Tongcheng mica electronic materials
Tongcheng carries mica from mineral flakes into paper, laminates and shaped insulation. Heat resistance, dielectric strength and flexibility only become meaningful in a defined motor, cable or battery-pack duty; the mineral name alone does not describe finished performance.
Formation and regional foundations
County mineral-processing experience grew alongside electrical-insulation demand, adding paper grading, resin impregnation, lamination and die cutting. Thermal-runaway protection in new-energy vehicles brings thinner parts and tighter cleanliness, forcing established high-temperature insulation to revisit resin, volatiles and lot consistency.
Mica is naturally heat resistant and electrically insulating, yet it cannot be installed directly in a motor or battery pack. Tongcheng creates value through flake grading, wet paper formation, resin impregnation, lamination and shaped conversion, each capable of shifting dielectric, flexibility and mechanical balance.

Six material transformations from flake to thermal barrier
Where mica changes its electrical, thermal and assembly behaviour
Nodes represent changes in material state rather than fixed supply relationships. One company may cover several stages, while actual responsibility follows the product and order.
- Flake classification — Size, impurities and mineral type are separated first.
- Wet paper formation — Slurry dispersion and drainage form the continuous web.
- Binder impregnation — Resin content and volatiles alter later consolidation.
- Lamination and cure — Temperature, pressure and time establish the laminate.
- Shape conversion — Holes, bends and burrs enter assembly judgement.
- Motor and battery duty — Electric field, thermal cycling and compression qualify the material.
01 · Flake condition decides whether paper can become uniform
Impurities, flake size and mineral type jointly influence pulping.
Mica cleaves into thin platelets along its layered structure, providing heat-resistant insulation while creating a dispersion challenge in wet pulping. Oversized flakes can form local stacks in the web, whereas excessive grinding weakens platelet overlap; iron-bearing impurities may also raise dielectric loss. Tongcheng’s electronic-material route starts with feed classification, routing flakes by paper grade, binder and final part before the paper machine.
A purchase order saying only natural or synthetic mica can still mix different mines, cleaning routes and milling conditions in one silo. When thickness bands appear at the paper machine, operators may adjust flow or pressing and amplify a feed-distribution problem across the roll. Pursuing very fine particles also slows drainage and increases drying load. Feed specifications therefore join size distribution, impurities and target paper type.
Before a new mine source enters production, a small slurry trial can compare settling, drainage, web uniformity and dry strength, with paper reserved for later impregnation. Receipt samples remain separate by origin and processing lot, while unusual colour or magnetic particles are isolated from the main chest. Use expands only after machine settings and defects remain stable across several short rolls.
- Flake specifications must reach the paper target, not stop at the mineral name
02 · The paper machine organises platelets into continuous insulation
Dispersion, drainage and drying create variation within a roll.
Mica paper is not compacted mineral powder; rather, numerous platelets disperse in water, deposit and overlap into a web. Slurry consistency, forming flow, vacuum drainage and drying tension alter basis weight, porosity and directional strength. A smooth-looking roll may still contain bands with different resin uptake that emerge only during lamination or bending, making roll uniformity more important than one thickness point.
Sampling only the roll head for basis weight and strength can miss start-up transition, forming-wire contamination or mid-roll drying shifts. If a converter raises resin uniformly to reach one target uptake, faster-absorbing bands may become resin rich, losing flexibility and raising volatiles. Paper maker and converter need roll-position information so an impregnation anomaly can return to paper time instead of being blamed solely on formulation.
Build a cross-web basis-weight and thickness profile for every roll, retaining matched strips at head, middle and tail while recording slurry lot, speed, vacuum and drying temperature. Splices and abnormal sections receive visible identification rather than disappearing inside nominal length. Lamination trials then compare uptake curves and post-press voids, connecting paper-machine controls with finished insulation behaviour. When a low-basis-weight lane becomes resin rich after impregnation, its cross-web coordinate returns to forming-flow and vacuum checks rather than disappearing inside an average resin figure for the roll.
