Ningbo Fenghua pneumatic components
Before compressed air reaches a cylinder, it has been compressed, cooled, filtered, dried, regulated and carried through distribution. Every pressure loss and leak is continuously paid for at the compressor, while valve response, low-temperature sealing and fitting bore alter machine cycle. Fenghua pneumatics is best understood as a complete circuit rather than isolated catalogue models.
Formation and regional foundations
Fenghua developed an early pneumatic-component base, with valve, cylinder and supporting manufacture in areas such as Xikou and Jiangkou. Major firms and public-service platforms extended products toward integrated control and varied duties. Plans establish spatial and enterprise foundations; pressure, flow, temperature, medium and life tests establish a specific model.
A production-line manifold needs millisecond response, a bus-door cylinder must overcome seal resistance on a cold morning, and a precision gripper cannot damage a part when pressure fluctuates. Fenghua valves, cylinders, fittings and air preparation serve different settings, so selection works backward from motion and environment.

Five circuit sections from compressed air to completed motion
How pressure loss, response and leakage pass through Fenghua components
Air preparation sets cleanliness and dew point, manifolds distribute flow, tubing and fittings deliver pressure to cylinders, and end motion returns shock and air demand to control. System efficiency belongs to the whole path.
- Filtration, drying and regulation — Particles, water, oil and pressure variation are managed before the manifold.
- Valves and manifolds — Effective flow, switching time and exhaust path determine cycle.
- Fittings, tubing and exhaust silencing — Bore, length, bends and silencer backpressure create line loss.
- Cylinders and end effectors — Bore, stroke, sealing and cushioning convert air into motion.
- Line, door and gripping duty — Load, temperature, dust and cycle frequency determine real life.
01 · Compressed air is not free power
Leakage and pressure loss keep the compressor working.
Compressing air produces substantial heat; cooling, drying and distribution then impose pressure losses and require their own equipment before air reaches the actuator. If compression heat is not recovered, later cooling discards that energy directly. Every cubic metre already carries an electrical cost. Undersized valves, long tubing, clogged filters or fitting leaks force higher source pressure or longer supply, so completed cylinder motion alone does not establish circuit efficiency.
Many machines use one high supply pressure and local regulators for different loads. Leak flow rises with absolute pressure, so higher pressure magnifies loss through the same opening. That simplifies commissioning but wastes differential pressure at light-duty stations. Slow motion is also often blamed on low pressure when exhaust backpressure or circuit bore is responsible. Raising the header may hide the issue while increasing flow through every leak and wear on seals.
An efficiency audit can measure pressure and flow at compressor room, machine inlet, valve inlet and both cylinder chambers, separating a cycle into clamp, hold, return and standby. Air per motion also compares fast-wasteful and slow-efficient solutions on one basis. Lower local pressure for light duties and inspect storage and bore for peaks. Measure baseline leakage during shutdown, isolate zones by valve, and verify repairs through air used per accepted part.
- Evaluate the circuit by air and electricity used for one completed motion.
02 · Air quality defines the environment of spools and seals
Water, oil and particles alter friction and blockage differently.
Cooling compressed air releases water, pipe corrosion creates particles, and some compressors introduce oil mist. Pressure dew point must be read against the coldest pipe wall, not compressor-room ambient. Small orifices and pilot valves are especially sensitive to blockage, residual water can freeze in cold duty, and seal materials vary in oil and lubrication compatibility. Air preparation should be selected for the most sensitive downstream component rather than one universal filtration grade.
Finer filtration generally raises pressure loss and maintenance burden, while an unnecessarily low dew point consumes more energy. Rust and seal fragments can intermittently block valve orifices and escape a static air sample. Mixing legacy lubricated equipment with non-lube components can create under-lubrication or seal swelling. Air quality must balance reliability, energy and compatibility with existing machines, including seasonal temperatures beyond the compressor room.
