Guazhou Melon Processing
Guazhou melon production covers five towns and 28 villages, with protected-product requirements including fruit weight of 2.5–4 kilograms and soluble solids of at least 18 percent. Plot lot and harvest date should remain attached as melons move into gift cartons or export packs.
Formation and regional foundations
Oasis irrigation and desert sunshine shape ripening, followed quickly by shade, sorting and packing after harvest. Fresh-market and export routes may use different specifications, but sweetness samples, net weight and quarantine papers must still connect to a particular carton lot.
Guazhou melon evidence begins with checkable conditions rather than promotion: protected area, fruit weight and soluble solids. A Ministry announcement defines five towns and 28 villages; a national intellectual-property document sets 2.5–4 kilograms and at least 18 percent; an authorised-user notice and a Gansu trade report identify three entities. Linking field, grader, carton and one shipment brings the county brand down to actual fruit.

01 · County and protected-area boundaries
Five towns and 28 villages define the protected geography.
The annex to Ministry of Agriculture Announcement 1635 defines the Guazhou melon area as five towns and 28 administrative villages, while the 2025 national protection requirements retain Guazhou melon as the exact product name. County industry reports may describe broader planting and sales, but geographical-indication assessment requires both origin within the defined area and conformity with the product rules. A neighbouring origin or county name used in promotion cannot replace the administrative boundary in the announcement.
Village count is a geographic list, not a field count, and it does not make area or output equal among villages. Other farmland in Guazhou does not enter by county name alone, while idle land inside the area is not planted area. Shipping from Guazhou is not enough to establish origin. Reading Guazhou as any plot in the county would weaken origin checks and could place melons from outside the protected area under one label.
An origin file first copies towns and villages from the announcement, then obtains village, plot, variety and harvest date from the supplier. Coordinates assist arrival but do not replace field records. Mixed-village loads are weighed and sampled separately, with packing lots stating proportions. Before purchase, place village and plot code in a contract appendix, then connect the packing lot to the grader and actual shipper.
- The protected area is a geographic list.
- Twenty-eight villages are not 28 fields.
- Mixed cartons retain plot proportions.
02 · Area and quality measures
Single-fruit weight is 2.5–4 kg and soluble solids at least 18 percent.
National protection requirements set Guazhou melon weight at 2.5–4 kilograms and minimum soluble solids at 18 percent, two conditions applied directly to the fruit. The Ministry announcement lists five towns and 28 villages to define the protected geography. Weight and sweetness cannot be combined with town and village counts as one score: the first pair is tested by lot, while the latter determines whether the origin lies within the protected area.
The fruit-weight range applies to individual melons and does not require each carton average to equal its midpoint; the soluble-solids threshold is interpreted through the prescribed sampling method. Correct weight does not cure low sweetness, and sufficient sweetness does not excuse fruit outside the size specification. Sampling must also cover different cartons and packing positions, because display fruit or a few sweeter examples cannot represent the lot.
Inspection numbers each sampled melon and records cultivar, harvest date, appearance and carton before weighing it and measuring soluble solids under the sampling plan. The meter is calibrated before work, and cut position, reading, test time and packing lot are retained so the same lot can be reassessed. Any contractual diameter, fruit-count or net-weight requirement receives a separate result and does not rewrite the original geographical-indication criteria.
- Weight uses a range, not one point.
- Eighteen percent is the soluble-solids minimum.
- Geography and physical measures are judged separately.
03 · Oasis soils and irrigation
Oasis irrigation, maturity and harvest timing jointly affect sweetness.
Gansu industry reporting places Guazhou melon within oasis agriculture and rural incomes, while national protection requirements provide testable product conditions. Public information shows why sunlight, water, nutrition and maturity matter but does not publish irrigation dates, water volumes or harvest decisions for every field. Procurement still needs current-season plot records linking irrigation, weather and harvest lot with sweetness and firmness on arrival.
Irrigation near harvest can affect flavour and shipping life, while early picking can reduce sweetness; maturity signs also differ by variety — Skin colour alone is influenced by sunlight and cultivar. Field decisions need the same lot link to later sweetness, firmness and damage. Neighbouring plots of one variety can differ in sweetness and firmness because irrigation, harvest date and field temperature are not identical.
Field sampling covers different rows and records plot, cultivar, planting and harvest dates, recent irrigation and weather, with each sample labelled for harvest time and destination. Harvest shifts use separate codes, while dropped fruit and fruit left in direct sun are isolated. If retesting at the grader shows a marked difference in sweetness or weight, waiting time, shade and sample position are checked before the sample is widened.
- Pre-harvest irrigation affects fruit condition.
- Skin colour alone cannot judge maturity.
- Field and grader retest the same lot.
04 · Post-harvest grading and packing
Grading connects weight, appearance, sweetness and pack specification to each carton.
Protection rules specify individual fruit weight and sweetness, while grading also applies contractual requirements for appearance, maturity, fruit count and pack grade. Equipment speed or the number of grading tables describes operating conditions but cannot replace sample results. Each carton code should connect source plot, grading shift and packing specification, allowing net weight, fruit count and test data to return to one lot rather than placing different grades under one label.
Handling damage, cracks, shape defects and uneven maturity can worsen in transit, so sweetness conformity does not guarantee appearance or storage life. Packing to an average weight can conceal individual fruit outside the range, and checking only the top layer misses variation below. Random checks should cover upper, middle and lower layers and record the destination of rejects, while bruising from loose or tight packing needs assessment in a representative transport trial.
