Qiyang functional fabrics

Qiyang functional-fabric performance comes from both textile construction and finishing. Umbrella cloth balances repellency and folding, luggage cloth stresses abrasion and coating adhesion, and tent fabric adds hydrostatic, ultraviolet and fire conditions; one test conclusion cannot cover all three.

Formation and regional foundations

After receiving textile-industry transfer, Baishui assembled spinning, weaving, printing, dyeing and finishing. Dongjun, Dalian and Zhenyang chose different fabric and process routes. Environmental facilities, solvent recovery and wastewater control became prerequisites for dependable functional finishing.

Water resistance, breathability, flame behaviour and ultraviolet durability are not labels carried by yarn. They emerge from textile construction, dyeing, coating, lamination and heat setting. Qiyang’s Baishui area links these operations, while umbrella, tent, luggage and knitted fabrics retain distinct loads and test methods.

Six stages where a grey fabric acquires function

How construction, colour and surface formula shape the article together

The flow follows fabric state and does not imply that every cloth uses every operation. Knitted, woven and laminated products select their necessary stages.

  • Yarn and base colour — Fibre, twist and dope colour set the start.
  • Weaving or knitting — Density, construction and tension form the grey cloth.
  • Dyeing and washing — Shade, residue and dimensions change in wet processing.
  • Coating and lamination — Polymer films or adhesive layers create barriers.
  • Heat setting and rolling — Width, mass and hand stabilise here.
  • Umbrella, tent and luggage tests — Article folding, sewing and weathering complete judgement.

01 · Yarn and construction define the fabric skeleton

Strength, extension and pores form on the machine.

Warp-weft density, construction and yarn twist define load paths and base pores. Plain weave has many intersections and relative dimensional stability; twill and satin alter surface, softness and abrasion; knitted loops provide stretch. Qiyang serves umbrellas, tents, luggage and elastic uses, so the textile skeleton must be separated by duty before finishing rather than corrected afterward.

Reducing density for lower mass can increase coating strike-through and tear risk, while coarser yarn added for strength changes folding volume and surface uniformity. Area mass alone cannot reveal fibre strength, construction or tension. Even one specification can develop loose edges, bowed weft or local pores after loom-tension drift, later appearing as leakage or print misregistration.

Development samples state fibre, yarn count, twist, warp-weft density and construction, with mass, strength and pores measured across the width. After beam, yarn or maintenance changes, the first section receives width and weft checks rather than using coating to hide abnormal grey cloth. Finished feedback returns to roll and loom time so tearing or leakage can reach its structural origin. The first length also retains a full-width tension and warp-stop map; a persistently slack selvedge can carry local extension into a tent anchor or between umbrella ribs after cutting.

  • Confirm the textile skeleton fits the end use before finishing

02 · Weaving defects become more expensive after coating

Broken ends, density bands and oil need early control.

High-speed production can create broken ends, missing picks, density bands, bow, needle lines or oil. Some remain subtle on pale grey cloth but become shade, thickness or repellency gaps after dyeing and coating. Umbrella panels fold repeatedly and tent seams carry load, so local structural defects are more than appearance. Grey inspection prevents defects from gaining value downstream.

Using intense final inspection to find every flaw slows work and can still miss small periodic defects, while broad acceptance may place one flaw in a critical panel. Tolerance depends on location: a luggage base or tent load strip is more sensitive than a hidden decorative zone. Grading needs connection with cutting layout and article structure rather than points per hundred metres alone.

Loom monitoring and manual inspection share a defect classification with location, length, direction and machine. Repairable flaws are corrected and rechecked before finishing; unusable sections receive digital and physical marks for cutting layout. When a defect repeats periodically, heddles, reed, let-off or needle bed are checked before production continues instead of sending the problem to wet processing. Once defect coordinates travel into nesting software, a small oil mark can avoid a printed face and an open pick can stay away from a loaded seam, turning grading into real scrap reduction.

