Foshan Nanhai hydrogen energy
Nanhai places gas supply, hydrogen production and purification, compression and transport, refuelling stations, fuel-cell materials, stacks, systems and transport demonstrations within a close industrial setting, with extensions into ammonia-hydrogen industrial firing and methanol-reforming power. Zero carbon at a vehicle tailpipe does not make the hydrogen pathway carbon-free. Procurement must state source, purity, pressure class, delivery method, stack duty and end load together. Efficiency and failure analysis remain weak unless station, system and vehicle timelines align.
Formation and regional foundations
Nanhai first created recurring demand through buses and a commercial refuelling station, then assembled stack, system, compressor, catalyst, gas and testing firms around Xianhu Hydrogen Valley while Xianhu Laboratory developed materials, production, testing and technology transfer. Later work added biogas-to-hydrogen, 70 MPa dispensing and ammonia-hydrogen demonstrations. Early applications yield engineering data, but subsidised vehicle counts, planned investment and factory capacity are not interchangeable.
Fast filling of a vehicle tank produces heat through compression and flow. Station precooling, cascade storage, ambient temperature, initial tank pressure and communication all shape the fill. If hydrogen delivery later falls short, valves, regulation, recirculation or stack water management may be responsible. Nanhai spans gas, refuelling, fuel cells and operation, yet diagnosis becomes reliable only when hydrogen lot, station event, tank identity, system log and cell voltages share one timeline.
Core geography: A production-storage-transport-use network anchored by R&D and equipment in Danzao Xianhu Hydrogen Valley, extending to gas supply in Lishui, district refuelling stations, fuel-cell systems, vehicle operations and ammonia-hydrogen industrial demonstrations
Quality, pressure and data path for one kilogram of hydrogen
How responsibility travels from feed and electricity to vehicles and stationary power
Nodes mark where hydrogen or energy changes state; links carry certificates, pressure and time records and do not imply that one firm covers the full chain.
- Electricity, feed and hydrogen carrier — Electrolysis, by-product gas, biogas, methanol or ammonia bring different carbon and impurity boundaries.
- Production and purification — Reforming, adsorption, drying or electrolysis is followed by composition, moisture and trace-impurity checks.
- Compression, storage and transport — Compressors, storage banks, tube trailers and valves maintain pressure boundaries and lot separation.
- Station quality and safety gate — Unloading, cascade, precooling, metering, communication and emergency shutdown make one fill.
- Membrane electrode, stack and test — Cell consistency, sealing, plate channels and conditioning data enter factory release.
- Fuel, air and thermal system — Regulation, recirculation, compressor, humidification, cooling and controls connect stack to load.
- Vehicle, vessel and stationary power — Route, load, environment, energy use, alarms and maintenance form operating feedback.
01 · Ask where hydrogen comes from before claiming low carbon
The same vehicle has different pathway emissions with different hydrogen sources.
Nanhai pathways include industrial-gas supply, water-electrolysis research, biogas-to-hydrogen, methanol reforming and ammonia-hydrogen industrial demonstrations. Provincial action treats production, transport, refuelling and use as one chain, showing that “hydrogen energy” is not one production route.
A fuel cell can operate without emitting carbon dioxide, while upstream electricity, natural gas, by-product purification, methanol or ammonia manufacture carry different emissions. A boundary from nozzle to wheel cannot compare sources or expose transport and compression energy.
When procuring hydrogen or systems, require production location, feed and electricity source, conversion efficiency, compression and transport method, accounting period and emission factors. List unknowns separately rather than hiding them under a green label.
- Hydrogen is a secondary energy carrier.
- Tailpipe cannot represent pathway carbon.
- Unknown data must remain explicit.
02 · Purity should be an impurity list, not one percentage
Trace carbon monoxide, sulphur, water and ammonia affect stacks and valves differently.
Huate Gas operates industrial and specialty gases in Nanhai, Xianhu Laboratory studies hydrogen production and materials, and local projects include biogas, methanol and ammonia. Multiple sources increase options while widening variation in crude-gas composition and purification duty.
