Diqing Wine Industry
Wine grapes in Diqing are distributed across Shangri-La City, Deqin County and Weixi County. Public figures list 10,557.96 mu of vines and 4,584.02 tonnes of fresh grapes, with Deqin carrying the largest share. Vineyard area and grape output do not equal winery capacity or wine output.
Formation and regional foundations
High-altitude valleys, large day-night temperature shifts and scattered plots shape grape growing in Diqing. Local processors take fruit through crushing, fermentation, ageing and bottling. Wine exports earned RMB 10.299 million in 2025; export value, processor population and vineyard figures describe different parts of the industry.
Diqing’s wine landscape spans Shangri-La City, Deqin County and Weixi County, with nine named principal townships concentrated in Deqin and Weixi. Vine area, fresh fruit, processors and export earnings illuminate different parts of the sector. Shangri-La Winery, Moët Hennessy Shangri-La Winery and Lapu Valley Winery then bring the journey into three distinct estates.

Three County-level Areas, Nine Producing Townships and Wineries
The map separates administrative levels and industry functions; an actual wine route still depends on mountain roads, seasonal access and winery appointments.
- Diqing wine region — The prefecture links grape growing, processing, winery brands and annual exports.
- Shangri-La City vineyards — The city has separate vine and fruit figures but sits outside the nine-township principal list.
- Six producing townships in Deqin — Benzilan, Shengping, Yangla, Yanmen, Yunling and Foshan form Deqin’s principal grape geography.
- Three producing areas in Weixi — Baohe, Yongchun and Tacheng provide specific directions for Weixi grape origins.
- Nine-township grape distribution — The list locates production, while area, varieties and processing destinations need local enquiry.
- Diqing grape processors — In 2024 the prefecture counted 46 processors, including six food-production licence holders.
- Wine exports in 2025 — Wine-only export earnings reached RMB 10.299 million, separate from combined specialty-product trade.
01 · Vineyard Area and Output across Three County-level Areas
One prefectural account places Shangri-La, Deqin and Weixi under comparable vineyard and fresh-grape measures.
Diqing reported 10,557.96 mu of grape vines and 4,584.02 tonnes of fresh fruit. Shangri-La City, Deqin County and Weixi County each have separate area and output figures, with Deqin accounting for the larger share. These are dated prefecture and county agricultural measures, not finished-wine volume or vineyards assigned to a particular winery.
Area and fruit tonnage answer different questions and cannot be divided into a measure of wine quality or winery efficiency. Variety, vine age, elevation, season, crop thinning, sugar and harvest choices all affect yield and winemaking value. Mountain and valley terrain also separates the three county-level areas, so an administrative total does not describe one continuous estate.
At a vineyard, first establish the county, township, elevation, variety and harvest year, then ask which processor receives the fruit. The prefecture totals of 10,557.96 mu and 4,584.02 tonnes show overall scale; the visit should record the specific plot, current crop and destination. Keeping those levels apart prevents a regional figure from becoming a claim of winery-owned vineyards.
- Deqin’s larger share indicates cultivation concentration rather than winery ownership.
02 · Where the Nine Main Townships Are Located
Six Deqin townships and three Weixi townships form the explicitly named production geography.
Nine principal townships are named: Benzilan, Shengping, Yangla, Yanmen, Yunling and Foshan in Deqin, plus Baohe, Yongchun and Tacheng in Weixi. Shangri-La City has separately reported vineyard area and output but is absent from this township list. The three county-level areas and nine principal townships therefore describe different geographic levels.
The list gives a traveller more precise direction than the broad phrase Diqing wine, but it does not provide township variety mix, processing facilities, road conditions or company affiliation. The six Deqin and three Weixi townships may follow different harvest rhythms and delivery radii. Their appearance in one list does not establish shared purchasing, unified vinification or fixed transport routes.
Plan the producing-area route around valleys and real roads rather than drawing straight lines between administrative names. At each stop, ask about principal varieties, harvest month, grower type, fruit-delivery radius and any local processing, while checking seasonal access before departure. If a label says only Diqing, trace the origin to a county and township so the regional story reaches a locatable grape source.
- Shangri-La City has recorded area and output but is not in this nine-township list.
03 · What a Population of 46 Processors Means
The processor count indicates local winemaking density, not the size or licensed categories of each operator.
As of 2024, Diqing reported 46 grape-processing entities, six of them holding food-production licences. This is a prefecture aggregate: it does not name each licence holder, production address, food category or validity term, nor classify the remaining operators as wineries, cooperatives or other forms. The entity count therefore differs from a winery or production-line count.
Grape-processing entity is a wider category than licensed food producer, and the two should not be treated as synonyms. A licence normally belongs to a defined legal person, address, category and term. With the denominator incompletely classified, six out of 46 is not an industry compliance rate; a winery’s authority to produce still depends on its own licence and current operating status.
A processing-site visit can start with the legal name at the premises, followed by food category, licence term, production address, equipment activity and product labels. Then follow lot identity through grape intake, crushing, fermentation, ageing and bottling. The prefecture counts of 46 and six supply context but cannot answer licence or capacity questions for the plant in front of you.
- Company comparison turns on permissions, equipment, vintage and actual products.
04 · RMB 10.299 Million in Wine Export Earnings
The 2025 export earnings are an annual trade result measured differently from grape output.
