HELLO CHINA

INDUSTRY CLUSTER · New energy & green mobility

Shenzhen Bao’an lithium-battery equipment manufacturing

Electrode-tension variation, winding misalignment or drifting formation data seldom belongs to one machine alone. A dependable battery-equipment project first freezes cell dimensions, chemistry, takt and process windows, then connects roll identity, recipe revision, machine state and inspection results before acceptance through sustained production and recovery records.

Formation and regional foundations

Bao’an’s cluster grew from long collaboration among battery-manufacturing demand, specialised equipment makers, core components and automation services. Official totals describe regional density, not that every new-energy firm makes battery equipment; this profile retains only legal entities with verifiable equipment production, inspection or line-integration roles.

Lithium-battery manufacturing places continuous webs, discrete cells, dry and clean environments, precision motion, vacuum processes and many data channels on one line. A local correction can push error downstream, so design, commissioning and acceptance must trace the entire process through product identity.

Core geography: Centred on manufacturing areas around Tangtou in Shiyan, Fuhai and Yanluo in Bao’an District, Shenzhen, covering coating and electrode inspection, winding or stacking, cell assembly, vacuum drying, electrolyte filling, formation and grading, inline inspection and whole-line integration. Cell production, electrode materials and photovoltaic inverters are not counted as equipment manufacturing here.

Responsibility chain from cell definition to sustained production

Six nodes across material, equipment, data and acceptance

Links represent handoffs of specifications, physical identity, parameters, state and results. They do not imply that any three firms supply every process, and cell makers are not counted as equipment makers.

  • Cell specification and chemistry — Cylindrical, prismatic or pouch form, chemistry, dimensions, tolerances and target capacity are fixed first.
  • Process route and plant conditions — Process order, dry and clean conditions, logistics, floor loading, utilities and hazardous areas jointly set the boundary.
  • Electrode making and inline measurement — Coating, drying, calendering, slitting and areal-density measurement share roll identity and tension records.
  • Winding, stacking and cell assembly — Alignment, tabs, separator, welding, insertion and sealing are configured for the cell form.
  • Drying, filling, formation and test — Moisture, vacuum, fill quantity, channel accuracy, temperature and test results enter one product history.
  • Acceptance, changeover and service — Sustained production, recovery, spares, program revisions and requalification for new products close delivery.

01 · When tension wanders, do not chase one roller first

Roll, speed, temperature and loop state must be reconstructed on one timeline.

After coating streaks or slitting drift, retain roll ID, splice position, unwind diameter, line speed, tension curve, steering correction and the active recipe. Adjusting one roller may suppress the symptom while leaving splice, friction or sensor-zero problems for the next roll.

Separate the fault across unwinding, accumulator, coating, drying, traction, calendering and slitting zones, then locate where measured tension first departs from command. If upstream and downstream both compensate, check master-follower speed and material elongation before raising loop gain.

Confirmation cannot rely on an empty run. Use production material through roll change, acceleration, steady speed and deceleration, verify areal density, edge position and tension return together, and bind the new parameter revision to the test roll.

02 · Ask what the cell is before asking whether equipment is compatible

Cylindrical, prismatic and pouch cells share process names, not every fixture or window.

Before quotation, provide dimensions, tolerances, tab design, case material, separator and electrode thickness, target takt and sampling rules. “Multiple formats compatible” alone cannot show whether guiding, gripping, welding, vacuum and inspection truly cover a new cell.

A chemistry change can alter slurry rheology, drying load, compaction window, environmental moisture and formation recipes. Mechanical fit does not prove that temperature, vacuum, time and measurement ranges remain suitable.

The compatibility list should state acceptance-ready numeric ranges and distinguish recipe-only changes from fixture, gauge-head or process-module changes. Any new model outside the validated range requires renewed risk and capability confirmation.

03 · Areal density can pass while its error source remains unknown

Inline measurement, laboratory checks and coating control need a shared reference.

An inline thickness or areal-density system first records reference specimen, zero, scan position, environment and product recipe. A curve without roll ID and cross-web coordinates shows variation but cannot trace it to the die or roller position.

Laboratory sampling checks the inline system and should not select only the flattest section. Sampling roll start, middle, end and both sides while retaining cut size, weighing conditions and delay separates coating variation from offline handling error.

Before closing the control loop, set rate limits, maximum correction and fallback conditions. When a measurement drops out, jumps abnormally or calibration expires, the machine should alarm and retain the disposition for that roll instead of correcting forever from the last value.

04 · When winding or stacking shifts, separate error layer by layer

Electrode, separator, registration, handling and inspection can accumulate small offsets into a cell defect.

For winding, separate positive electrode, negative electrode, separator and mandrel coordinates. For stacking, retain each vision result, pick-place position, sequence and clamping state. A final image alone cannot reveal whether error arose in feeding, registration or transfer.

High speed magnifies static charge, material curl, vacuum pickup, guide clearance and structural vibration. Commissioning establishes a controlled low-speed baseline, then raises speed stepwise while observing the error distribution rather than trialling immediately at target takt.

