Danyang eyewear and ophthalmic lenses

Danyang’s consumer optics industry runs from resin materials, lens blanks, coating and frames to refraction, assembly, wholesale, retail and e-commerce. Conventional and functional lenses and spectacles are major consumer products. Contact lenses are regulated as medical devices and follow different production and sales requirements.

Formation and regional foundations

Long-term lens production built capability in tooling, optical processing and coating. Situ Town and the development zone became manufacturing nodes, while Danyang Eyewear City linked fitting with nationwide channels. Testing, standards, e-commerce and parcel services shortened the route from small batches to consumers.

Danyang produces more than 400 million pairs of lenses a year and has over 1,600 firms in the visual-intelligence chain, employing more than 50,000 people. Beyond scale, wearer experience depends on continuity among prescription, optics, coating, assembly and after-sales care. Mingyue, Wanxin and Hydron represent lenses, optical manufacturing and medical-device routes.

01 · Why Lens Factories and Fitting Markets Sit Together

Manufacturing, wholesale and fitting form a mutually supportive but distinct network in Danyang.

Danyang’s advantage begins with processes that cannot be mastered overnight. Lens tooling, resin casting, curing, surfacing, coating and optical inspection reward accumulated skill, which in turn attracts frame makers, accessory suppliers and finishing services. In 2026, the Zhenjiang tax authority counted over 1,600 businesses along the chain, more than 50,000 workers and value above RMB 25 billion, indicating the depth of the local production and service network.

The cluster has clear spatial roles. Situ concentrates lenses, coating and contact-lens production. The development zone accommodates larger factories, R&D and automated lines. Danyang Eyewear City links lens and frame wholesale, fitting and national buyers. The national eyewear quality centre, spectacle-fitting standards subcommittee and provincial technical-service platform support testing and standards, while the e-commerce park and parcel network move orders to consumers.

Public data showing more than 400 million pairs of lenses a year and about 70% of national output establishes scale, but it does not give every shop or factory the same capability. A firm may make only blanks, stock lenses, surfaced prescription lenses, frames or finished spectacles, or may trade without production. Due diligence should verify legal entity, site, processes, instruments, customers and outsourcing so “Danyang eyewear” becomes a defined, testable product.

  • The chain’s value lies in coordination rather than every firm performing every stage.

02 · Lenses, Frames and Contact Lenses Are Different Products

Optical lenses, frames, finished spectacles and contacts use different materials and rules.

Ophthalmic lenses are first separated by prescription and use. Single-vision lenses serve one main distance; progressive lenses vary power continuously; surfaced prescription lenses can use the prescription, frame and wearing parameters. Photochromic, tinted, polarised, hard-coated or anti-reflective functions concern material and surface treatment. Higher refractive index does not automatically mean clearer vision; Abbe value, thickness, weight, design and prescription also matter.

Frames determine how lenses sit before the eyes. Acetate, metal, titanium and moulded frames differ in weight, flexibility, joining, allergy and repair. Eye size, bridge, temple length and tilt affect stability and field of view. Lens and frame must be checked together for blank diameter, edge thickness and edging method. Selection from photographs alone can cause slipping, pressure, eyelash contact or displaced optical centres.

Soft contact lenses touch the cornea and are medical devices, so they cannot be managed like ordinary spectacle lenses. Base curve, diameter, water content, oxygen transmission, power, replacement schedule and care affect fit, while coloured lenses add a pigment-layer question. Products require registration and compliant production, and users need professional assessment, hygienic handling and follow-up. The same nominal power is not enough to justify unrestricted substitution.

  • Sourcing and regulatory discussions must begin with product category.

03 · The Stages behind a Pair of Glasses

Material, forming, optical processing, coating, assembly and fitting all shape the finished product.

Resin-lens production starts with a formulation or blank and moves through mould cleaning and pairing, casting, polymerisation, demoulding, trimming, post-curing, inspection and coating. Temperature profiles, mould surfaces, material purity and cleanliness can create bubbles, striae, stress or power errors. Stock lenses are made in standard powers, while personalised surfaced lenses require prescription-based free-form machining, producing different lead times and costs.

Coating determines abrasion resistance, reflection, transmission and cleanability. Hard coats, multilayer anti-reflection and hydrophobic topcoats use different materials and settings. Vacuum, targets, substrate cleaning and thickness control affect residual colour, adhesion and durability. Two lenses carrying the same function name may differ in spectrum and life. Procurement should specify substrate, coating system, test method and warranty instead of comparing layer counts or marketing colour.

