Qixian glassware
Qixian glassware retains both mouth blowing and automated forming, two routes that cannot substitute for one another. A 2024 Shanxi University of Finance and Economics survey reports 59 producers, 225 supporting firms, annual capacity of 280,000 tonnes and an export share above 70%. Those figures show cluster density; material, annealing stress, rim dimensions, decoration adhesion and food-contact requirements remain batch matters.
Formation and regional foundations
Qixian built craft and export experience around mouth-blown ware before adding automated forming, intelligent furnaces, controlled grinding and digital management. Batch composition and melt condition decide whether glass can be blown, pressed or machine formed; annealing freezes residual stress, and grinding or decoration alters edges and surfaces. Each stage can leave cracks, stress or migration risk beneath a clear appearance.
Glass looks most dramatic as it leaves a mould or blowing iron, but it is far from complete. Melt viscosity shapes it, wall variation drives uneven cooling, and the lehr must relax stress; cutting, grinding, painting and firing then disturb the surface again. A durable glass is not merely beautiful when hot—it remains intact after cooling, washing and temperature change.
Core geography: A Qixian glassware manufacturing system where mouth-blown workshops, automatic forming, annealing and grinding, decoration, quality testing and export services operate in parallel
Qixian glass from red heat to a food-contact article
Risks left by melt, forming, annealing, grinding and decoration
Nodes follow temperature and surface state, not fixed orders among firms; lines connect the article with corresponding checks.
- Batch and furnace lot — Raw lots, recipe, cullet ratio and melt period form glass identity.
- Melt working point — Temperature, viscosity and bubble condition determine forming cadence.
- Blow or machine form — Manual rhythm and mould cycle separately control wall, dimension and rim.
- Annealing lehr — Ware passes soaking and controlled cooling for its wall and load to relieve stress.
- Grinding and polarised check — Rim, dimensions, cracks and stress pattern are examined at the cold end.
- Paint and firing — Coating lot, position and firing profile determine adhesion and contact boundary.
- Wash and thermal-use tests — Finished ware faces thermal shock, water resistance, decoration adhesion and use checks.
01 · Fifty-nine producers share a town, not one glass melt
Producer, support, capacity and export measures belong to a 2024 survey.
A 2024 Shanxi University of Finance and Economics survey records 59 glassware producers, 225 supporting firms in packaging, logistics and moulds, annual capacity of 280,000 tonnes and exports above 70%. The MIIT review list confirms cluster identity. These records describe local structure and formal recognition, not a common recipe or process across 59 producers. Manual and machine-made ware are counted separately so capacity keeps its process meaning.
Annual capacity describes regional capability under stated conditions, not actual 2024 output or order availability at one company. Export share covers products, markets and a survey period; a mouth-blown stemmed glass and machine-made tumbler can have very different cadence and value. The four regional measures cannot assess wall thickness or thermal resistance of one glass. A firm’s furnace, forming and cold end may sit at different upgrade stages and should not be labelled uniformly smart.
The supplier sheet first selects mouth blowing, machine forming, grinding, decoration or a combined role, then records glass family, form, available line and target market. Regional capacity stays in the context column; the legal entity quotes model, minimum lot, mould charge and lead time. Export orders separately confirm packaging, labels, destination requirements and testing scope. Company name, plant address and product number must agree on samples and reports before comparison.
- All four measures carry a 2024 survey date.
- Capacity and actual order availability remain separate.
- Companies are first classified by forming and decoration role.
02 · Dahua’s oxy-fuel furnace changes melting conditions, not every product answer
Smart monitoring must connect recipe, gob and forming line.
Shanxi’s Guangzhou office records Qixian firms, public platforms and Dahua-related smart-manufacturing projects, while provincial reporting names the Dahua smart factory as a local demonstration direction. A 2026 event reported ignition of a 150-tonne oxy-fuel furnace. Ignition marks a project stage; it does not establish stable annual capacity or production of every form. The furnace project also separates design pull, trial-operation level and stable daily output.
Oxy-fuel combustion changes flame, thermal efficiency and furnace atmosphere; new melting conditions require homogenisation, bubble control and forming adaptation. Central control can display temperature, pressure and oxygen use continuously without detecting every stone, cord or fine bubble. Recipe changes, higher pull or a different cullet ratio can move the stable operating window. Defects concentrated around a recipe change point first to transition segregation, not more cold-end sorting.