Two hydrogen lots with the same headline purity may have very different trace profiles. Carbon monoxide occupies catalyst sites, sulphur can cause stubborn poisoning, water affects cold conditions and metering, and residual ammonia is critical after ammonia cracking. Hydrogen content alone cannot establish fitness for use.
The certificate should state sampling point, detection limit, hydrogen, water, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and sulphur species, adding ammonia where the route requires it. Station receipt sampling should use the same lot identity as the source report.
- Headline purity can hide critical impurities.
- Detection limit belongs with the result.
- Source and station share the lot identity.
03 · A pressure class carries a complete storage and refuelling boundary
Thirty-five and seventy MPa are not one machine with a higher setting.
Public Nanhai cases include roughly 600 kg of storage and at least 350 kg per day at Ruihui, as well as a station serving both 35 MPa and 70 MPa. Provincial policy also assigns pressure-vessel, fire and filling-permit oversight for stations.
Pressure class changes storage, couplings, nozzle protocol, precooling and fill algorithm. Daily capacity also depends on delivery pressure, compressor availability, cascade size, vehicle arrival pattern and ambient temperature; storage mass cannot be directly converted into continuous service.
Station assessment should use at least a week of fill-by-fill data covering initial and final pressure, temperature, mass, duration, precooling, alarms, tank identity and interruption cause. A dual-pressure station should report queues and equipment occupancy separately for each class.
- Pressure class changes the interface system.
- Storage is not daily service capacity.
- Dual-pressure data needs separate reporting.
04 · The stack challenge is whether every cell works together
Total power can pass while the weakest cell fails early.
Nanhai includes membrane electrodes, stacks, systems, catalysts and testing; CleanEst publicly supplies stacks and engine systems, while Xianhu Laboratory works on materials and testing. Chain completeness aids joint debugging but does not automatically deliver batch consistency.
Membrane thickness, catalyst loading, gas-diffusion compression, plate channels, seal thickness and clamping force all create cell variation. Stack voltage averages away local starvation, flooding, membrane drying or contact resistance.
Factory release should retain membrane-electrode, plate and seal lots, assembly torque and conditioning programme, and deliver cell-voltage distribution, pressure drop, leak test, polarisation curve and steady data at specified power. Durability reporting should include the minimum cell.
- Total voltage hides cell dispersion.
- Assembly parameters belong to the manufacturing lot.
- Durability reporting needs the weakest cell.
05 · Compressor, recirculation and cooling jointly determine system efficiency
Rated stack power is not the sustained net power of a vehicle or station.
CleanEst publicly targets buses, logistics vehicles, forklifts, rail, vessels and stationary power, spanning very different power and cooling conditions. Provincial policy likewise separates transport, emergency power, storage and marine uses.
The air compressor, hydrogen recirculation, coolant pumps, fans, heaters and controls all consume power. Auxiliary share may rise at low load, while heat rejection limits a hot uphill duty. The same stack will not retain one net efficiency across platforms.
System tests should separate gross stack power, accessory load and net terminal power, covering cold start, steady state, load steps, maximum ambient and fault derating. Software revision, sensor calibration and coolant condition should be frozen with the report.
- Accessory power needs separate metering.
- Platform changes net efficiency.
- Software and calibration freeze with the test.
06 · Demonstration value lies in trip data, not vehicle count
Route, load, driver, weather and station availability all change energy use.
The Guangdong transport case combines vehicle deployment, station network and a transport-community operating mechanism, while Nanhai has used buses, logistics, two-wheelers and vessels. The mechanism coordinates procurement and operation but cannot replace duty data.
Average hydrogen per 100 km is not comparable without payload, speed, grade, climate control, ambient temperature and idle time. Queues or station faults may force detours, indirectly raising energy use and downtime.
Operating records should retain departure time, payload, distance, hydrogen, station, waiting, alarms, minimum cell voltage and maintenance by vehicle and route. Monthly reporting needs the distribution, worst trips and downtime causes alongside the mean.
