Dongying District oil-drilling equipment
Dongying drilling equipment begins with the well: temperature, pressure, deviation, medium and operation determine material, seals, tubulars and control. A trade show or cluster scale does not establish fitness for sour, HPHT or offshore service; heat lot, threads, NDE and pressure tests follow serial identity.
Formation and regional foundations
Around Shengli Oilfield, manufacturing, repair and services developed over time, with Kerui, Highland and Qilong spanning surface packages, pumping equipment or offshore tubular products. Energy-agency material establishes platforms and system breadth, while oil output, service qualification and manufacturing location remain separate; refining and all Dongying marine equipment stay outside.
Once downhole, a tool faces pressure, temperature, tension, compression, bending, corrosion and erosion, any of which can defeat a seal or thread. Selection begins with well architecture, medium and programme rather than a show catalogue, and recovered damage enters the next decision.

Dongying well-condition and serial path
Which downhole risk the factory test actually covers
The well sheet sends constraints to material and structure; serial identity carries factory results to site and back into return inspection.
- Well condition and programme — Depth, temperature, pressure, medium, well geometry and procedure define the combined duty before material is selected.
- Material heat and treatment — Heat chemistry, forging flow and treatment establish the pressure part’s margin in sour or cyclic service.
- Thread, seal and assembly — Thread form, sealing face, make-up torque and assembly cleanliness create a removable pressure connection.
- NDE and pressure test — Magnetic, ultrasonic or penetrant methods face different flaw directions, while pressure cycling tests the assembled boundary.
- Wellsite installation and load — Lifting, alignment, piping restraint and field load redistribute forces at the wellhead or surface equipment.
- Return inspection and life decision — Wear, corrosion, cracking and dimensional change after retrieval determine repair, downgrade or retirement.
01 · The well sheet selects before the catalogue
Temperature, pressure, deviation and medium bound the tool.
Selection of Dongying drilling equipment begins with the well, not the product catalogue. Depth, hole size, deviation, temperature, pressure, medium and operating objective together define the load environment, and any unknown can alter material, sealing or interfaces. A pressure rating without its temperature class and loading mode is incomplete. Likewise, a tool that succeeded in a nearby well may not retain adequate margin under a different dogleg severity or sour concentration.
Reusing a familiar well configuration most often misses a local hot zone, bending load or change in chemistry. A surface pressure test can show that a body did not leak at one temperature, but it does not automatically cover alternating tension and compression, erosion and corrosion downhole. Treating missing conditions as normal pushes uncertainty to the wellsite, where an incompatible interface, unsuitable seal compound or restricted outside diameter may interrupt the operation. One successful run cannot erase those differences.
Before design review, a well sheet states the confirmed temperature, pressure, hole geometry, deviation, medium and operating sequence, while making every remaining unknown and conservative assumption conspicuous. Candidate equipment is matched item by item to material class, connection, envelope and prohibited conditions rather than compared by name and rating alone. When the well data change, affected selections are reviewed again instead of carrying an old decision forward. The final run list identifies the interval and conditions allowed for each item so that site crews know when use must stop.
- Missing well data pushes risk to site.
02 · Heat chemistry is the first barrier in sour service
Beyond strength, toughness, hardness and cracking resistance matter.
For a pressure component entering sour service, steel grade is only the beginning of the material decision. Melting cleanliness, heat chemistry, sample position, heat treatment and final hardness together determine strength, toughness and resistance to cracking. A specimen from one end of the stock does not automatically represent a thick finished section, and local hardness after treatment may differ from the incoming certificate. The heat number must therefore travel from stock to the valve body, connector or tool body so the actual part can be matched to its material condition.
Mixed stock can leave visually identical parts with different cracking resistance, and an over-hard zone is particularly hazardous in wet hydrogen sulphide. Simply reducing hardness, however, may sacrifice required strength. If a serial number reaches only the assembly lot and not the heat, a later crack cannot be separated into metallurgical defect, treatment variation or service overload. Experience in an ordinary sweet well does not replace assessment for severe sour duty because the medium sends the same stress into a different failure mechanism.