The grading line records intake lot, grade, rejection reason, packing lot and shift. At a fixed carton interval, one carton is rechecked for individual and net weight, with random sweetness sampling. Reworked cartons retain the original lot and reason rather than losing the first result under a new label. At grading, sample cartons from the beginning, middle and end, checking count, net weight, padding and code while retaining a reassessment set, and the retained set stays sealed through the agreed acceptance.
- Sweetness conformity does not prove appearance.
- Carton sampling covers upper and lower layers.
- Reworked cartons retain the first lot code.
05 · Geographical indication and mark use
Protection requirements govern goods; the mark list governs named operators.
A Gansu notice on authorised use of the special mark lists Gansu State Farms Xiaowan Farm Company Limited and Guazhou Lvzhou Ecological Farming Cooperative, while the national protection document sets Guazhou melon’s area and product conditions. The first confirms named entities on the notice date; the second defines what fruit may use the protected name. Feitian Cooperative appears in a Gansu trade report about brands and exports, which shows commercial activity but does not place it in the same authorisation notice.
Authorised use of the special mark covers only Guazhou melons within the stated scope; it does not extend to every crop or livestock activity of the operator. The word melon in a cooperative name is not a substitute for valid mark status. A package check therefore confirms both the entity’s full name and notice status and the current lot’s plot evidence and quality test before reaching a mark-use conclusion.
Package review first matches the producer or operator’s full name character by character to the authorisation material, then connects village, plot code, harvest date, packing lot, fruit weight and sweetness sample. When the underlying notice is old, current special-mark status needs a separate check. If any link fails, geographical-indication acceptance pauses rather than using a shop name, brand abbreviation or verbal explanation to fill the identity gap.
- The list and protection rules have distinct roles.
- A cooperative name does not replace current status.
- Mark use needs both goods and entity.
06 · Cold-chain sales and timing
The first 13-tonne export is one shipment, not annual volume.
A 2025 account of the first Guazhou melon export to the United Arab Emirates records one 13-tonne shipment, confirming the route and destination at that time. A 2026 Gansu trade report later names Feitian Cooperative and its speciality produce, showing entity activity at another date. Neither provides annual frequency, sustained supply volume or repeat orders, so a later export plan still depends on current freight space, quarantine and records from consecutive shipments.
Long-distance melon transport begins with harvest maturity and pre-cooling, then depends on package ventilation, stacking, transfers and arrival time. One successful shipment does not mean the next will face the same weather, freight space or destination quarantine. The reported 13 tonnes gives only the lot’s total weight; cartons or fruit count cannot be inferred without packing specification, net weight and piece count. Quarantine documents and acceptable arrival windows also need confirmation for each destination market.
A route review obtains the previous shipment’s contract specification, packing list, phytosanitary document, temperature or ventilation arrangement and receipt result. The new trial contract then defines temperature band, route, ventilation and latest receipt and measures harvest-to-stuffing time. Sweetness, net weight, cracking and bruising are checked on arrival, and seasonal planning begins only after several shipments of one specification remain stable.
- Thirteen tonnes remains one-shipment scope.
- A first export does not prove continuity.
- Season planning follows several matching shipments.
07 · Farm and cooperative identities
Xiaowan, Lvzhou and Feitian names come from two public source types.
Xiaowan Farm is a limited company, while Lvzhou and Feitian are farmers’ cooperatives; those legal forms create different responsibilities for contracting, payment and aggregation of members’ produce. Public material does not show that the three share plots, grading lines or sales accounts, and a common county brand does not establish ownership links. A buyer should verify the proposed contracting entity’s credit code, operating address and source of the current melon lot, with a written explanation connecting contract, invoice, payee and package label.
A farm company and a farmers’ cooperative use different legal forms and do not become one operator because their names resemble one another or both handle melons. Appearing together does not create common plots, packing lines, orders or ownership. An address, current product or contact not confirmed by reliable material should be checked with the legal entity rather than assembled from online shops, same-name accounts or another company’s details.
Each of the three entities should be contacted under its full Chinese name, with unified social credit code, operating address and signing authority checked separately. The enquiry states cultivar, weight range, sweetness, packing, quantity, availability and delivery point and asks for a representative sample and written specification. If contracting entity, payee and package producer differ, payment waits for a complete explanation of their relationship and responsibilities.
- All three identities use full legal names.
- Farm company and cooperative have different forms.
- Package-producer relationships are resolved before payment.
08 · Melon inspection and delivery
From plot to receipt, weight and sweetness follow the packing lot.
Protection documents, entity notices and export reporting can establish geography, quality conditions, operating identity and one route event, but they cannot accept a particular carton on arrival. The transaction is held together by plot and packing-lot identity, which connects village, cultivar, harvest date, grading result, package and transport. If any link breaks, a sweetness or weight result may not belong to the goods received and neither origin nor responsibility can be traced confidently.
Marketing names, county honours and a first export cannot supply physical data. Procurement focuses on origin, fruit weight, sweetness, appearance, packing and arrival condition. Each finding needs records for the current goods — a neighbouring plot, earlier truck or display sample is reference only. Without continuous plot, grading and logistics codes, passing sweetness and weight results may still concern different cartons.
Before ordering, confirm the plot and operating entity and seal a representative sample. Packing records should retain fruit count, net weight, lot and grading result, while dispatch keeps quarantine documents and route. At receipt, recheck fruit weight, sweetness and damage and use the carton code to trace packing date, plot and responsible entity, allowing a variance to be assigned to field, grading, packing or logistics. Only after one traceable loop is complete should its result guide later purchases from the same plot and specification.
- The plot lot is the chain spine.
- Display fruit is reference only.
- Closed results apply to matching later lots.
