Shigatse: monastery visits, city life and restrained observation

Tashilhunpo is both a 5A attraction and a functioning religious institution. Visitor routes, worship space, monastic life and displays must remain distinct, while city food and festivals are not monastery programmes.

  • Recognise the setting in which culture actually occurs — Move from the monastery’s foothill layout into courtyards and halls, noting architectural layers, circumambulation direction and no-photography signs; never treat people or ritual as scenery.
  • Participate only where the setting clearly allows it — Follow same-day opening and on-site guidance, giving worshippers priority; when unsure of an action’s meaning, observe quietly rather than imitate. Explore city food outside the monastery.
  • Separate residents’ lives, ritual and performance — Check dress, photography and circulation requirements before entering halls; do not touch offerings, murals or ritual objects, and obtain prior permission for close portraits, interviews or recording rites.