  • Grey-fabric defects should be dispositioned by final panel location

03 · Colour travels from dye bath into the article under many lights

Dyestuff, fibre and thermal history control shade and fastness.

Dyeing binds dyestuff or pigment to a specific fibre through liquor ratio, temperature, pH and time. A shade can differ in daylight, retail lighting and cameras, while coating and heat setting alter depth and gloss. Luggage, tents and umbrellas face different washing, rubbing and sunlight, so colour approval needs its illuminant and later finishing route. A dark polyester may match in daylight yet shift under warm retail light, so overall colour difference needs separate observation from metamerism across illuminants.

Approving bulk from a small laboratory dip can miss full-vessel circulation, roll tension and pretreatment residue. Adding dye or time to chase shade can damage fibre, reduce fastness and raise wastewater load. Lots with similar instrumental difference may still look unlike through texture and gloss. Colour control must combine chemistry, equipment and visual judgement.

The approved standard retains base cloth, dyed state and full coating, with instrumental and visual limits under agreed light. The first vessel samples head, middle, tail and cross-width positions and receives judgement after finishing. A repeat order with changed feed or dyestuff uses a small-vessel calibration, while an abnormal run retains bath and fabric for pretreatment, addition and temperature review.

  • Colour approval must cover the fully finished fabric across its width

04 · Coating and lamination create barriers while changing hand and folding

Primer, topcoat, film and base cloth must remain bonded.

Functional fabric may use polyurethane, acrylic or another coating or laminate a film to gain hydrostatic, wind or surface performance. Formula viscosity, blade gap, speed and drying set add-on and pores, while base-cloth preparation controls adhesion. The same chemistry on another textile can behave differently through penetration and surface energy. A cross-web wet-film difference can grow during evaporation, while unequal edge airflow and base-cloth temperature may leave opposite sides of one roll with different peel strength.

More coating often raises hydrostatic resistance but adds mass, reduces softness and extends drying; too-fast drying can skin the surface while leaving moisture inside and cause blocking in the roll. Opening a structure for vapour transmission can create defects that pass liquid water. Functional measures involve structural trade-offs and cannot rise without limit or ignore sewing and folding. If a solvent-borne coating is wound too early, residue migrates slowly between layers, so blocking and odour often emerge in the warehouse rather than on the coating line.

Coating trials record base lot, formula, viscosity, blade, line speed and each oven zone, measuring add-on and bond across the width. Samples receive folding, low temperature or damp heat before hydrostatic and peel work, with microcracks and whitening observed. A formula, film or base-cloth change runs a short section first, and accepted plus transition rolls receive separate identity. After a short length passes, a production-size roll rests and its inner and outer layers are retested because core heat and pressure can expose blocking absent from a laboratory swatch.

  • Coating performance must be retested after folding, ageing and base-cloth bonding

05 · Water resistance and vapour transfer are different transport problems

Liquid-water pressure and vapour flux cannot replace each other.

Repellency describes droplets rolling from the surface, hydrostatic testing asks whether pressurised liquid penetrates, and moisture transmission describes vapour movement. These structures differ: a surface can repel well while seams leak, or hold high pressure while feeling clammy. Tents add condensation and ventilation, while umbrella cloth folds repeatedly, so the word waterproof cannot explain the use.

Reducing film thickness for vapour transfer can weaken pinhole and post-abrasion water resistance. More surface repellent improves initial beading but may decay after washing and rubbing. A flat laboratory sample also lacks seams, folds and the warm-moist gradient from a person. Product design identifies the most important failure scene before combining material and construction instead of comparing one maximum number.

Use fully finished fabric for separate repellency, hydrostatic and vapour tests under defined conditions, then sew representative seams and corners for spray or water-pressure trials. Ageing combines folding, abrasion, washing and ultraviolet according to use. Record test face, climate and conditioning time for comparable lots, and locate leakage in base cloth, film, needle holes or seam tape. Seam-tape temperature, pressure and travel speed remain with the fabric lot; whether hydrostatic failure follows a needle hole or adhesive layer points to a different correction.

