Shanghai Pudong advanced general-purpose chip design
A failed build, missed bandwidth target or sample power overrun rarely belongs to one line of code or one physical block. Dependable design links workload, instruction and precision, RTL revision, process corner, package memory, driver and test conditions into a reviewable revision chain, with product model and maturity stated separately.
Formation and regional foundations
Zhangjiang combines design density, shared verification platforms, finance and fabrication-packaging interfaces into a collaboration network. Its advantage shortens feedback among architecture, tapeout and software enablement; it does not make different firms’ ISAs, toolchains, orders or production capability interchangeable.
The difficulty of a general-purpose chip is not transistor count alone: hardware, compiler, driver and application must answer to the same interface. Pudong’s design density accelerates feedback, yet every performance comparison still needs model, precision, revision and test conditions.
Core geography: Centred on Shanghai Integrated Circuit Design Industrial Park and the core of Zhangjiang Science City, covering general-purpose CPUs, GPUs, RISC-V processors, EDA and IP, verification and foundational software. Wafer fabrication, packaging and test, ordinary consumer chips and Pudong’s entire IC output are excluded.
General-purpose chip responsibility chain from workload to deliverable software stack
Six nodes across requirement, architecture, implementation, verification, silicon and ecosystem
Links show handoffs of versioned inputs, acceptance conditions and defect feedback; park scale is not split into company orders, and tapeout is not equated with production.
- Workload and acceptance — Fixes model, data type, batch, latency, throughput and power boundary.
- Architecture and ISA — Selects cores, memory hierarchy, interconnect, extensions and software-visible behaviour.
- RTL and IP integration — Controls source, parameters, clocks, resets, interfaces, constraints and licence scope.
- Verification and physical closure — Closes functional coverage, formal checks, timing, power and process corners.
- Tapeout, package and board — Connects mask revision, package, memory, power and signal integrity to silicon.
- Driver, compiler and qualification — Qualifies systems, frameworks, runtimes, tools and applications with a version matrix.
01 · Turn “it does not run” into a locatable interface problem
Compiler, driver, runtime and silicon each have revisions; the error location is not necessarily the root cause.
A reproduction record first fixes chip model, board revision, firmware, driver, compiler, runtime, operating system, command line and input. “Latest” cannot recreate the same environment on another machine.
Build failure is separated among front-end syntax, target instruction generation, linking, kernel loading and runtime calls. For extensions, record architecture string, ABI and flags rather than summarising compatibility as “supports an ecosystem”.
A minimal reproducer preserves the failing path while removing unrelated data and framework layers. It lets the chip team locate the defect and shows whether the fix came from compiler patch, driver update or hardware workaround.
02 · Compute figures must travel with the workload
Architecture name, peak rate and delivered throughput answer different questions.
State whether the task is scalar control, vector compute, graphics, training, inference or scientific computing before choosing latency, throughput, performance per watt or total cost. Dividing CPU and GPU peaks ignores control flow, memory and parallelism.
A test table states model or program revision, input size, batch, data type, sparsity, build flags, clocks and power cap. A low-precision peak does not replace a high-precision result, and sparse values are not directly comparable with dense values.
Bottleneck analysis reads core utilisation, memory bandwidth, cache hits, interconnect, host transfer and synchronisation waits together. Idle arithmetic units may be starved for data, so adding cores does not automatically shorten end-to-end time.
03 · Architecture choices must reach software-visible behaviour
Instructions, cache consistency and exception models are interface contracts.
Processor definition derives core count, issue width, vector length, memory hierarchy, on-chip network and external interfaces from workloads. Each choice states the scenario improved and the area, power and verification cost paid.
The ISA record covers base version, extension set, privilege layers, byte order, memory model and ABI. For RISC-V, the architecture name alone cannot show whether existing binaries run; extensions and toolchain combination set portability.
Software-visible registers, exception priority, performance counters and consistency behaviour freeze at architecture stage and enter conformance tests. Quiet late changes can create rare failures in already compiled software.
04 · Control RTL and IP revisions before discussing schedule
Parameters, constraints and generation scripts are part of chip design.
A code baseline includes RTL, configuration, memory macros, interface descriptions, clock-reset plan, synthesis constraints and generation scripts. A commit without external macro revisions still cannot rebuild the same netlist.
Third-party IP is listed by function, process, revision, parameters, deliverables and licence territory, with simulation and physical views matched. A bridge can translate protocol format but cannot replace throughput, timing and error-response verification.
Clock, reset and power crossings receive separate review of synchronisation, isolation, state retention and power sequence. Rare metastability or false wake-up left in design is often hard to reproduce after silicon returns.
05 · Verification proves boundaries, not test-case volume
Coverage matters only when tied to risk and sign-off.
The verification plan maps architecture clauses to directed tests, random tests, assertions, formal methods, emulation or prototypes and names an owner. Requirement changes update the map so new functions do not fall into gaps.
Functional, code and assertion coverage and defect trends are read separately. Even at target, uncovered items, waivers and critical state space are reviewed; one percentage cannot hide a high-risk corner.
Every defect retains seed, trace, expected and actual behaviour, first affected revision, fix commit and regression result. An intermittent issue gets more observability and environment capture; “rare” is not a closure reason.
06 · Power and timing require process corner and temperature
Synthesis, place-and-route and measured values do not belong in one column.
Performance, power and area reports state netlist, library, process corner, voltage, temperature, activity, workload and tool revision. Typical-corner estimates compare options but do not replace worst-corner sign-off.
Timing closure checks setup, hold, crossings, clock skew and on-chip variation and reviews every exception. A false-path mistake can make a report green while moving real risk into silicon.
When power exceeds limit, separate leakage, clocks, memory, interconnect and compute, then check voltage-frequency policy and thermal boundary. Down-clocking may avoid a thermal limit but throughput and service level must be requalified.
07 · Tapeout freezes one revision; it does not prove production
Mask, package, memory, board and bring-up plan must align by revision.
The tapeout checklist freezes netlist, physical database, timing-power reports, manufacturability checks, test structures and accepted risks. “Launch”, “first power-on” and “silicon return” mark different stages and cannot be rewritten as volume delivery.
Package choice balances pins, power integrity, cooling, memory bandwidth, substrate routing and board space. If die peak is limited by package power or memory bandwidth, the system still misses application throughput.
Bring-up proceeds through rails, clocks, reset, debug, memory and high-speed interfaces while retaining instrument setup and board serial. Functional pass is followed by reliability, yield, software stability and customer qualification before production claims.
08 · A software ecosystem lives in a version matrix, not one compatibility claim
Driver, compiler, runtime, framework and application jointly determine usability.
The support matrix lists firmware, driver, compiler, runtime, operating system, framework, container and server configuration by chip and board. A combination is supported only after qualification; installable components do not prove end-to-end support.
Interface compatibility covers signatures, precision, concurrency, memory consistency, error codes and performance semantics. If source builds but accuracy drifts or throughput collapses, support is conditional rather than a simple pass.
Release notes list new capability, known limits, fixes, upgrade order and rollback and bind issues to silicon stepping and software revision. Field feedback becomes reproducible tests that drive patch, workaround or next-silicon change.