At cutting, heat identity is transferred to each unit and checked both when parts enter and leave heat treatment. Hardness, and where needed strength and toughness, are confirmed at representative section positions. Parts from one heat but different furnace locations are compared by thermal history so an average report does not hide an edge position. Any material deviation is resolved against the affected serial numbers. When steel grade, treatment cycle or sampling plan changes, the earlier sour-service conclusion does not continue automatically. The new condition receives its own compatibility assessment.
- Material evidence must reach the actual part.
03 · A threaded joint must seal, carry load and permit handling
Form, taper, surface and makeup torque interact.
A tubular thread must transmit tension, compression and torque, preserve a seal through pressure cycling, and survive repeated wellsite handling. Form, lead, taper and standoff govern geometric fit, while seal-face finish, surface treatment and makeup lubricant affect contact. Passing the gauges shows that specified dimensions are within range. It does not replace inspection for dents, tool marks or damage to the sealing shoulder. The connection result remains tied to the tubular identity and exact thread form.
Minor end damage may be inconspicuous during transport yet become cross-threading or a local stress concentration during makeup. Excess torque can damage the seal face and leave a fatigue origin. Connections with different shoulder designs and lubricant factors cannot share one torque window without making one too tight and another too loose. A final torque value without the turn response and end condition gives little help in separating machining geometry, field handling and contamination after a leak.
After machining, thread form, lead, taper and seal face are inspected by unit. Accepted ends are cleaned and protected until immediately before field makeup. The specified compound and calibrated tools are used on site, with torque versus turn observed. Abnormal resistance is not overcome by simply applying more force. Leakage results after pressure cycling are interpreted with the makeup trace and serial identity. A change in connection design, finish or lubricant calls for a new assembly window rather than inherited settings.
- Gauge acceptance still needs seal-surface integrity.
04 · Pressure cycling reveals seal defects better than static pressure
Temperature and medium alter elastomer and metal contact.
Downhole sealing depends jointly on elastomer or metal selection, mating-surface finish, compression, assembly lubricant and compatibility with the medium. A static pressure hold observes one temperature and one moment, whereas service moves through heating, pressurisation, shut-in and restart. Across those cycles, a seal may swell, shrink or take a permanent set, and fine particles can scratch the contact face during movement. Pressure, temperature, cycle count and leakage are therefore recorded as a sequence.
A seal that passes cold water pressure may soften, extrude or change volume in hot hydrocarbon service and form a leak path. Metal seals can also be affected by differential thermal growth and scratches. One long static hold is not necessarily harsher than repeated starts and stops, because a flaw may open gradually during unloading and reloading. Treating water as a substitute for every medium overlooks swelling, corrosion and lubrication, turning a factory pass into an unjustified claim of fitness for all downhole conditions.
The test combination approaches the target medium’s compatibility conditions. Seal lot, assembly dimensions and contact faces are recorded before temperature and pressure are raised and lowered through the specified sequence, with leakage observed at every stage. After cycling, disassembly examines extrusion, wear, permanent set and particle damage against the serial identity. A medium, maximum temperature or pressure range outside the original envelope requires material selection and cycling to be repeated, confirming function through startup, steady operation and shut-in.
- A static hold answers one moment only.
05 · Pumping load repeats through rod string and surface unit
Stroke, speed and well fluid change peak loads.
A pumping unit, rod string and downhole pump form a reciprocating system. Well depth, pump diameter, stroke, speed, fluid column and inertia jointly create polished-rod load. The rating plate on the surface unit does not describe every cycle. A dynamometer card shows the differences between upstroke, downstroke and pump fill. Gearbox torque, structural strain and vibration need the same timeline to indicate whether balance is appropriate and whether an anomaly begins at the surface drive or downhole.
Insufficient counterbalance overloads the motor and gearbox in one direction, while excessive balance transfers the problem to the other half of the cycle. Pump sticking, gas interference or a changing fluid level can abruptly reshape the load and introduce impact and fatigue into the rod string. Comparing one peak with a rating can miss a repeated local stress. Remaining below rated load also does not guarantee adequate life at every location because cycle count and load direction matter.
Field commissioning captures dynamometer cards over complete strokes while recording current, gearbox torque and vibration at critical structural points. Counterweight and stroke rate are adjusted from pump fill and upstroke-downstroke loading, with a new acquisition after every change rather than relying on current alone. An abnormal card leads to the well fluid, rod string and downhole pump before a surface repair is chosen. The final condition coordinates surface drive and downhole load across sustained cycles and retains room for later well changes.