After material or format change, use the specified sample size to confirm alignment, tab position, burrs, short circuit and image decisions before downstream release. One conforming first piece does not prove stability across splicing, replenishment and normal restart.

05 · Correct fill quantity can still fail through drying or sealing

Moisture, vacuum, time, weighing and leak checks must bind to the same cell.

Vacuum-drying acceptance defines loading pattern, tray count, temperature points, vacuum curve, hold time and exposure between unloading and filling. An empty chamber reaching setpoint does not prove stable internal moisture in a full load of cells.

Filling equipment writes electrolyte lot, target quantity, before-and-after weight, vacuum steps, dwell and enclosure environment to the cell record. Top-up, reweighing or manual release retains reason and authority so final total does not hide an abnormal first fill.

Post-seal leak, appearance and weld results are judged with drying and filling history. If defects concentrate by fixture, weld head or shift, containment follows the shared condition rather than repairing only the cell that alarmed.

06 · When formation curves drift, check channels and temperature before recipes

Current, voltage, temperature and time each need a calibratable reference.

A formation anomaly retains cell lot, channel, rack position, temperature curve, current-voltage samples, recipe revision and interruption reason. Repeated drift at one position points first to channel, contact, power and cooling rather than a change to every product recipe.

Channel calibration covers the operating range and retains reference instrument, environment, before-and-after error and the affected interval. One overall machine certificate cannot identify which channel affected which cells and when.

Grading rules fix rest time, temperature, cut-offs, capacity calculation and abnormal-data handling. A rerun can support investigation but must not silently overwrite the first result; both runs remain with the final disposition.

07 · Connected machines do not automatically make an integrated line

Interfaces must define identity, state, handshake, exception and recovery together.

Build an equipment-system interface table defining product ID, order, recipe, machine state, quality result, timestamp, unit and revision. Identically named fields cannot be mapped when meanings differ; “complete” may mean motion ended or quality released.

Handshake tests cover normal flow, duplicates, timeout, network loss, machine restart, host restart and buffered retransmission. Recovery must neither process one cell twice nor mark an unfinished step conforming.

Networks and host systems coordinate production but do not replace local interlocks, emergency stops or guarding. On communication loss, each machine’s safe state, work-in-process disposition and manual recovery authority must agree across risk assessment and operating documents.

08 · Acceptance is more than one run at target takt

Sustained production, changeover, restart and documentation jointly demonstrate usability.

The acceptance plan defines product, material lots, run duration, statistics, planned stops, fault classes and nonconforming disposition in advance. Average takt is read with yield, utilisation and manual interventions; a short sprint does not prove stable capacity.

Changeover acceptance starts at the last old-product unit and records line clearance, fixture replacement, recipe call-up, first-piece inspection and release. Excluding all offline preparation understates actual production loss.

Handover includes equipment list, drawings, program and recipe revisions, backup and recovery, calibration plan, wear parts, alarm response, training and residual risks. When later cell dimensions or chemistry leave the validated range, requalification is safer than copying old settings.

Sources and reading notes

Cluster identity and scale use public MIIT, Shenzhen and Bao’an records; company roles are cross-checked against corporate sites, government notices and securities filings. National standards explain equipment, interface, machinery-risk and electrical-safety boundaries, while each project remains governed by its contract specification, risk assessment, calibration records and site acceptance.

  • The MIIT review list confirms the national cluster name and status for Bao’an lithium-battery equipment manufacturing.
  • Shenzhen’s official profile records 10 national specialised “little giant” firms and 40 provincial or municipal specialised firms in the cluster.
  • The same profile says more than 80 percent of core components are developed in house and four key chain links are covered.
  • National standards separately address general equipment requirements, communication interfaces, risk assessment and machine electrical safety; a working connection does not replace safety and process acceptance.

  • Shenzhen Dacheng Precision Equipment Co Ltd — Dacheng Precision manufactures inline electrode thickness and areal-density measurement, vacuum drying and X-ray inspection equipment. Public filing distinguishes its Bao’an registered entity from Dongguan operating bases, so its cluster role is presented through the Shenzhen legal and technology link without relabelling Dongguan manufacturing as a Bao’an factory.
  • Shenzhen Time High-Tech Equipment Co Ltd — Time High-Tech supplies fully automatic vacuum-drying systems for lithium-ion battery production and treats in-plant logistics as an adjacent line. Its Shenzhen headquarters is in Bao’an while public material lists manufacturing bases elsewhere, so this profile does not attribute all group capacity to Bao’an.
  • Shenzhen Zhongji Automation Co Ltd — Zhongji Automation manufactures cylindrical, prismatic and pouch cell-assembly equipment in Bao’an and supplies lines spanning welding, insertion, inspection, filling and logistics. Public cases demonstrate specific assembly and integration capabilities, while each project must still confirm dimensions, takt and process windows in specifications and acceptance.