Diqing recorded RMB 10.299 million in wine export earnings for 2025, an annual trade result stated specifically for wine. Other totals of RMB 44.93 million and RMB 70 million combine wine with products such as matsutake, medicinal materials and vegetables. Their baskets and reference years differ, so they cannot form one growth series with the wine-only figure.
Export earnings are not industrial value, domestic sales, profit or designed capacity, and they cannot be allocated by vineyard area or company count. A Diqing wine trade trend needs consecutive years, one currency, a stable product scope and unchanged geography. The RMB 10.299 million figure shows prefecture export magnitude in 2025 but not bottle count, average price or company share.
For a company export claim, record the declaring entity, commodity category, destination, period and currency, then match them to contracts or customs documents. Regional data can show that foreign trade exists, whereas an individual winery must explain its own products, volume, price and delivery route. Separate columns for the two prevent promotional scope from hiding operating differences.
- Export value does not reveal bottle count, price band or contribution by company.
05 · Separating Vineyard Work from Planning
Vineyard work, varietal adjustment and future targets belong to different implementation stages.
Annual implementation information records 887.71 mu of vineyard consolidation or upgrading in 2024 and 10,600 mu of construction or upgrading in 2025. The first is work completed in one year and the second belongs to another year’s implementation. Consolidation or upgrading may concern existing plots and does not automatically mean entirely new planting.
The two work volumes cannot simply be added into current vineyard area or converted into wine capacity. Fourteenth Five-Year directions for brands, geographical indications, a Deqin ecological grape park and processing research are industrial ambitions rather than a completion list. Later construction, acceptance, commissioning or annual results are needed to show how far each item progressed.
Track vineyard change by county and township, implementation year, existing plot, work performed, newly planted area and acceptance status. Breeding, purification, rejuvenation and green cultivation can become themes for later observation, followed by concrete field results. Wording such as advancing or supporting work should remain in progress rather than becoming premature output growth or company income.
- Planning direction shows industrial choice without becoming completed output.
06 · Where Brand and Quality Are Built
Regional identity reaches the bottle through grapes, vinification, ageing, bottling and market feedback.
Shangri-La Winery received a nomination for the Yunnan Provincial Government Quality Award; the word nomination cannot be shortened into the award itself. Brands and a wine geographical indication have appeared as development directions, while the prefecture also has green-food certification activity. A nomination, planning goal and product certification belong to separate systems and do not endorse every Diqing wine.
Regional reputation helps explain a high-altitude origin but does not establish the taste, vintage performance or price of a bottle. Product judgement returns to producer, ingredients, alcohol level, standard, lot and traceability. Green-food or geographical-indication marks also need the authorised entity, applicable product, number and term rather than an inference from abbreviated display text.
When comparing wines at a winery, note the complete designation, year and legal entity, then see whether bottle labels and certificates agree. If a tour uses broad phrases such as government quality award, geographical-indication region or green product, ask which qualification is meant. Separating honours, origin schemes and product tests makes the brand’s real strengths easier to see.
- A brand designation does not replace cuvée, vintage or test results.
07 · Three Wineries with Separate Identities
Each company has its own winery, products and public activity and should not be merged into one operator.
Shangri-La Winery Co., Ltd. is clearly associated with Diqing’s wine industry, but prefecture information does not list its current food-production licence, grape purchases, wine output or customers. The company offers an entry into brand and scaled winemaking. A visit still needs the production address, active wines and vintages, and the prefecture count of six licence holders cannot simply be assigned to it.
Moët Hennessy Shangri-La (Deqin) Winery Co., Ltd. appears in Diqing’s safety-production inspection plan and is also linked to the Deqin wine setting. A scheduled inspection does not mean that it has taken place or produced findings. The entry establishes the exact company identity and a regulatory timetable; current production, licensing and wines remain separate questions.
The Green Yunpin directory connects Diqing Shangri-La Lapu Valley Winery Co., Ltd. with Weixi County, the Zangyungu brand and the wine category, providing a clear link among entity, place, brand and product direction. Directory inclusion is not a food-production licence and says nothing about current output, sales or market share. A visit can further establish the winery address, available vintages and specific authorisations.
- A Diqing location does not imply shared vineyards, recipes or sales channels.
08 · How to Visit the Diqing Wine Industry
A visit can begin with vineyard elevation and variety, then move into winery process, vintage and route to market.
A sensible Diqing wine route begins with grape geography: choose a producing township in Deqin or Weixi, then enter a winery to understand fruit reception, crushing, fermentation, ageing and bottling before discussing brand and market. Prefecture area, annual vineyard work and export earnings each provide context but do not prove that three wineries share grapes or export together.
A highland producing region changes quickly, so time, geography, product and entity need to remain visible together. Fresh-fruit tonnes are not finished-wine volume, a planned park is not commissioned production, and a named company does not hold permanent licence or operating status. The regional story becomes comparable when an explanation can answer which year, township, legal entity and wine.
Before visiting, divide questions into four columns. Ask vineyards about county, variety and harvest year; processors about legal entity, licence and activity that day; products about label, standard, lot and certification term; markets about declaring entity and period. Compare the answers with prefecture area, grape output, 46 processors and RMB 10.299 million in exports without allocating aggregate figures to an individual winery.
- The most useful questions concern fruit origin, harvest, fermentation, ageing and delivery.
