Tengzhou small and medium CNC machine tools
The usefulness of a Tengzhou CNC machine appears in how one part changes from cold first piece to sustained production. Bed, guideway, screw, spindle, tool, fixture and compensation interact, so positioning accuracy needs model, travel, temperature and test method. A saw and machining centre are not the same CNC capability.
Formation and regional foundations
Tengzhou developed complete machines, functional units and controls, with Weida, Shansen and Sanhe offering distinct entries in machining centres, CNC panels and sawing equipment. Local plans and upgrade catalogues describe direction and project status, while no-load operation, standard test pieces and user-process validation remain separate; planned investment is not current performance.
A passing cold first piece does not guarantee end-of-shift dimensions. Spindle bearings, screw, motors and cutting generate heat, while bed and guideways turn gradients into position; tool wear, clamping and measurement add further effects. Meaningful acceptance places time inside accuracy.

Which heat source comes first when dimensions drift
Machine identity, control revision, tool and test piece share one test identity; compensation is not interpreted apart from mechanical condition.
- Bed and guideway datums — Bed levelling, guideway straightness and mounting-face relations form the mechanical datum for every machine motion.
- Ball screw and feed axes — Ballscrew, bearings, coupling and scale together shape positioning, reversal and travel-dependent error.
- Spindle and tool interface — Spindle taper, bearing temperature and holder contact carry rotational accuracy to the cutting edge.
- CNC parameters and compensation — Compensation tables and servo settings are valid only for the current assembly and thermal state, not as machine-independent files.
- Standard test-piece cutting — A standard test piece records roundness, squareness, contour and surface marks on one measurable material.
- Metrology and user part — Calibrated instruments establish measurement confidence, while the user part adds fixture, tool, material and production rhythm.
01 · Bed ageing decides whether datums keep moving
Casting stress does not disappear under paint.
A Tengzhou machine bed and column normally pass through casting, stress relief, rough machining and finishing. Paint protects the surface but cannot remove stress still locked inside the casting. Support positions and machining allowance also influence the shape of the guideway datum under later assembly loads. Straightness, flatness and twist therefore need the bed temperature and support arrangement beside the readings. One set of factory geometry figures cannot describe long-term stability.
If residual stress continues to relax after rough machining, a once-straight guideway face can bend slowly, and mounting the spindle head may add another deflection to the column. A short bed and a longer-travel casting distribute weight differently, so identical levelling points can disguise a structural difference as a machining error. The first sign may be unequal part size at opposite ends of travel, followed by rising compensation values. Parameter changes can then hide a datum that is still moving.
Acceptance can begin by recording the rough-machined datums on specified supports, repeating the measurements after the chosen ageing process, and allowing finishing only when movement has settled. After assembly, critical axes are measured again with the actual foundation points and major component weights, while temperature, support position and the measurement map remain in the record. A change in bed length, column mass or installation method calls for a new support scheme. Another model’s levelling layout or compensation table cannot establish stability under production load.
- Guideway datums need stability before assembly.
02 · Guideway assembly passes geometry to every axis
Parallelism, squareness and preload interact.
Linear-guide motion depends jointly on the mounting face, carriage preload, tightening sequence and lubrication. It does not appear simply because two rails have been bolted down. A local high spot changes running force as the carriage passes, while parallelism and squareness transmit error into an intersecting feed axis. End-point readings can miss a wave in the middle of travel, so straightness, running force and reversal behaviour are observed in sections across the full stroke, with results before and after tightening kept distinct.
When a carriage sticks over one region, the servo may use more force to hold position. Following error can still look small even though mechanical resistance has disturbed the tool path. Excess preload adds heat, whereas insufficient preload leaves slight movement at reversal. Rolling and sliding guideways require different lubrication and clearance logic. Judging both by the same feel can produce a smooth no-load stroke that later develops chatter, squareness error or repeatability drift during heavier cutting.
Assembly starts with cleaning and measuring the rail seats, locating the reference rail, and tightening from the centre toward the ends in the specified sequence. At each stage the carriage traverses the complete stroke while running force and geometry are recorded. The second rail is aligned only after the first is stable, rather than forcing a tight spot down with higher servo gain. Guards and lubrication hardware are followed by another check because hose pull or a wiper can alter motion. Control tuning has a sound mechanical basis only after full travel remains smooth under the intended load.
