Shigatse Highland Food Processing

Shigatse highland foods centre on barley, linking cultivation and purchasing with tsampa, flour, barley liquor, and trade-fair sales. Citywide planting and output provide the base, while firms in Gyantse and elsewhere show specific products and processes.

Formation and regional foundations

High-altitude cultivation created a durable raw-material tradition, while seed development and deeper processing broadened product forms. Typical planting area, annual crop output, processing value, and leading-firm counts measure land, harvest, industrial value, and operators separately.

In Shigatse, barley is both a widely planted grain and the basis for tsampa, flour, liquor, and packaged foods. The citywide crop figures need to be separated from purchasing, production, and fair activity at individual firms.

01 · Citywide barley, local foods

The crop base and food processing sit at different levels.

Shigatse highland-food processing is organised around citywide barley production and barley-food examples. Two official-media reports reproduced by autonomous-region government departments provide city metrics; other material records a Gyantse firm, participation in an agricultural fair, barley-liquor and food companies, and a company proposed to pass a monitoring review. Each item retains its original locality and time boundary.

More than 900,000 mu is an open-ended description of typical annual barley area, while approximately 425,000 tonnes is primary-crop output for 2024. CNY 1.66 billion refers to the broader output of agricultural and livestock-product processing, and 37 is the total number of city-level-or-above agricultural leading enterprises across several sectors.

Before using a number, state city scope, data year or typical annual status, approximation, unit, and measured population. Citywide measures are not allocated to Gyantse County, one company, or a fair.

  • More than 900,000 mu describes typical planting and cannot be divided evenly among counties.

02 · Four measures that cannot be merged

Area, output, value, and firms use distinct units.

The four core metrics are more than 900,000 mu of typical annual barley planting, approximately 425,000 tonnes of 2024 barley output, RMB 1.66 billion in 2024 agricultural-and-livestock-processing output value, and 37 municipal-or-higher agricultural-industrialisation leading enterprises in 2024. Two reports separately confirm the typical annual area and the three 2024 observations.

Area cannot become processing area or raw-material throughput, and primary-crop output is not processed-food output. Processing output value covers agricultural and livestock products beyond barley, while the 37 leading enterprises also include industrialised operators outside barley-food processing.

Later checks separately seek barley sown area, yield and output, like-for-like agricultural-and-livestock-processing value, and an effective leading-enterprise roster. A barley-food subset requires an explicit product classification and company roster and cannot be estimated from broad figures.

  • Approximately 425,000 tonnes refers to barley output, not the weight of all processed foods.

03 · From field output to processing

The marketed share determines how much barley enters trade.

An October 2024 brand report records more than 900,000 mu of typical annual barley planting in Shigatse and describes seed multiplication, higher-value deeper-processing research, and brand promotion. A separate September 2025 report records approximately 425,000 tonnes of Shigatse barley output in 2024.

The brand report's rounded 400,000-tonne statement uses different precision from the later approximately 425,000-tonne figure and is excluded. An approximate 50 percent regional share depends on another denominator and is also excluded.

Understanding conversion from planting to processing requires annual sown and harvested area, yield, total crop, marketed-grain share, procurement batches, and processing-input records. The current figures describe primary-production background and do not show that all barley enters food processing.

  • Harvest, storage, purchasing, and factory input include losses and competing uses.

04 · A barley-food firm in Gyantse

Gecang brings purchasing, R&D, and processing into one local story.

An official-media report reproduced by the autonomous-region government identifies Tibet Gecang Barley Food Technology Development Co., Ltd., records its 2014 establishment in Gyantse County, Shigatse, and describes barley purchasing, R&D, processing, and sales at the report date. A citywide brand report separately proposes higher-value deeper-processing research.

The approximately 3.15 million kilograms of annual barley purchases is a rounded one-company procurement context and is excluded from the four city metrics. It cannot become current processing volume, capacity, output, inventory, sales, or market share.

A Gyantse barley-food assessment separately obtains entity registration, production site, procurement batches, processing permission, product specifications, testing, annual output, and sales records. Only contemporaneous direct documentation can connect procurement with input and finished output.

  • One company’s annual purchasing does not equal throughput for Gyantse or Shigatse.

