional foundations
Chengdu’s advanced-metal research platform supplies alloy design and convertible results, Qingbaijiang parks host materials and precision-part industrialisation, and companies such as Tianma take steel performance into large bearings and slewing rings. Logistics helps flows, but material release remains a joint result of melt, heat treatment and inspection.
An alloy strong in a coupon may not remain reliable in a large bearing, additive part or cyclic load. Inclusions, grain, heat treatment, residual stress and surface integrity can amplify or erase chemistry. Qingbaijiang connects these variables through materials and parts.
Core geography: A materials-application network across Qingbaijiang research institutes, European Industrial City and precision-machinery areas, joining alloy design, melting or powder production, heat treatment, forging, bearing work and NDT
Five stations from alloy design to heavy-duty component
How research, material lots and bearing service connect in Qingbaijiang
The institute proposes chemistry and process windows, materials plants melt or atomise, and part makers handle heat treatment, machining and assembly. Returned failures must separate internal material, heat-treated structure and surface stress rather than rely on one strength value.
- Chemistry and failure design — Load and environment become chemistry and structure targets.
- Melting or powder production — Cleanliness, gases and size establish the material lot.
- Forging and heat treatment — Deformation and temperature control grains and phases.
- Precision machining and NDT — Dimensions, surface and internal flaws enter part release.
- Bearing and heavy-duty service — Contact fatigue, shock and lubrication expose long-term behaviour.
01 · Service failure defines material duty
Contact fatigue, shock and heat require different strength-toughness balances.
An ultrahigh-strength alloy grade acquires engineering meaning only in the duty of a component. Aircraft load-bearing parts, heavy-duty bearings and additively manufactured components face multiaxial load, contact fatigue or rapid-solidification structures, requiring toughness, crack growth, environmental damage and orientation to be considered alongside strength. Qingbaijiang material and manufacturing teams must define temperature, load path and life target before choosing composition, forging or powder routes.
When a part pits early, fractures brittlely or loses dimensional stability, the final fracture location may not be the initial weakness, and later rubbing may obscure surface evidence. Investigation reconstructs load spectrum, temperature, lubrication, assembly and stress concentration, then joins the operating log with fracture morphology and hardness gradient. If contact loading changed first while material condition remained normal, attention returns to the system; if local structure or toughness departed, the manufacturing route becomes the focus.
Component duty is first translated into a combination of strength, fracture-toughness, fatigue and environmental tests that preserve actual load direction and thermal cycling. Specimens come from representative locations and orientations, with manufacturing history, surface condition and notch geometry retained beside the result so sampling effects are not confused with material variation. The grade enters design-allowable discussion after the property combination covers the least favourable boundary.
- Material selection begins with load and environment, not maximum strength.
02 · Chemistry must serve microstructure
Alloying, impurities and heat treatment determine phases and grains.
Research uses thermodynamics and coupons to set alloying, carbon and impurity limits, while the chemistry window must then match structures achievable in melting, solidification and heat treatment, so chemistry creates value through phases and grains. Equal nominal chemistry may form different properties through segregation and cooling, meaning small laboratory-melt uniformity cannot represent an industrial furnace. More alloying may improve hardenability or hot strength yet introduce segregation, brittle phases and machining difficulty, requiring room for downstream process variation.
When small coupons meet strength while the centre of a scaled blank lacks toughness, repeating one average chemistry cannot explain the section difference, especially the change from core to surface. Engineers compare segregation, grains, phases and cooling history along ingot height and section radius while holding specimen orientation constant. Once chemical maps and mechanical results meet at the same coordinates, the problem can be assigned to element control, solidification or heat-treatment response.
Composition windows are examined on industrial heats rather than small melts, with sampling across the beginning and end of a heat, different ingot heights and large sections. Each specimen remains linked to melting, casting and heat-treatment records, allowing chemical segregation, phase constitution and mechanical properties to be compared at one coordinate. The composition design is robust for volume manufacture only when ordinary process variation still remains inside microstructure and property boundaries.
- A laboratory chemistry transfers only if it survives industrial variation.