Design air quality from the farthest, coldest and most sensitive station, defining allowable particles, oil and pressure dew point with sampling at dryer outlet and machine inlet. Adding one high-demand machine can alter pressure and moisture behaviour at the end of an old network. Replace filters using differential-pressure trend as well as calendar. A new seal or valve type should trigger review of lubrication policy so the component is not incompatible with residual oil in old piping.
- Set filtration, dew point and lubrication for the most sensitive component.
03 · Catalogue manifold flow is not end flow
Simultaneous motion and exhaust backpressure redistribute the circuit.
A manifold concentrates solenoid valves on common supply and exhaust bases, reducing tubing and simplifying wiring. Common-gallery size and inlet position can make distant manifold stations starve first. Actual flow still crosses base passages, valve orifices, fittings and tubes, while simultaneous cylinders compete for shared sections. A dusty or frozen exhaust silencer creates backpressure that slows return and changes pressure in both chambers.
Selection software often reports single-valve flow under standard conditions, while a machine may start several actuators within a short interval. Exhaust throttling changes backpressure and speed and cannot correct major supply-side loss. Adding cylinder consumption without timing overlap still misses peak pressure sag and shifting sequence. A larger manifold is not the only answer: staggered motion, local receivers and zoned supply can be more economical and limit the effect of one failure.
Before designing a manifold, build a timing chart for filling, holding and exhausting each cylinder, then calculate instantaneous demand in shared passages. Spool switching also depends on pilot pressure and coil voltage and needs simultaneous measurement. Fast pressure sensors at the inlet and worst branch can show minimum pressure and response spread during concurrency. Silencers, flow controls and long tubes belong in the prototype test because a bare-valve bench cannot replace them.
- Size supply, orifices and silencers for worst concurrency.
04 · Cylinder seals harden first in the cold
Breakaway friction can exceed the steady running load.
Theoretical cylinder force follows pressure and piston area, but actual output loses seal friction, backpressure and side load. Seal recovery slows in the cold, altering static leakage and breakaway friction together. In cold conditions, some seal materials stiffen and grease viscosity rises, increasing breakaway pressure. A bus door or outdoor machine is most vulnerable on the first movement after cold soak, while repeated cycles warm the assembly and can appear normal.
Increasing supply pressure to overcome cold delay raises closing impact, air use and seal stress; opening flow controls can make motion too fast after warm-up. Condensation or ice on a rod can damage wiper and main seal during the first retraction. Separate seal material, lubrication, bore margin, guide resistance and exhaust backpressure. If the external mechanism side-loads the rod, bush wear can make cold symptoms worsen with age.
A cold-duty prototype should test the first start after specified temperature and soak, recording breakaway pressure, full-stroke speed, end impact and leakage before observing warm behaviour over repeated cycles. Cushion adjustment can produce different end impact under cold lubricant viscosity. Measure external guide resistance separately so mechanism binding is not blamed on the cylinder. After seal or grease changes, repeat thermal-humidity and life work to ensure cold improvement has not removed hot margin.
- Compare cold-soak breakaway pressure, leakage and speed rather than room-temperature force alone.
05 · Fitting bore becomes significant along long tubing
Several local restrictions can leave slow pressure recovery at the end.
The nominal tube size of a push-in fitting may exceed its minimum internal bore, while elbows, tees and speed controls add local resistance. Tube area can narrow further through cut burrs or an over-inserted tube end. Tight bends narrow flexible tubing, and long runs add volume that must fill and exhaust at every reversal. Small, fast cylinders are especially sensitive; a quick valve cannot overcome a restricted path.
Moving a valve cabinet farther away late in machine layout often leaves tube size and cycle expectation unchanged, turning a previously sound circuit slow. Overrestrictive noise control trades lower sound pressure for a longer cycle. A larger header helps supply but end fittings and restrictions can still dominate pressure loss. Bringing the manifold closer shortens air paths but exposes it to dust, heat, vibration and limited service access, so layout balances pneumatics and environment.
