Ningbo Beilun die-casting moulds

Shrinkage, flash or heat cracking in a die casting cannot automatically be assigned to the die. Reliable delivery links part revision, gating and venting, steel heat, treatment, cooling, surface process, trial settings, samples and repair coordinates. Acceptance jointly addresses dimensions, internal quality, thermal balance and life.

Formation and regional foundations

Beilun formed close links around Daqi across die design, steel treatment, CNC and EDM, surface strengthening and casting validation. Official park figures describe regional scale and concentration, not shared quality liability. Each die still separates responsibility through contract, drawing revisions, trials and acceptance records.

A die-casting mould works under hot metal, high-pressure filling and repeated thermal cycles, while casting defects also interact with alloy, machine and settings. A usable die is not merely dimensionally conforming: it establishes a stable window on a defined casting cell and leaves every repair, parameter change and life result for the next decision.

Core geography: Centred on the Daqi high-end automotive mould park and nearby manufacturing areas in Beilun District, Ningbo, covering die design, die steel and heat treatment, machining and assembly, surface strengthening, trials and repair. Plastic moulds and ordinary casting production without mould-engineering responsibility are outside this profile

Version, material and trial responsibility chain for die-casting moulds

Six nodes from part requirements to life feedback

Links show handoffs of drawings, heats, processes and samples; they do not make the die maker automatically responsible for alloy melting, casting-cell safety or production maintenance.

  • Part revision and casting requirements — Alloy, walls, datums, internal quality and downstream conditions are fixed first.
  • Die layout and thermal-flow design — Parting, gating, cores, ejection, cooling and machine interfaces are reviewed together.
  • Steel, rough machining and heat treatment — Heat, part ID, hardness, structure and distortion correction remain traceable.
  • Finishing, cooling and surface — Cavity dimensions, circuit flow, fits and strengthened layers are inspected separately.
  • Assembly, die trial and sample approval — Die motion, casting settings, consecutive samples and measurements form one trial lot.
  • Handover, life and repair feedback — Cycles, failures, repair coordinates and revision reasons return to the next design.

01 · Do not repair the die at the first sign of porosity

The same defect may originate in alloy, melt, filling, venting, cooling or part design.

When a trial casting shows shrinkage, cold shuts or gas pores, retain the sample with alloy heat, melt and die temperatures, vacuum, shot curve, intensification and cooling time. Altering a runner from photographs alone can write melt or machine variation into the die revision.

The defect is located by cavity, wall transition, rib, machining allowance and flow junction, then matched to fracture, sectioning or nondestructive results. A surface sink and internal shrinkage may look related but require different feeding, venting and thermal responses.

Responsibility analysis starts from one sample lot and one parameter set. Casting process, die structure and product design may all change, but each iteration changes explainable variables and preserves before-and-after samples and data, so a fix is not accepted without understanding it.

02 · Close parting, gating, venting and core pulls in design

Manufacturability review must see the casting, die, machine and downstream machining together.

After the part model reaches the die maker, alloy grade, shrinkage, draft, datums, critical walls, machining stock and allowed distortion are fixed. A later change to a wall or sealing face also changes parting, ejection and hot spots, so an old runner conclusion cannot simply carry forward.

Gate speed, filling order, overflows and vents address specific defect risks rather than visual symmetry. Slides, angle pins and inserts avoid jet erosion while leaving real space for cooling, sensors, service and assembly.

The review records clamping force, plunger diameter, sleeve fill, vacuum interface, spray and extraction method. A die that fits the machine does not necessarily have a viable process window; limited equipment capability can masquerade as a die fault during trials.

03 · Die steel must carry its heat identity into the cavity

Material, forging, rough machining and heat treatment jointly determine cracking risk.

Moving and fixed halves, slides and highly loaded inserts are selected for temperature, thermal cycling, erosion and size. Purchasing records connect mill heat, section, inspection report and receipt ID; a grade alone cannot explain cleanliness and structure differences between heats.

Rough machining leaves distortion stock and controls stress at sharp corners, deep grooves and section changes. Large blocks and cores need defined stress relief; skipping intermediate treatment to save time often postpones failure until finishing or production thermal cycles.