03 · Melt cleanliness sets fatigue origins
Inclusions, gases and segregation can start fatigue cracks.
Melting, refining and casting jointly control inclusions and gases in the alloy, and solidification rate and direction determine segregation and large-section uniformity, allowing a fatigue crack to begin at an inclusion invisible to the eye. A tensile pass does not prove safe inclusion behaviour under contact cycling, because very high strength amplifies small inclusions and segregation. Melting, refining and casting in Qingbaijiang jointly set cleanliness, and later heat treatment cannot remove a hard particle already present.
When spalling begins at an internal inclusion below a bearing raceway, particle type, size and depth at the fracture origin matter more than a total inclusion count. Heat cleanliness and casting position are first matched with ultrasonic coordinates, then metallography or fracture examination confirms the particle, surrounding structure and whether it lies near maximum contact stress. A flaw at one isolated location may be incidental, whereas recurrence along a material direction points to a systematic refining or pouring problem.
Cleanliness control places sampling points in refining and pouring while keeping continuous identity from melt and ingot through semifinished stock to the final part. Ultrasonic results, metallography and fatigue origins are compared along defect coordinates, considering not only inclusion count but also size, form and clustering. Once defect distribution explains life scatter, the process team can decide whether filtration, refining or pouring rhythm needs to change.
- Ultra-high-strength material is more sensitive to small defects.
04 · Metal powder has a separate quality language
Size, sphericity, oxygen and flow affect additive manufacture.
Atomisation turns molten alloy into particles with a size distribution and surface state, while sieving, reuse and storage continue to change satellites, oxygen and flow, so metal powder has its own build behaviour before spreading. An accepted ingot does not guarantee stable powder spreading and melting, meaning mother-alloy chemistry cannot replace size and surface state. Satellites, hollow particles, oxygen and recycled-powder ratio change flow, melt-pool stability and porosity, requiring an identity for every powder lot.
When printed layers show pores, spatter or lot-to-lot density variation, increasing laser energy directly may hide powder contamination and widen thermal effects. The team first checks whether the anomaly follows powder lot, recoating direction, platform position or reuse count, then compares particle size, oxygen, flow, shielding-gas circulation and machine logs. If fresh powder removes the pattern, feed condition is suspect; if defects remain at machine coordinates, optics, recoating or gas flow deserves attention.
Additive powder is accepted by particle size, oxygen, flow and reuse count, with satellite and hollow-particle fractions assessed before lots are blended. Representative components are built in different orientations and platform positions, while powder lot, machine parameters, heat treatment and fatigue specimen remain linked. Reuse rules avoid trading quality risk for material savings only when component density, surface defects and orientation-dependent life are all stable.
- A powder lot cannot be represented by parent-alloy chemistry alone.
05 · Forging aligns structure with load
Reduction, temperature and flow lines affect large-section integrity.
Forging and rolling close voids through plastic deformation and direct the cast structure into grain flow related to component shape. Heating uniformity, total reduction and finish temperature determine consistency from surface to core in a large section, so correct dimensions may still conceal coarse grains or internal looseness that remains after machining. Large rings and bearing blanks also require specimen orientation to follow final load before forming history can be judged to improve toughness and fatigue.
When a large ring develops directional differences in machining or fatigue, forging flow and specimen orientation are reviewed along the principal load. Macroetch shows grain-flow direction, ultrasound locates internal reflectors, and oriented mechanical specimens quantify property differences, all placed on finished-part coordinates and principal-stress locations. A crack in severed flow directs attention to machining allowance and forming path, whereas an origin in original looseness returns the investigation to the blank and reduction.
For a large forging, heating temperature, soak, reduction and deformation direction correspond to the intended grain flow on the process card, with mandatory reductions at critical sections. Macro examination and ultrasonic inspection retain component coordinates, while mechanical specimens are oriented by principal load and through-thickness position. The forging route genuinely serves component load when grain flow bypasses stress concentrations and sectional properties meet duty.
- Forming history remains inside the finished component.
06 · Heat treatment balances strength and toughness
Heating, quench and temper control transformation and residual stress.