- Full-travel measurement reveals more than endpoints.
03 · Screw compensation must know how error changes with position
Pitch, support and heat jointly change axis position.
A feed-axis position curve contains the effects of screw pitch error, support-bearing preload, coupling alignment and operating heat. Every laser-interferometer point belongs to the mechanical condition at that moment. A cold-only scan describes only startup. As the screw and bearings warm, thermal growth may shift the whole curve or change its slope according to the support arrangement. Position error, repeatability, reversal error and axis temperature therefore belong in the same interpretation.
A beautifully corrected cold curve can drift in the opposite direction near the end of travel once the machine is hot. Coupling misalignment adds cyclic load, while excessive bearing preload raises temperature. Neither fault is cured by adding more compensation points. Replacing the screw, support bearing or coupling changes the geometry, so retaining the old table mixes the repaired axis with historical correction and makes repeatability figures difficult to compare.
Before compensation is created, the screw supports, coupling and lubrication are checked, and the axis cycles at representative speed until temperature approaches equilibrium. Full-travel scans are then completed both cold and thermally stable. Direction, dwell time, ambient temperature and axis temperature remain with the data, followed by an independent bidirectional sequence after correction. A repair or preload change invalidates the old curve. Removing obsolete correction and measuring again produces a table that belongs to the current mechanics and target working temperature.
- One compensation table belongs to the current mechanical state.
04 · Spindle thermal growth directly moves the tool tip
Speed, lubrication and tool overhang alter heat balance.
Bearing pairing, preload, lubrication, cooling and rotor balance jointly determine the tool-tip position at high speed. During acceleration, spindle-nose temperature and thermal growth do not stabilise at the same moment, and tool overhang magnifies a small angular change into tip displacement. Runout measured at one speed misses the heat history of a production programme. Temperature rise, axial growth, vibration and runout need to follow the same speed spectrum to explain how dimensions move over time.
With excessive preload, a cold spindle may feel rigid, yet bearing friction accelerates heating during sustained running and the tool tip gradually grows toward the part. Inadequate cooling can produce a similar drift, which is easily mistaken for a tool-offset error if only the final dimension is observed. A low-speed saw and a high-speed machining centre have different bearing loads, speeds and acceptance priorities. Transferring warm-up time or vibration limits between them hides the condition that actually governs failure.
The spindle is warmed through the speed steps and dwell times expected in its programme, with temperature, displacement and vibration acquired together at the nose. Once the curves approach equilibrium, tool-tip position is checked with the specified holder and overhang. A longer tool receives its own assessment. Continued temperature rise, a speed-specific vibration peak or non-repeatable growth leads back to preload, lubrication, balance and cooling rather than a temporary offset. The spindle is controlled only when it reaches a predictable thermal balance within the production rhythm.
- Vibration and temperature share the same speed history.
05 · Tool and fixture recombine machine error
Overhang, wear, clamping and locators interact.
Part dimensions record the combined behaviour of machine, tool and fixture. Holder runout changes the load on each cutting edge, overhang and wear alter cutting force, and fixture locators or clamping pressure can make a thin wall spring back after release. Even with unchanged machine geometry, different points in tool life produce different bores and surfaces. A test-piece record therefore includes holder, tool lot, accumulated use, locating datums and clamping settings, not merely the programme name and final dimensions.
Excessive tool overhang reduces system stiffness, while uneven clamping distorts the part during cutting. Together they can make a sound machine appear dimensionally unstable. A showcase piece cut with a new tool does not reveal edge wear or length differences after tool changes. Success in one material cannot cover another hardness or cutting condition because force and heat have changed. Assigning every deviation to the complete machine often misses the more direct tool or fixture cause.
Process validation begins by fixing locators, clamping sequence, holder and overhang. Parts are then measured with a fresh tool, at mid-life and near the planned change point. Tool-tip runout, clamped distortion and springback after release are observed at the same time, allowing the size trend to be associated with tool, fixture or machine heat. A new material, cutting geometry or workholding scheme requires new sampling points and variation limits. The earlier pass supports only its original combination.
- Test-piece results need tool-life position.
06 · CNC parameters matter only with the mechanical state
Acceleration, gain and filters trade speed against contour.
