Shihezi carbon-silicon-aluminium materials
Carbon, silicon and aluminium are neither one material nor one continuous line. Graphite electrodes depend on coke sizing, mixing, baking, graphitisation and resistivity; silicon metal depends on quartz and reductant charge, furnace condition and iron, aluminium and calcium impurities; primary and aluminium-based materials depend on alumina, prebaked anodes, pot condition, melt treatment, chemistry and casting defects. The routes may share utilities and circular facilities, but each lot is released on its own standards and tests.
Formation and regional foundations
Shihezi’s energy, industrial parks and rail logistics supported energy-intensive materials and later extensions into high-purity aluminium, battery-foil stock, silicon processing and supporting carbon products. Park circularity, solid-waste utilisation and water-reuse figures describe shared systems; they do not replace a plant’s mass balance, unit energy or emissions record.
A quartz load, calcined-coke lot and alumina silo may share the park’s power, rail and environmental services but enter entirely different reactors. Understanding Shihezi carbon, silicon and aluminium means closing feed, run, test, energy and by-product records for each route, not merely drawing a longer chain.
Core geography: Centred on Shihezi Economic and Technological Development Zone and its chemical and new-materials park, covering three distinct routes: petroleum coke to graphite electrodes, quartz feed to silicon metal and silicon materials, and alumina to primary aluminium then high-purity aluminium or aluminium billets. Power, rail, waste heat and residue circulation are park conditions, not a universal product process
Three material routes and one park utility setting
Six nodes linking feeds, reactors, products and circular flows
Links show responsibility and material handoffs, not one merged carbon-silicon-aluminium line; shared utilities remain separately metered.
- Quartz, coke and alumina — Lot, size, moisture, ash and chemistry first determine the material route.
- Carbon forming and heat treatment — Calcining, recipe, mixing, forming, baking and graphitisation create electrode properties.
- Submerged-arc silicon furnace — Charge mix, electrodes, burden surface and tapping rhythm govern reduction and impurities.
- Aluminium potline — Alumina feed, anode use, bath temperature and ratio shape metal and energy use.
- Treatment, casting and processing — Silicon is graded and crushed; aluminium is degassed, filtered and cast as ingot, slab or foil stock.
- Laboratory, energy and destinations — Chemistry, properties, energy, dust, slag and heat have separate ledgers and destinations.
01 · Three routes begin with three feed lists
Quartz, carbon feeds and alumina do not fit one generic inspection sheet.
Quartz for silicon metal is checked for silica, iron, aluminium, calcium, size, thermal stability and soil contamination. Acceptable chemistry with severe decrepitation creates fines, changes burden permeability and can still disturb the furnace.
Electrode coke is stored by volatiles, ash, sulfur, true density and size, while binder pitch has softening and coking properties. Recycled fragments can enter a recipe only with known origin, heat history and ratio; not every black powder is equivalent.
Smelter alumina is checked for loss on ignition, size, flow and impurities; prebaked anodes have separate resistivity, density, reactivity and dimensional checks. Both enter a pot but perform different functions, so intake and consumption records stay distinct.
02 · Carbon performance is set during mixing and forming
Particle skeleton, pitch distribution and compaction faults survive later heat treatment.
Calcined coke is crushed and screened into a coarse-to-fine skeleton that balances packing with pitch coating. Damaged screens or drifting return ratios change pore structure and cannot be repaired simply by adding binder.
Mixing temperature sets pitch viscosity and wetting; too little time leaves poor distribution, too much promotes volatilisation and ageing. Feed weights, temperature, power and discharge condition link to each green body; appearance does not replace process records.
Extrusion or vibration forming controls pressure, vacuum, speed and tooling; cracks, lamination and density gradients often begin here. A small end-face notch can grow during baking and graphitisation, so green inspection records position rather than a simple pass.
03 · Baking and graphitisation are not one high-temperature step
Heating curve, furnace position and resistivity must reconcile by run.
Baking carbonises pitch and fixes structure. Fast heating can cause internal cracks as volatiles escape, while insufficient soak weakens coking. Chamber gradients, packing and position create within-run variation, so the loading map stays with inspection.
Graphitisation uses higher temperature to reorder carbon, with power input, core temperature and cooling influencing resistivity and stress. Transformer energy alone does not prove each electrode’s history; furnace position, loading and tests are read together.
After machining, diameter, length, ends and nipple threads govern assembly, while density, resistivity and flexural behaviour govern service. Dimensional conformity does not exclude hidden cracks; non-destructive or sampled results link to machining IDs.