Austenitising, cooling and tempering turn chemistry into hardness, toughness and dimensional stability, and furnace uniformity, loading arrangement and section thickness set transformation rate, bringing phase change, hardness and dimensional movement into the component together. Accepted surface hardness may hide a weak core or excessive stress, because surface and core of a large section do not cool at the same rate. Releasing a Qingbaijiang heavy part by surface hardness alone may miss weak core toughness, residual stress or quench distortion.
If a ring distorts, cracks or shows an abnormal hardness gradient after quenching, one hardness point cannot describe the thermal history of the section. Investigation checks furnace temperature, transfer time, quench-medium flow, hardenability and the part’s actual route from furnace door to quench tank by loading position, then compares structure, hardness and dimensional movement along one radius. Weak core hardness points to cooling or hardenability, whereas movement concentrated after restraint is removed is more consistent with residual-stress release.
The heat-treatment plan specifies loading arrangement, heating, soak, transfer and quench agitation rather than recording only a furnace setpoint. Large-section parts carry specimens and hardness positions from surface to core, while dimensional change is linked to heat, fixture and cooling medium. Strength, toughness and distortion must pass together on the same component so repeat heat treatment does not become the default remedy.
- Temperature gradients create different structures across large parts.
07 · Finished surfaces carry contact life
Geometry, roughness and residual stress affect crack initiation.
Turning, grinding and superfinishing turn heat-treated parts into raceways, teeth or fits, while geometry, grinding burn, roughness and surface stress jointly determine contact, so a component carries cyclic load through its finished surface. A strong core cannot compensate for early cracks from a damaged surface, meaning base-material strength reaches service only through geometry and machining state. Raceway waviness, grinding burn and tensile residual stress can start pitting early, and a material certificate alone cannot describe bearing life.
When an installed part develops noise, pitting or local heat, contact patterns and lubrication marks need comparison with finishing records. Profile, roughness, burn inspection and surface hardness describe geometry, texture, grinding heat and structure respectively, then are checked against assembly misload, lubricant film and operating temperature. A surface-origin crack directs attention first to machining or installation, while an internal-inclusion origin returns the issue to material cleanliness.
Before finish machining, functional datum, contact surfaces and highly stressed radii enter the inspection plan, while cutting and grinding parameters control burn and residual stress. Geometry, roughness, near-surface structure and residual stress are examined together in actual load-bearing regions and linked to tool lot and coolant condition. Surface quality becomes more than drawing values when assembly contact and durability results agree with those measurements.
- Material properties enter service through the actual surface.
08 · NDT closes the life-feedback loop
Ultrasound, magnetic particles and geometry cover different defect levels.
NDT seeks internal, near-surface and geometric anomalies without destroying the part, while method sensitivity, scan coverage and acceptance class must match failure risk, so no inspection method covers every flaw. An accepted report without location coordinates cannot support later failure work, requiring findings to return to a heat and component coordinate before action. Ultrasonic work seeks internal reflectors, magnetic particles reveal near-surface cracks, and dimensional-surface checks protect assembly boundaries, so their findings cannot be collapsed into one conclusion.
If a returned part cracks while original inspection kept only a general conclusion, first determine whether earlier inspection covered the relevant direction and depth. Crack location must overlay original scan, machining zone and load direction, while reconnecting the flaw with load, heat treatment and machining history. Correlating inspection signal, destructive result and service time distinguishes weak sensitivity, sampling omission and a new failure mechanism, avoiding a blanket expansion of NDT that still misses the vulnerable zone.
The nondestructive plan divides surfaces, hole edges, thick sections and joint transitions by failure risk, assigning method, sensitivity and coverage direction to each region. Boundary indications are rechecked with a second method or probe angle, and returned parts are compared at their original coordinates with manufacturing history. Once field damage and detection capability form a closed loop, the team can adjust sensitivity or an upstream operation without simply widening the rejection zone.
- Inspection records must return to heat and exact location.

Define material duty from load, temperature and failure mode, then follow chemistry, melting or powder, forming, heat treatment, machining and NDT. Research must survive equipment scale and lot stability before production, and bearing performance does not imply that every feed alloy was melted locally.