05 · Tsampa, flour, and barley liquor

Different foods follow different processes and uses.

Official Shigatse media reproduced by the autonomous-region agriculture department identifies Tibet Wangda Barley Food Co., Ltd. as a participant in the 21st China International Agricultural Products Fair and records displayed tsampa, barley flour, and traditional water milling. Another report identifies Shigatse Zhengtang Integrated Food Co., Ltd. in contemporary barley-liquor, tsampa, flour, and noodle contexts.

The fair's eight enterprises, more than 50 local products, and separate reference to more than 40 agricultural products are fair-organisation counts, not Shigatse's enterprise total, stable catalogue, or cluster scale. Zhengtang's site, building, employee, and subgroup figures belong to one company at the report date and stay outside city metrics.

A fair-product example retains fair name, date, display verb, and product type and does not extend into current continuous production or supply. Checking Wangda's current status requires a final monitoring result, production permission, and recent product batches.

  • The variety count at a fair reflects that event, not a permanent production catalogue.

06 · Three firms, three perspectives

Gecang, Wangda, and Zhengtang each reveal a different activity.

Tibet Gecang Barley Food Technology Development Co., Ltd. is identified in an official-media report on the autonomous-region government platform that supplies its legal name, a 2014 Gyantse establishment statement, and report-date barley purchasing, R&D, processing, and sales context. Its rounded procurement figure is not a city metric.

Wangda’s fair coverage records displayed products and traditional milling, while a 2026 notice gives its proposed status for 2025 monitoring. The two events describe different stages and do not establish enduring qualification or current capacity.

Zhengtang is described through barley liquor, tsampa, flour, noodles, and catering. Its premises and workforce figures remain separate from the four citywide measures.

  • Establishment dates, fair participation, and product coverage show experience but do not create a shared supply chain.

07 · Monitoring notices and operating status

A proposed approval is not a completed procedure.

The available information excludes the rounded 400,000-tonne output, approximate 50 percent regional share, signing amounts, sales agreements, irrigation and high-standard-farmland figures, seed-base and coverage figures, company procurement, fair counts, company premises, and employee counts. They may provide contemporary background but do not enter the four city metrics.

The agriculture department public notice lists Wangda in the proposed list of regional agricultural-industrialisation leading enterprises passing 2025 monitoring. Public notice and proposed to pass cannot become final recognition, permanent status, or a guarantee of continuous current operation.

A new metric first needs classification as city, county, fair, or company level and then a duplication check against area, output, value, or enterprise cohort. The differently precise 400,000-tonne and approximately 425,000-tonne statements do not become parallel metrics.

  • Current notices, licences, and actual product information should align when assessing a firm.

08 · Discovering the region through barley foods

Product type is more useful than a macro total when planning an experience.

Six sources from the autonomous-region government, agriculture department, or hosted official media form a layered Shigatse picture. Two reports supply citywide barley area, output, broad agricultural-and-livestock-processing value, and a broad leading-enterprise cohort.

Cross-region comparison distinguishes typical annual area from annual area, primary-crop output from processed-food output, broad agricultural-and-livestock-processing value from a barley-food subset, and a leading-enterprise cohort from food processors. A Gyantse example does not represent county distribution across the city, while fair products are not a current stable catalogue or market transaction.

A visit, procurement or partnership enquiry can proceed separately through primary barley, Gyantse food processing, and diversified barley food or liquor, requesting recent registration, production permissions, lots, testing, output, contracts and delivery material from the named operator. A relationship should be treated as an established business link only when a formal record identifies both parties, the time and the specific product, service or transaction.

  • Before visiting or buying, check location, public access, and seasonal availability for a more grounded view.

Sources and reading notes

Typical planting area is not combined with 2024 output to calculate an exact yield. Fair counts, company purchasing, and proposed monitoring status remain tied to their specific settings.

  • Typical annual barley planting area in Shigatse as described by the report: 900000+ mu of typical annual barley planting area (typical annual Shigatse barley planting-area description in the report contemporary 25 October 2024).
  • Shigatse barley output in 2024: 425000 approximate tonnes of barley output (Shigatse citywide 2024 barley output reported on 22 September 2025).