- Roll position must travel with paper into impregnation and lamination
03 · Binder chemistry decides how mica layers carry load together
Uptake, solvent and cure change heat resistance and flexibility.
Dry mica paper holds shape through platelet overlap but lacks sufficient interlayer strength, so silicone or another heat-resistant binder usually impregnates the web. Resin must enter pores and coat platelets without turning flexible tape into a brittle sheet. Solvent and low-molecular residues can also release during motor heating or a battery thermal event, joining bonding, dielectric behaviour, volatiles and line speed in one formulation choice.
Managing every paper grade through one resin-content target ignores porosity, platelet size and use. Surface coverage can look complete while dry pockets remain inside; longer impregnation to remove them changes solvent load and line rhythm. Under-cure causes blocking, while excessive cure reduces later formability. Quality discussion must include resin amount, distribution, volatiles and cure state instead of one average. With inadequate oven exhaust, a tack-free surface can still trap solvent between platelets, and temperature or odour after winding may reveal the difference earlier than a line-side touch check.
During a formula change, run a short roll and examine weight gain, cross-section penetration and post-oven residue before making specimens under target bending or lamination conditions. Record each oven zone and exhaust with line speed, then test tack and flexibility after cooling. A change of solvent, resin lot or base paper receives separate first-roll identity and longer observation so delayed cure does not reach assembly unnoticed.
- Resin content belongs with penetration, volatiles and cure state
04 · Laminates acquire structure under heat and pressure
The press cycle controls voids, thickness and interlayer bonding.
When layers of mica paper or tape enter a hot press, resin softens, flows and cures while platelets become a machinable board. Heating rate, pressure timing and dwell govern resin squeeze-out, gas escape and internal stress. As thickness increases, centre and surface follow different temperature histories, so a thin-board cycle cannot simply be extended to a thick grade.
Average finished thickness can hide resin-starved edges, local bubbles and interlayer slip. Higher pressure may reduce voids while driving binder from edges and causing springback. The board continues cooling after the press; early stacking or machining can release residual stress as warp. Stability therefore comes from full-board thickness variation, cross-sectional voids and flatness after cooling.
Establish a separate press cycle for each thickness, using embedded temperature points to record closure, pressure, venting and cooling. Sample centre, edge and corner from the first board for density, void, flexural and dielectric comparison, while remaining boards rest to thermal equilibrium before machining. After press maintenance or pad replacement, repeat thickness mapping to verify contact pressure has not shifted. If a thermocouple does not reach the central layer of a representative board, platen temperature can lead actual resin cure, leaving a hidden timing gap that grows in thicker laminates.
- A thick laminate needs a press cycle based on its own thermal history
05 · Converted edges consume insulation distance
Holes, slots, bends and burrs decide whether a part installs safely.
After leaving material production, mica laminates or tapes are stamped, milled, slit or folded into motor-slot liners, spacers and thermal barriers. Tools interrupt the platelet-resin network, and edge cracks, burrs or delamination can shorten creepage paths and grow under assembly compression. Dimensional conformity on a drawing does not automatically preserve the parent-board performance at converted edges. Hole spacing and corner radii in a small insulating spacer can magnify local board variation, while a shifted punch clearance may start an interlayer crack that grows after fastening.
Moving holes close to an edge for nesting efficiency can invite interlayer peeling under impact and thermal cycling, while excessive margin consumes motor-slot or battery-module space. Tool wear, feed direction and the laminate’s directional character shape the cut, and one first-piece check cannot represent a full lot. Geometry and machining capability need connection through edge condition and assembly load.
During trials, machine the same part from several board positions and record tool life, feed direction, burr and hole-edge cracking before actual assembly and removal. Critical insulating edges receive magnified inspection and withstand testing; folded parts are checked for whitening and delamination at the target radius. Production sampling follows tool-use count instead of waiting for visible dimensional drift.