  • Repellency, hydrostatic resistance and vapour transfer must be reported separately in the article

06 · Ultraviolet and flame performance must face actual service life

Additives can migrate, decay and alter other properties.

Outdoor textiles face sunlight, rain and heat that age fibre, colour and coating; ultraviolet additives only slow part of the process. Flame-retardant finishing changes burning or char formation and depends on thickness, washing and coating combination. Tents, shade products and apparel have different rules and ignition scenes, so one flame class cannot move directly across products.

More ultraviolet absorber can shift colour or coating adhesion, while flame retardants may raise moisture uptake or alter hand. Testing only new cloth overstates long-term behaviour, but an arbitrary severe sequence can combine unrelated extremes. Ageing should come from article duration, cleaning and sun exposure rather than a dramatic but uninterpretable result.

First establish product regulation and location, then choose a representative sequence of ultraviolet, washing, damp heat and folding. Measure strength, colour, coating bond and target flame response before and after ageing and see whether functional loss accompanies structural damage. Formula changes use the same base cloth as control, while production controls additive concentration and setting temperature. Exposure fixes the illuminated face and tension state because a tent exterior and folded inner layer receive different radiation, and wrong sampling orientation can distort the life judgement.

  • Weathering and flame results must include structural and functional change after ageing

07 · Wet processing needs control of water, solvent and heat

Environmental performance and product stability share process origins.

Desizing, dyeing, washing and some coatings use water, auxiliaries or solvents, creating wastewater whose colour, salts and organics vary by formula and lot. Some Qiyang textile plants also operate wastewater treatment and solvent recovery, connecting functional finishing with environmental engineering at production. Recovery affects workplace concentration and safety, while treatment stability depends on production not releasing unexpected high loads.

More end-of-pipe capacity cannot correct a dye addition error or a sudden coating-cleaning load. Reusing saline water in sensitive dyeing to save water can create shade variation and scaling. Higher solvent recovery still leaves risk if leaks or incompatible streams mix. Resource circulation needs routing by water quality, use and hazard rather than one total percentage.

Each process records water, chemicals and solvent input, and abnormal discharge enters separate equalisation rather than shocking treatment. Reuse water is graded by conductivity, colour and specific ions for cleaning or less sensitive work. Coating lines monitor exhaust and recovery pressure drop and check compatibility before formula change; product shade and environmental parameters are analysed together for a common source.

  • Resource reuse must respect water quality, solvent compatibility and product process

08 · A conforming roll must survive cutting, sewing and real folding

Article construction redistributes textile stress and protection.

Umbrella panels are radially sewn and repeatedly stowed, tents combine large panels, seams, guy points and ground contact, and luggage adds folds, zips and a high-abrasion base. Conforming roll hydrostatic, strength and colour tests establish flat-material capability only; needle holes, seam allowance, corners and accessories alter the article. Qiyang fabric still requires product-level qualification. Rotating warp and weft during nesting also rotates extension and tear paths, so a bag handle or tent corner can deform very differently in the same fabric.

When a fabric supplier stops at roll measures and an article maker checks only sewing appearance, failure falls between them. A coarse needle or incompatible seam tape can damage coating, while wrong cutting direction concentrates extension at a load point. Product testing should not collapse material and process responsibility into leakage but identify the failing layer through location, cross-section and operation. Needle size, needle heat and stitches per centimetre jointly affect coating damage, while surface finishes interfere with heat sealing; the assembler must return these settings with leak location.

The first fabric lot becomes representative umbrella, tent or luggage articles through actual cutting, printing, sewing and seam sealing. Tests include relevant opening cycles, spray or pressure, abrasion, load and sunlight, retaining the complete failed structure. Approval freezes cloth, direction, needle-thread and seam material, with affected work repeated after any change. The approved article remains through replenishment so whitening or leakage at a fold can be compared directly with the original cloth, sewing direction and seam material.