Quenching, tempering, hardness and microstructure results bind to each part ID, with straightening and rework recorded separately. Acceptance is not final hardness alone; loading, ramps, soak, cooling and temper cycles must suit the section.

04 · Cooling circuits decide more than cycle time

Thermal balance affects dimensions, soldering, fatigue cracks and casting structure.

Deep drills, baffles, spot cooling and oil circuits are checked against cavity hot spots, slide travel and bolts. Connectivity on a drawing does not mean equal flow in service; plugs, elbows and hoses add pressure loss.

Completed circuits receive continuity, flow, pressure and leak checks, with IDs marked on the die and connection drawing. Reversed supply and return or a throttled branch after a machine change invalidates the temperature field established in trials.

Thermal imaging, core temperature or casting temperature after stable cycles can check balance, but measurement points and conditions stay fixed. One reading cannot replace continuous-production observation, especially across restart, spray variation and local cooling effects on dimensional drift.

05 · After finishing, fits and surfaces still need proof

Dimensional inspection, recast layer, polishing and surface treatment carry distinct risks.

Finishing and EDM follow a datum-transfer plan linking electrode IDs, offsets and program revisions. A conforming cavity dimension at one point does not prove assembled position; inserts, slides and parting faces are rechecked in one coordinate basis.

EDM recast layers, sharp edges and tool marks can initiate heat cracks or aluminium soldering, so removal and polishing direction depend on the working face. Chasing a mirror finish can alter radii, clearance or texture floor; appearance and dimensional function are accepted together.

Before nitriding, coating or laser strengthening, substrate hardness, surface condition and masked areas are recorded; layer depth, hardness, distortion and cracks are rechecked afterwards. Local repair carries coordinates and area rather than being hidden by one overall hardness value.

06 · A die trial proves a window, not one good sample

Assembly motion, process settings, continuous cycles and measurements must align.

Before mounting, lifting points, locating ring, sprue, ejection, slides, limits, connections and guards are checked, followed by dry motion for interference. Die assembly and casting-cell safety are signed separately; die acceptance does not substitute for machine interlocks.

The first trial seeks stable filling, then narrows speed transition, intensification, vacuum, die temperature and spray ranges. Each setting maps to cavity, cycle and sample IDs; selecting only the best casting destroys evidence of continuity and variation.

The trial report records dimensions, internal quality, appearance, release, flash, cycle and die motion. If later machining, sealing or welding is required, sample evaluation includes those allowances and properties so a seemingly acceptable casting does not fail downstream.

07 · Turn flash and heat cracks back into process evidence

A fault tree is more reliable than intuitive grinding or welding.

Flash can result from inadequate clamping, debris, die-set distortion, an incompletely seated slide or excessive local pressure. Check machine trace, location and die temperature before measuring parting and guidance; grinding the parting face first may enlarge the leak path.

Heat cracks are logged by position, direction, length and cycle count, then compared with steel heat, treatment, surface process, preheat and cooling records. Welding without correcting the thermal gradient or sharp geometry can move weakness to the repair boundary.

Soldering, scoring and ejector marks require simultaneous review of draft, surface, local temperature, spray and ejection timing. Extra release agent may sustain output but can affect porosity, later coating or the workplace, so it is recorded as a controlled deviation.

08 · Use the life ledger to shape the next design

Accepted samples, repair coordinates and cycle counts make experience reusable.

The handover set includes final model, drawings, material and treatment records, cooling diagram, spares list, measurements, trial settings and approved-sample status. Drawing revision matches the physical die, including shop-floor corrections.

Production logs insert replacement, welding, polishing, nitriding, dimensional drift and downtime against cycles and events. Maintenance is not calendar-only; erosion zones, hot spots and moving parts receive risk-based inspection thresholds.

At end of life, first-off, stable-period and late-life data are reviewed together to separate material, structure, process and maintenance causes. The successor die inherits verifiable reasons, not a vague request to strengthen it; supplier performance also reflects defect closure and delivered life.