Circuit confirmation can use production fittings, actual length and minimum bend radius, measuring dynamic pressure at valve, line and cylinder port. Dynamic pressure waveforms show whether restriction lies at supply, cylinder chamber or exhaust. If response is insufficient, pressure-loss share guides whether to enlarge a section, move the manifold or alter timing. Maintenance instructions should mark prohibited bends and approved tubing so a softer or smaller-bore replacement does not change the design.
- Include fittings, bend radius and tube length in response calculations.
06 · Precision gripping needs force control, not just arrival
Holding a part and not damaging it are separate requirements.
A pneumatic fixture converts pressure into clamping force through cylinder and linkage, and near toggle lock a small pressure change can create a larger contact-force change. Pad area and hardness determine local stress from the same total force. Part size, surface and stiffness alter load distribution. A position sensor proves arrival, not that a thin wall remains undented or that the workpiece will not creep under cutting.
More clamping pressure can reduce slip while distorting the part during machining, with dimensions springing back after release. Coolant and surface oil alter gripping friction and can make dry tests optimistic. Less pressure protects the surface but may lose location under vibration. The useful window depends on pad material, support, friction, linkage gain and process load. Cylinder theoretical force alone ignores these conversions and pressure variation.
Fixture commissioning can establish the relationship between supply pressure and actual gripping force using pressure and thin force sensors, then test the thinnest, slipperiest and highest-process-load parts. Internal leakage in holding or check valves gradually shortens retention after air loss. Check force decay from leakage during hold and prove safe retention or release after air loss. Changeover records should include pressure, pads and support positions rather than only a program number.
- Define the gripping window through pressure, contact and mechanism gain.
07 · Maintenance should begin before motion becomes slow
Pressure drop, leakage and response drift provide early signals.
A loading filter raises differential pressure, worn seals increase internal or external leakage, and spool contamination lengthens switching. Grouping cycle time by temperature and load reveals degradation more clearly than a mixed average. These changes often appear first as rising air use, slight cycle drift or intermittent sticking at one temperature. By the time the machine stops, several stations may be affected. Simple pressure and flow trends can reveal pneumatic degradation early.
Replacing every component on a fixed calendar overmaintains clean service and can be late in dusty or high-cycle duty. Colour, size and origin of removed contamination can trace pipe corrosion or lubrication issues. Recording only the failed part is also insufficient because slow motion may originate in upstream air quality, common distribution or external mechanics. Maintenance should combine filter differential, static leakage, valve response and cylinder friction to locate where degradation begins.
Critical machines can retain baseline inlet pressure, minimum end pressure, air per cycle and motion time, then monitor change by shift or week. Wrong reconnection after maintenance creates new faults, making port identification and reset checks essential. During shutdown leakage checks, isolate sections progressively and repeat the same duty after repair. Inspect removed spools, seals and filters for wear and contaminant type, using findings to adjust filtration, lubrication and spare intervals.
- Schedule filter, seal and spool work by trend.
08 · Selection works backward from machine motion
One port size cannot replace full operating duty.
Fenghua offers broad ranges of valves, cylinders, air preparation and fittings. A vertical load can fall after pressure loss, so safe state depends on mechanical locking and circuit design. National designation and local plans establish the enterprise base but do not select the right combination for a machine. Bus doors, automation manifolds and precision grips prioritise cold, cycle and force differently; the same bore behaves differently with tube length, side load and exhaust conditions.
A catalogue cross-reference for an old part easily misses effective flow, seal material, cushioning and electrical response. Weld spatter, cleaners or food-process vapour in the environment determine protection and materials. A replacement may fit physically yet change cycle, air use or safe failure. Compatibility is not thread and outline alone; it is the same motion under worst duty and acceptable behaviour when air, power or cleanliness deteriorates.
A request to a Fenghua supplier can include circuit, timing, load, stroke, speed, air quality, tube length, temperature, cycles and service access. Changing spool centre function within one family can alter pressure and motion during shutdown. Prototype tests should use actual mounting and piping while recording first cold motion, continuous temperature, leakage and air-loss response. The final bill of material locks critical materials and interfaces so production substitutions do not change validated conditions.
- Put force, speed, environment, life and safe failure into one requirement.