- Part acceptance must cover converted edges and real assembly load
06 · Motor insulation faces electric field, heat and vibration together
Slot liners and wraps must cooperate in the complete machine.
Mica in a motor may serve as slot liner, winding tape or end spacer in close contact with magnet wire, impregnation resin and steel core. Starting current raises temperature, electromagnetic force and vibration repeat, and coolant can change interface chemistry. Standalone withstand voltage and temperature class describe only part of performance; the insulation system also depends on compatibility and defect location.
Adding a thicker mica part as insurance changes slot fill and thermal paths and may raise wire bending or insertion force. The mica may not break down yet can damage enamel at an edge or leave voids after impregnation. Replacing the grade while keeping the old winding process ignores how thickness, surface and resin uptake redistribute the entire system. Tolerance stack-up among slot materials changes both copper space and impregnation channels, so the prototype needs actual fill factor and end-winding temperature rather than a check of one sheet thickness.
A material change begins with coil specimens that measure insertion damage, impregnation completeness and cured voids before combined thermal cycling, vibration and withstand tests. Failure teardown preserves the relative position of mica edge, wire enamel and resin interface to locate initiation rather than the worst burn. Assembly work also controls bend radius and tool contact surfaces. Partial-discharge inception and withstand behaviour after damp-heat conditioning help distinguish whether edge moisture, an interface void or the mica body first weakens insulation.
- Motor mica must be qualified as part of the insulation system
07 · A battery barrier must slow propagation, not merely resist flame
Thin barriers trade among compression, insulation and vent space.
Mica parts in battery modules often sit between cells, at module sides or near covers to provide electrical insulation and delay heat transfer. A thermal event is directional and brings gas, particles and expansion. Passing a flame test does not establish the same delay when the material is compressed into a narrow gap, so part geometry and fixation belong in propagation assessment.
Thinner barriers can raise energy density while reducing in-plane heat path and mechanical margin. More binder improves formability but may add smoke, shrinkage or surface-resistance change. Results cannot be compared directly when source temperature, contact pressure and back-side cooling differ. Pack design treats mica together with insulation, enclosure and vent paths rather than as an isolated material.
Screen materials under representative compression and contact area, then install candidate parts in the real module gap for cell heating or propagation trials. Record source position, back-side temperature, insulation state, cracking and vent route rather than only burn-through. A changed shape or fixing adhesive repeats critical duties instead of carrying a flat-coupon conclusion into a new structure.
- Battery thermal-protection results belong to a defined module structure
08 · A standard name must end in an installable lot
Documents, samples and production parts need one material identity.
A national-standard plan establishes shared mica-paper terminology and test direction and names participating organisations, but it does not prove thickness, binder or customer assembly performance for a particular lot. A producer may offer many papers, boards and tapes under natural or synthetic mineral routes with different binders and finishing. A purchase contract converts standard clauses into product identity, inspection and change-notification responsibility.
A generic test report can allow an old formula, another thickness or a laboratory sample to stand for current production. Demanding the full recipe is also unrealistic. What both sides need is reproducible product identity: paper type, binder family, manufacturing lot, critical performance range and a route for requalification after change. That balance protects know-how while retaining quality traceability.
At approval, the physical sample, drawing, performance sheet and package label share one revision, while incoming sampling covers roll or board position and abnormal samples remain until closure. Before changing mine source, binder, paper machine or press cycle, the supplier states the affected range and the customer chooses document review, material retest or installation trial by risk. Lot release follows agreed results, not company honours or a regional title. Package moisture and board flatness are rechecked after humid storage so conforming parts do not absorb water and warp while awaiting installation.
- Use product identity to connect standards, tests and assembly results
Sources and reading notes
Mica paper, board, tape and stamped parts require separate judgement in their final structures. Mineral type sets the starting material, binder chemistry governs bonding and volatiles, and thickness plus consolidation control assembly. Thermal or dielectric values belong with specimen orientation, environment and test method.