- Vehicle count is not durability data.
- Energy comparison needs controlled route conditions.
- Monthly reports retain the worst trips.
07 · Ammonia and methanol expand logistics and add conversion boundaries
A convenient liquid carrier does not remove purification or emissions at the point of use.
Nanhai has made ammonia-hydrogen equipment a new direction with a ceramic-kiln demonstration, while Zhongke Jiahong develops high-temperature methanol fuel cells in Xianhu Hydrogen Valley. Both connect ambient-temperature liquid logistics with energy conversion at use.
Ammonia cracking needs heat and purification, with residual ammonia and nitrogen affecting downstream use; direct firing must control nitrogen oxides. Methanol reforming produces carbon dioxide and is sensitive to carbon-monoxide management. Equating convenient carriers with carbon-free or high-purity hydrogen omits critical operations.
Route comparison should place carrier production, transport, cracking or reforming, purification, exhaust, recoverable heat and end efficiency in one functional unit. A pilot should measure residual ammonia, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and actual fuel use rather than only show ignition or generation.
- Carrier routes add conversion steps.
- Residual ammonia and carbon monoxide need measurement.
- Comparison uses one functional unit.
08 · Company assessment must resolve to gas, stack and conversion roles
A complete local chain does not mean one firm supplies an end-to-end system.
Huate Gas provides industrial and specialty gases and related service, CleanEst manufactures fuel-cell stacks and power systems, and Zhongke Jiahong makes methanol-reforming high-temperature fuel cells. All sit within the Nanhai chain but carry responsibility for gas, proton-exchange-membrane systems and liquid-carrier conversion respectively.
Company size, listing status, research pedigree or a demonstration does not replace licences, specifications and operating records for the target product. Gas supply requires source and impurity evidence, stacks require cell and durability evidence, and carrier systems require conversion-efficiency and exhaust evidence.
A shortlist should first verify current legal entity, production address, ownership and exact product, then obtain representative lots, customer duties and deviation handling from the latest 12 months. Joint testing should bind gas certificate, station log, system software and route identity so responsibility does not vanish at interfaces.
- Company role follows the delivery boundary.
- Status cannot replace product evidence.
- Joint testing binds interface data.
Sources and reading notes
The unit of examination is a hydrogen duty with an identified source, quality certificate and end use. Fix production route, accounting boundary, purity, delivery state, pressure class, transport and load, then trace purification, compression, storage, dispensing, onboard supply, stack and maintenance data. Demonstration vehicles and announced investment are not sustained capacity.
- A 2025 transport case counted 150 firms and more than RMB 60 billion of investment for Xianhu Hydrogen Valley.
- Public information for Ruihui station records about 600 kg of storage and daily dispensing of at least 350 kg.
- Nanhai has a station supporting both 35 MPa and 70 MPa; vehicle interfaces and procedures for the two classes are not interchangeable.
- Xianhu Laboratory publicly covers water electrolysis, fuel-cell materials, vehicle power and test analysis.

- Foshan CleanEst Energy Technology Co., Ltd. — CleanEst turns stacks and power systems into products for several transport and stationary applications, representing Nanhai system integration beyond components. Procurement should separately verify gross stack power, accessory consumption, cell consistency, cooling limits, software revision and durability on the intended route.
- Guangdong Huate Gas Co., Ltd. — Huate contributes gas production, purification, analysis, packaging and supply management rather than complete fuel-cell systems. A fuel-cell project should check source, trace impurities, dew point, cylinder or trailer identity, station sampling and abnormal-lot isolation, rather than treat broad specialty-gas capability as vehicle-hydrogen quality.
- Zhongke Jiahong (Foshan) New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. — Zhongke Jiahong combines liquid-methanol logistics with onsite reforming, membrane electrodes and high-temperature stacks for power applications that avoid high-pressure hydrogen logistics. Evaluation should put methanol source, reformer efficiency, carbon-monoxide control, carbon-dioxide emissions, start time and load following in one test; convenient storage is not zero emission.