- Balance and fatigue need a load spectrum.
06 · NDE must face defect direction and part geometry
One method cannot find every crack, lamination or volumetric flaw.
Critical pressure parts may contain forging laps, weld lack of fusion, internal inclusions or machining cracks. Defect location and orientation determine which nondestructive method is most sensitive. Ultrasonics respond to internal reflectors in suitable directions, magnetic particles and penetrant address surface-breaking flaws, and radiography shows volumetric change through particular thicknesses and projections. A report establishes actual coverage only when method, sensitivity, scan direction and examined zones are stated.
Corners, thread roots and thickness transitions are often the least accessible places and also likely stress concentrations. If the probe covers only convenient flat surfaces, a report stating that no flaw was found can still leave important blind zones. One method cannot cover both fine surface cracks and deep volumetric flaws, while excessive sensitivity can create irrelevant indications. Extending a pass to unexamined regions allows the real risk to emerge only after pressure cycling.
The procedure begins by listing plausible flaw types and orientations, then combines ultrasonic, magnetic, penetrant or radiographic methods with practical paths into corners and roots. Reference blocks, probe direction, coverage and indication location stay with the part identity. Reportable indications are located, confirmed and given a defined disposition, with repaired zones inspected again. A change in geometry or manufacturing route prompts a new coverage assessment because the old scan plan may no longer reveal the same flaws.
- Inspection coverage belongs in the procedure.
07 · Wellsite installation redefines loads on factory-passed equipment
Lifting, alignment, makeup and piping stress enter the system.
After drilling equipment passes factory tests, the wellsite foundation, lifting, piping, interfaces and control interlocks redefine system loads. Forced fit-up on a skid can transmit pipe load into a pump casing or seal, and improper lifting points may permanently distort the structure. Startup sequence also controls valve position, pressure and lubrication. Alignment, fastening torque, pipe supports, alarms and interlocks therefore receive one integrated site check.
Drawing misaligned flanges together with bolts appears to solve installation but preloads the casing and bearings in bending. A wrong startup sequence can pressurise equipment before lubrication or cooling is established. Factory pressure testing contains none of these site deviations, and a passing unit cannot prove the piping and control logic around it. Temporarily bypassing an alarm to save time removes the earliest protection and makes later vibration or leakage harder to trace.
Installation follows interface drawings for foundation level, flange position and lifting points. Alignment is measured after piping falls naturally into place, confirming that the equipment carries no unintended pull. Before startup, valve positions, lubrication, cooling, pressure relief and emergency shutdown interlocks are proven one by one, followed by controlled increases in speed or pressure. Deviations are resolved before the trial rather than hidden by extra tightening or disabled alarms. Site integration is complete only when operation is stable without unintended external load.
- Installation error cannot be hidden by extra tightening.
08 · Returned tools need damage facts for their next life
A sound appearance can hide fatigue, corrosion and dimensional loss.
The remaining condition of a returned tool is formed by its actual well, cycle count, tension-compression history, erosion, corrosion and previous repairs. A sound appearance does not establish intact wall thickness, thread roots or seal faces, and a serial number is useful only when connected to service history. Dimensions, wall thickness, flaw indications and wear found after recovery need the depth, medium and abnormal events beside them before reuse, repair or retirement can be decided.
An unrecorded overload, sticking event or acid exposure can send an old unit downhole again with unknown risk. Visual examination after basic cleaning may miss bore erosion, fatigue cracks and dimensional loss, and a sound companion from the same lot cannot stand in for the current unit. Repeated dressing may improve appearance while reducing pressure-bearing section or changing seal geometry. Without explicit remaining-dimension thresholds, repair count begins to replace actual condition.
On return, the serial number and well run are confirmed before deposits are removed and threads, seals, bore and high-stress transitions are disassembled according to risk. Measurements are compared with original dimensions and prior repair history, while overload or corrosion triggers appropriate additional inspection. Each unit receives a clear decision for reuse, limited repair or retirement, including the conditions allowed for its next well. Broken identity, wall below threshold or a critical crack that cannot be removed reliably ends further service. Experience from the lot is not a substitute.
- Reuse, repair and retirement need explicit thresholds.