Assess the smart furnace through one article in production, connecting raw batch, melt period, gob temperature, forming machine and cold-end defects. Examine isolation of transition ware during a recipe change or disturbance and sample trends in bubbles, stones, cords and colour. Record project stage, design capability and stable production separately rather than replacing continuous quality data with an ignition photograph. Every process adjustment records reason and approver so control settings are not overwritten silently.
- Furnace ignition is a project milestone.
- Control data cannot detect every glass defect.
- Stable production is judged by continuous cold-end trends.
03 · At working viscosity, blowing, pressing and machine forming diverge
Viscosity and temperature define the forming window; machine name is only an entry.
Shanxi manufacturing reporting describes Qixian’s shift from mouth blowing toward higher-end smart manufacture and from ordinary to lead-free glass. Glass families have different softening and working ranges; a blower judges the gather, while a machine line controls gob mass, mould temperature and cycle. Both begin with melt condition but create different dimensional variation. Lead-free status still requires a named glass formulation and test, not an industrial-upgrade phrase.
Glass that is too hot can sag, vary in wall or stick to a mould; too cold and it will resist forming or retain folds. Mouth blowing adjusts each piece, while a machine line depends on stable gobs and mould heat balance. At higher speed the mould may not cool, shifting dimensions and surface. Comparing hourly count alone hides yield and changeover time. Manual gathering interval and machine gob stability enter their own cadence-loss analysis.
During trial production, record melt temperature or a corresponding process indicator, piece mass, mould number and cycle, taking consecutive samples before and after speed increases. Measure mass, rim, height and wall distribution on mouth-blown ware; for machine ware also count seams, eccentricity and mould sticking. Divide accepted pieces by actual running time and time mould changes, cleaning and transition ware separately. Breaks and mould seams are logged by position to distinguish glass, tooling and operation.
- Forming routes diverge at glass working condition.
- Speed changes mould thermal balance.
- Net yield includes changeover and transition time.
04 · Honghai’s blowing rhythm must resolve into wall and rim
Handmade variation can be style; cracks and sharp rims cannot.
A Shanxi government account visits Qixian Honghai Glass, recording blowers gathering molten glass on pipes more than two metres long and mouth forming it; at that 2023 moment, more than sixty blowers worked on two lines. The report establishes Honghai’s mouth-blown setting and date, not a permanent current workforce or output. Current Honghai products and contacts are checked through the legal entity rather than old staffing figures.
Mouth blowing can allow individual character in bowl, bubbles or decoration, but rim diameter, standing stability, capacity and sharp defects still affect use. Gather mass, breath, rotation and mould contact jointly determine wall thickness; shift or colour changes can spread weight and shade within a set. Craft variation and quality defect need an agreed boundary. Minor variation within sets follows an agreed matching rule rather than an inspector’s ad hoc choice.
Seal samples from several blowers and shifts rather than one best piece. Limit samples define acceptable bubbles, texture and small dimensional movement and unacceptable cracks, stones, sharp edges and marked eccentricity. For sets, group by height, mass and colour, then inspect rims and bases by touch before packing, isolating grinding defects separately. Limit samples carry date and lot and are replaced after wear or fading to prevent criterion drift.
- Honghai’s blowing scene carries a 2023 date.
- Handmade variation is separated from sharp defects.
- Sealed samples cover several workers and shifts.
05 · The unseen lehr decides whether a glass may crack later
Wall, loading and cooling profile jointly leave residual stress.
After forming, a glass surface and interior cool at different rates; thick bases, slender stems, handle joints and abrupt wall changes are especially prone to gradients. Qixian’s move from manual to automatic production does not remove annealing; each form needs suitable lehr temperature, belt speed and loading. Ware that looks intact can retain stress visible under polarised light. Thick-base and slender-stem ware may need different loading orientations because their slowest cooling regions differ.
Reusing a profile from the previous product can cool a thick-base glass too quickly or waste time on a thin wall. Cross-lehr temperature differences, spacing and belt-speed variation create positional differences within a lot. Testing only a few pieces at the end may miss edge locations or heat-up and cool-down transition ware until thermal shock exposes them. Polarised images carry lehr position and time so persistent cross-belt anomalies can be seen.
For a new form, map wall thickness and record lehr setpoint, actual temperature, belt speed, orientation and stacking. Sample left, centre and right, early and late periods and the thickest structure for polarised stress and the relevant temperature-difference test. Link anomalies to lehr position before adjusting the profile; identify all transition ware after a power or belt interruption. The first ware after restart is sampled separately to confirm recovery from the thermal interruption.
- Annealing remains necessary on automatic lines.