04 · A silicon furnace is a moving burden, not just a recipe
Electrodes, permeability, temperature and tapping rhythm jointly alter reduction.
Quartz and carbon reductants are weighed and charged in batches, with size distribution maintaining gas paths. Excess fines crust the burden, while coarse segregation leaves local under-reduction; logs include charge position and lot.
Electrode depth, current, power and burden work form the reaction zone. Flares, slips and electrode instability are furnace signals, not matters to investigate only after chemistry fails; shift logs map actions to taps.
After tapping, ladle treatment, skimming and casting follow, and sample timing and position affect representativeness. Iron, aluminium and calcium define grade; one passing sample cannot hide ladle-to-ladle variation, so resampling rules precede delivery.
05 · Silicon grade is followed by size and use
The same chemistry may not suit the same downstream route.
After cooling, cast silicon is crushed and screened to order. Crushers and screens create fines, oversize and wear contamination. Size inspection samples the lot and states both limits; one uniform-looking photograph is not evidence.
Aluminium-alloy, silicone and other silicon routes use different impurity combinations and size windows. The national standard provides a grade basis, while contracts still specify analysis, rounding, retest and retained dispute samples.
Furnace, finished-lot and customer results can differ through sampling and preparation. Differences first trigger checks of tools, crushing, homogenisation and calibration before judging true furnace heterogeneity; averages do not erase outliers.
06 · Each aluminium pot builds the history of its metal
Feed, anodes, bath temperature and effects explain chemistry and energy.
Point feeding maintains dissolved alumina; excess can form sludge and shortage can trigger anode effects. Control alarms link to field action, feed lot and later metal analysis rather than being counted alone.
Anode position, cover, rod contact and consumption affect current distribution. Quality variation may appear as shedding, overconsumption or pot instability, so intake properties and pot behaviour need one identity.
Tapped mass, pot number, time and metal temperature form the pre-casting identity, while ladle mixing changes chemistry and trace scope. Potline total does not replace each ladle analysis, especially for high-purity or battery material with tight trace limits.
07 · Aluminium branches into ingot, slab or foil stock
Treatment, alloying, filtration and solidification are reset by use.
Remelting ingot is controlled by grade chemistry, with skimming, degassing and filtration reducing inclusions and hydrogen. Its standard does not automatically cover high-purity metal, alloy slab or battery-foil stock; the order names the right specification.
Planning, trial production, installation and full operation are four states for high-purity refining. Trial production on one line proves that stage only; it does not turn a planned 100,000 tonnes into annual conforming output.
Battery-foil stock also depends on melt cleanliness, trace elements, grain, segregation, shape and rolling behaviour. A smooth cast surface does not prove absence of pinholes or breaks at thin gauge; validation extends to agreed processing conditions.
08 · Circular use must close both mass and quality ledgers
Park ratios describe shared conditions; each plant meters each stream.
Furnace heat, potline heat, fly ash, dust, slag and reused water differ in composition and risk, and destinations depend on testing, permits and receiving process. Calling all of it circular hides storage, disposal and downcycling; mass balance retains those exits.
The park’s 93 percent solid-waste utilisation and 93.2 percent water reuse are aggregates with their own denominators, year and coverage. They do not prove zero waste for one furnace or replace permits and self-monitoring.
Delivery files connect feed lot, furnace or pot, heat-treatment position, chemistry and properties, package and by-product destination. When resistivity, silicon impurities or aluminium inclusions fail, the affected range is fixed and root cause follows that route; park efficiency does not answer a product complaint.
Sources and reading notes
Park linkage, green factories, solid-waste use and water reuse retain source year and describe shared circular conditions only. Planned, under-construction, trial and operating status remain distinct. Silicon metal and remelting ingot use their current national standards, while high-purity aluminium, graphite electrodes and foil stock follow contracts, plant tests and applicable industry methods.
- Corps material describes power–silicon metal–polysilicon–monocrystalline silicon and coal-power–aluminium ingot–aluminium products chains in the park; these are enterprise combinations, not one entity’s process.
- A 2024 Corps commerce source records 93 percent industrial-solid-waste utilisation and 93.2 percent industrial-water reuse for the development zone, both park-level measures.
- The NDRC’s 2022 account separates trial production, equipment installation and later construction for the Tianzhan high-purity aluminium project, so planned scale is not full operating output.
