Jinchang Jinchuan nickel, copper and cobalt materials
Jinchuan’s resource and refining base explains feed and process origin but does not automatically qualify every materials lot. Nickel sulfate is judged by metallic impurities and solution behaviour, cathode copper by purity and surface, copper foil by thickness, pinholes and roughness, and alloy powder by size and morphology; results must map to a legal entity and lot.
Formation and regional foundations
Jinchuan built mining, concentration and refining around associated nickel, copper and cobalt resources and extended into high-purity metals, salts, alloys, powders, copper foil and battery materials. Different entities handle nickel-cobalt, copper and nickel salts; group totals, subsidiary capacity and lot quality are not interchangeable.
When a laboratory finds elevated metal impurity in nickel sulfate, the cause may be feed mixing, leach carryover, purification selectivity, mother-liquor recycle or sampling contamination. Only linking mass balance, solution tank, crystallisation lot and raw analytical data reveals the source.
Core geography: Centred on Jinchuan District’s refining and advanced-materials base, linking nickel, copper and cobalt refining, solution purification, electrolysis or electrowinning, nickel and cobalt salt crystallisation, alloy and powder production, copper-foil electrodeposition, battery-material conversion, packaging and analytical testing
From refined feed to packaged material
Six lot handoffs for nickel, copper and cobalt materials
Nodes show handoffs of material, solution, morphology and analytical responsibility; the route changes for metal, salt, foil, powder or battery material.
- Refined feed and lot — Intermediate grade, impurities, moisture and origin set purification load.
- Leaching and solution purification — Acidity, redox, precipitation and extraction separate target metals and impurities.
- Electrolysis, electrowinning or crystallisation — Current, temperature and solution composition form metal cathodes or salt crystals.
- Foil, powders and battery materials — Electrodeposition, atomisation, synthesis or firing turns basic products into specific materials.
- Chemistry, morphology and performance — Trace impurities, size, surface, thickness and properties are tested by use.
- Clean packing and materials release — Entity, grade, lot, test method and packing atmosphere enter delivery documents.
01 · Separate feed identity from product grade first
Ore grade is not finished-product purity.
Refining feed may be concentrate, matte, blister copper, intermediate salt or recycled material, each with different moisture, target metal and impurity profile. Receipt records source, sampling and settlement lot; a mine name does not replace assay.
A feed lot needs specified incremental sampling and preparation to form a representative sample. Size and density segregation make a surface grab unrepresentative of a truck or bin, and sealed referee samples remain reviewable.
Production routing follows the target product because high-purity cathode, nickel salt, battery material and alloy powder tolerate different impurities. Pooling all nickel- or cobalt-bearing feed raises purification load and breaks feed-to-product traceability.
02 · Leaching turns a solid problem into a solution problem
Dissolving the target also controls which impurities follow.
Leach temperature, acidity, redox, solids ratio and residence jointly determine extraction. More acid or time can also dissolve extra iron, copper and other impurities, so recovery is assessed with downstream purification burden.
Residue in reactors, filters and lines can cross lots. After changeover or maintenance, rinse endpoint, cloth condition and dead-leg drainage are verified; an anomalous first solution is held rather than diluted into a normal tank.
Leach residue may still contain recoverable metals or controlled substances, so mass balance and characterisation determine its route. “Utilised” alone does not show where nickel, copper and cobalt went; dry mass and assays reconcile feed, product and discharge.
03 · Solution purification sets trace-impurity limits
Precipitation, extraction and ion exchange each have a selectivity window.
Adjusting pH and oxidation removes impurities such as iron and aluminium, but an overly broad window loses target metal. Reagent dose, time and temperature combine online trends with laboratory confirmation rather than relying on endpoint colour.
Solvent extraction selectively transfers metals, while entrainment, emulsions and phase carryover pass problems downstream. Interface, phase ratio, extractant condition and scrubbing often explain impurity spikes better than target concentration alone.
Purified solution is released against a product-specific impurity list. Battery salts track ions that affect electrochemistry and precursor synthesis, while metal electrowinning tracks cathode morphology and current efficiency; one generic pass cannot cover all routes.
04 · Metal cathodes and salt crystals split here
Current and crystallisation conditions turn purified solution into deliverable material.
Nickel, copper or cobalt electrolysis controls electrolyte, temperature, current density, electrode gap and circulation. Uneven current creates nodules, thick edges or rough surfaces and can trap electrolyte and impurities.
After harvesting, cathodes are washed, stripped, sampled and packed, with both surface defects and purity inspected. Inclusions, burning or mechanical damage can affect downstream melting and rolling even when chemistry passes.
Nickel sulfate and other salts form through evaporation, concentration, crystallisation, separation and drying. Supersaturation, seed and cooling change crystal size and caking, while mother-liquor recycle can accumulate difficult impurities.
05 · Copper foil brings electrochemistry to micrometre scale
Thickness uniformity, pinholes and surface profile jointly affect battery use.
Electrolytic copper foil deposits continuously from purified electrolyte on a rotating cathode drum. Copper ion, acidity, additives, temperature, current density and flow set grain and thickness; drift can create a continuous defect along the roll.
Drum condition copies onto foil; scratches, contamination or roughness variation can create streaks and pinholes. Online thickness sees only part of the risk, so areal mass, appearance, pinholes, roughness and tensile properties are judged by roll.
Surface treatment and slitting provide oxidation resistance and adhesion without tearing thin foil. Burrs, edge wave and winding tension amplify during coating or stacking, so packaging fixes the core and limits moisture and sulfur exposure.
06 · Morphology defines powder and precursor use
Equal average size can hide different distributions and structures.
Metal or alloy powder can be atomised or reduced; gas, melt temperature and cooling affect sphericity, satellites and internal pores. Sieving removes obvious size tails but cannot fix oxygen content or hollow particles.
Battery precursor synthesis controls metal molar ratio, feed, alkali and complexant, temperature and residence. End-only sampling misses nucleation and growth drift, and different points in one lot can have different size distributions.
Powder release combines main composition, trace impurities, size distribution, tap density, surface area, morphology and moisture. Data state sampling, dispersion and instrument method because preparation can change the apparent size result.
07 · Analytical results depend on sampling and method
Trace-data credibility starts with blanks, standards and duplicates.
In high-purity metals and battery materials, tools, acids, containers and dust can alter trace results. The laboratory distinguishes field, prepared and analytical samples and uses blanks, spikes and reference materials to check contamination and recovery.
Instrument readings stay within calibration; out-of-range samples are diluted or remade by an approved method. A final number alone loses reviewability, so spectra, weights, dilutions and quality controls remain with sample identity.
Customer, national, industry and company methods can differ in dissolution and measurement. Buyer and supplier agree method, significant figures and retest rules before a dispute so method differences do not become unexplained element gaps.
08 · Packaging carries chemical purity to the customer
Metal plates, crystals, powders and foil rolls need different protection.
Cathode metal is secured by bundle or pallet against secondary contamination, while salts and powders control liner cleanliness, seal, moisture and foreign matter. Packaging lots are traceable; a torn or wet inner pack is not released by replacing only the outer box.
Copper foil rolls protect faces, core and surface because impact or tipping causes dents, telescoping and edge damage. Box orientation, restraints and humidity indicators map to roll identity so opening anomalies can be traced to transport.
Delivery documents state producing entity, grade, lot, net mass, methods, results and approved deviations. A group brand describes provenance but does not replace subsidiary, line and lot; a new customer use also requires renewed suitability review.