- Lehr position affects stress within a lot.
- Transition ware after interruption is identified as a lot.
06 · Hongyi painting and firing alter the glass surface again
Decoration position, colour and firing profile define adhesion and contact boundaries.
Shanxi government reporting names Hongyi’s 5G-related work as a Qixian demonstration direction, while science reporting records Shanxi Hongyi Glassware using mobile access to furnace temperature, voltage, current, water quality and oxygen use. Public company material identifies glassware painting as a significant activity. These facts support manufacture and decoration roles, not every decoration order. Hongyi’s role remains tied to its legal entity rather than all Qixian decoration work.
Paint, gold decoration or decals may approach the rim or remain on a non-contact outer wall, changing wear, washing and migration risk. Underfiring weakens adhesion; overfiring can discolour, dull or add thermal history. A platform may record furnace temperature without proving coating thickness, position and firing profile for every glass. Metal decoration near a rim faces repeated cleaning, so adhesion work uses the intended wash method.
The decoration order uses a developed drawing to mark drinking rim, interior and outer wall, with colour or decal lot and supplier documentation on the work order. First-off checks cover colour, position and adhesion, repeated after washing for loss and dulling. Food-contact use brings appropriate safety work for the decoration location. The firing profile binds to product number and is confirmed after material change. Shade is judged under an agreed light and background so transparent glass is not distorted by surroundings.
- Hongyi has public ware and decoration roles.
- Furnace data is not per-piece decoration acceptance.
- A developed drawing marks rim and decoration zones.
07 · Clear is not safe by itself: rim, water resistance and thermal shock differ
Optical appearance, mechanical integrity and contact use are judged separately.
Qixian ware can become drinkware, tea and coffee sets, vases or decorative objects after melting, grinding and decoration. The university survey lists ten product series and export markets, showing broad use. Drinkware requires rim, thermal-shock and material-contact attention; vases emphasise stability, dimensions and load; decoration for an ornament is not automatically suitable near a drinking rim. Sampling for each use covers early, middle and late hot-end periods rather than one favourable set.
Visual freedom from bubbles and scratches covers only part of appearance. A fine rim crack can grow in dishwashing or temperature change, residual stress can cause sudden breakage after impact, and glass family and decoration affect water resistance and migration. One food-grade label loses sample, condition and limit and does not cover mechanical risks for non-food use. A thermal-shock report states whether samples were ground or decorated.
Build a use-based matrix: drinkware covers rim, capacity, stability, thermal shock, water resistance and relevant contact safety; handled or stemmed ware adds joint and load work; vases and decorative ware cover tipping, edges and decoration adhesion. Reports identify model, glass family, decoration state, sample count and method, without transferring conclusions to another form. Contact-safety conclusions apply to the tested recipe and decoration, not a later supplier substitution.
- Ten product series contain different use risks.
- Food grade cannot replace named tests.
- Report conclusions do not transfer across forms.
08 · Follow one thermal crack across Qixian’s cold end
A visit starts from fracture location, not showroom styling.
Qixian’s producers, supporting firms, public platforms and export services form a dense network, while mouth blowing, automated forming and decoration may belong to different entities. Public material establishes industrial context and some company roles; visits still need confirmation of production time, furnace safety and photography limits. Hot-end safety governs the itinerary. The plant supplies protective equipment and standing instructions before visitors approach the hot end.
Ten perfect display glasses may show only selection ability. A retained sample broken after thermal shock can be read for an origin at rim, thick base or decorated area, then followed into grinding, annealing, wall and furnace data. This quickly tests cross-process linkage. If each department shows only its passing record, the anomaly loses ownership between stages. Fracture markings and origin can distinguish grinding scratches, thermal stress and impact.
Select one form and breakage scenario in advance. Begin at the cold end with retained ware, polarised pattern and grinding record; observe lehr loading and profile next; then return to forming, gob and furnace batch. Decorated ware adds firing and wash work. Use one product number at every stop and leave with probable causes and required further tests. Follow-up work states measurable conditions and sample count so it can be repeated.
- Hot-end access follows plant safety.
- A thermally cracked sample is traced backwards from the cold end.
- Decorated ware adds firing and wash routes.
Sources and reading notes
Glassware evaluation first fixes glass family, forming method and intended use. Variation accepted in mouth-blown form does not excuse a rim crack, while machine consistency cannot replace thermal-shock and food-contact checks. When decoration, grinding or furnace profile changes, appearance alone is insufficient; affected stress, dimensions, adhesion and migration return to review.