A CNC system uses acceleration, loop gain, feed-forward and filters to turn a programmed path into motor commands, but the physical response is constrained by motor inertia, screw load and mechanical friction. One parameter set may behave differently on a light straight move and a fast arc, and a cleared alarm does not prove that looseness has been repaired. Following error, contour deviation, current traces and oscillation frequency need the actual path, speed and load beside them. The parameter screen alone cannot describe cutting capability.
Raising gain can reduce low-speed following error yet excite oscillation at another speed. More filtering may smooth a trace while delaying corner response. If parameters are used to suppress a loose coupling, sticky guideway or screw clearance, the fault returns as a larger contour error under a different load. Functions available on a control panel are not the same as the complete machine’s cutting ability. Interpolation speed or nominal precision without the mechanical state can be mistaken for an actual machining result.
Commissioning starts by saving a traceable baseline and confirming that the guideways, screw, coupling and brake show no obvious mechanical faults. One control variable is then changed at a time, with the target straight moves, arcs and acceleration zones repeated while following error, motor current and part contour are compared. A new motor, transmission ratio or mechanical preload requires the settings to be checked again. The final tuning must hold the path at the required rhythm and retain margin for load changes, not merely create an attractive no-load trace.
- A cleared alarm does not mean the cause is fixed.
07 · A standard test piece records multi-axis error on one surface
Circles, hole patterns and slopes expose different combinations.
A standard test piece records interpolation, spindle, tool, structural stiffness and thermal state on one surface. A circular path can expose reversal and gain differences between two axes, a hole pattern reveals positional relationships, and slopes or texture may show vibration or tool attitude. Results are comparable only when programme, material, tool and measurement method are fixed. If the machine is not thermally settled or the gauge is at another temperature, changes in roundness, position and size may not share one cause.
Choosing an easy, short path avoids full travel, multi-axis interaction and sustained heating, so an attractive surface may not represent the target part. Periodic marks can come from the spindle, a feed axis or tool runout, and they are hard to locate without synchronous signals. A result in standard stock does not ensure stability in the customer’s material and cycle because cutting force, chip removal and tool life have changed. The piece is a combined diagnostic, not a universal approval for every application.
The cutting trial uses an agreed programme, material lot, holder and measurement method, with spindle warm-up and tool-life position stated in the record. Axis-error and spindle-vibration signals are acquired during machining. Circles, holes, slopes and surface texture are then measured separately to connect defects with signals. A changed path, material or gauge creates a separate comparison. Passing the standard piece is followed by validation of the user part in its own material and production cycle.
- Measurement method bounds what the piece can say.
08 · The user part places acceptance in real production rhythm
Operation split and measurement strategy change final capability.
The user part places the machine inside a real shift, where material-lot variation, tool changes, thermal cycles, operator rhythm and shop gauges all enter the result. The first piece may be cut cold, the twentieth after the spindle and feed axes have warmed, and the piece following a tool change carries a new length offset. Process capability, cycle time, tool life and defect modes need time order. Selecting the best unit cannot show that the batch remains within drawing tolerances.
A short demonstration often avoids replenishment, restart and near-limit tool wear, so the cycle appears comfortable even as sustained production drifts. Measuring only at shift end cannot reveal which tool change or material lot began the deviation. One accepted part does not cover every machine application: thin walls, difficult alloys and high-speed hole patterns place very different demands on heat, stiffness and chip removal. Generalising one success leaves the wrong margin for later production.
Production validation runs continuously for the intended shift, with sampling fixed at the first piece, warm-up interval, both sides of tool changes and shift end. Each measurement is linked to material lot, tool identity, offset change and stoppage. When the trend turns, the corresponding operation can be found on the timeline instead of applying one average correction afterward. Acceptance for that part is complete only when the batch sustains the drawing at the agreed rhythm and abnormal results have a clear response. A different part needs its own process limits and sampling plan.
- A sustained batch matters more than one showcase part.
Sources and reading notes
Machine performance remains tied to model, travel, speed, tool, environment and test object. Geometry, standard cutting and user process answer mechanical, cutting and production questions separately; regional firm counts and project investment do not guarantee one machine’s accuracy.
- The cluster is limited to small and medium CNC machines and functional units, excluding large turnkey systems and all Zaozhuang equipment.
- Positioning and repeatability need model, travel, temperature and method rather than a single best value.
- Projects in an upgrade catalogue remain distinct from current product capability; construction is not stable production.
- Saws, control panels and machining centres have different functions and cannot be treated as one delivery object.