Frame and accessory supply includes acetate, metal wire, hinges, screws, nose pads, joining materials, finishing and cases. A spectacle company may buy lenses and frames and perform edging and assembly, or leave some work to a fitting store. Orders should retain lens lots, frame models, edging equipment and assembler identity so loosening, lens release or positioning errors can be assigned to input, processing or use.

  • A deviation at any stage can become more visible when the product is worn.

04 · How a Prescription Becomes an Optical Product

Prescription parameters pass through lens design, processing alignment and assembly checks.

Lens release testing covers spherical and cylindrical power, prism, axis, dimensions, transmission and surface defects, with photochromic, polarised or coating tests added where applicable. Instruments require calibration and the test environment and sampling plan must be defined. A generic certificate without model, lot and measured criteria does not prove that the current order matches the tested sample.

A compliant lens becomes a compliant spectacle only after correct refraction, positioning and assembly. The prescription confirms sphere, cylinder, axis and any addition, while fitting measures pupillary distance and height and considers frame position. Final inspection covers horizontal and vertical optical-centre error, prism imbalance, axis, lens stress and retention. Treating a lens report as proof of the complete spectacles is therefore incomplete.

Progressive and high-prescription lenses are more sensitive to wearing parameters. Frame slip, changed tilt, incorrect fitting height or a poorly chosen corridor can narrow vision, create swim and impair near work. At delivery, the store should check distance, intermediate and near zones, adjust the frame and explain adaptation. Discomfort should trigger prescription and assembly review rather than a blanket instruction to keep wearing the product. Service reports should return to design and processing.

  • Beyond clarity, pupillary distance, optical centre and frame fit also matter.

05 · Personalised Processing and E-commerce Delivery

Online orders expand reach but require accurate transfer of prescription and processing information.

Free-form surfacing turns the prescription, frame shape, pupillary distance, fitting height and wearing parameters into a machining file that creates a personalised back surface. An input error is reproduced precisely, so systems must check eye side, signs, units and ranges and retain the original prescription, order revision, programme, inspection and remake reason. Digital value begins by reducing transcription error and preserving traceability.

E-commerce suits standard frames, sunglasses, reading glasses and repeat lens orders, but prescription spectacles still need reliable refraction and dimensions. Listings should state which products require physical measurement, who reviews uploaded prescriptions, how long consumer data are retained and the conditions for returns or remakes. Virtual try-on can help assess appearance but cannot measure bridge fit, stability, fitting height or optical performance.

Jiangsu government information reports 218 firms in Danyang’s eyewear e-commerce park, including 68 engaged in cross-border business. The park can provide training, product selection and logistics, but countries differ in access, labels and responsible entities for sunglasses, reading glasses, frames and contacts. Digital channels expand reach while magnifying specification and service errors, so controlled orders should first verify compliance documents, packaging, timing and return reasons.

  • A traceable order should connect prescription, product, workshop and after-sales service.

06 · Roles of Wholesale, Stores and Clinics

Eyewear City, retail stores, medical institutions and online channels perform different services.

Danyang Eyewear City brings lenses, frames, processing, refraction and national wholesale into a comparable space. Buyers can assemble product ranges quickly, but the counter, brand and actual producer may differ. Wholesale transactions should verify manufacturer, authorisation, model, invoice and service, with a named reviewer for prescription data. Market scale and low prices do not replace confirmation of source and quality responsibility.

A professional optical store does more than sell. It understands use, performs or verifies refraction, helps select and measure a frame, edges and assembles lenses, adjusts the fit and educates the wearer, then investigates discomfort or breakage. Hospitals and optometry centres are better suited to children, complex refraction, eye-disease-related cases and contact-lens fitting. Channels can collaborate, but ordinary retail promises cannot replace professional judgement.

Parcel integration gives Danyang rapid national reach for small eyewear orders. A 2024 Jiangsu government account also records related parcel volume and its manufacturing effect. Eyewear scratches and deforms easily, so packaging should hold the frame, protect the lenses and prevent internal abrasion. Prescription products must also avoid left-right or customer mix-ups. Logistics data should join order, product lot and service ticket so breakage, wrong shipment and returns can be correctly attributed.

  • Channel convenience does not replace professional refraction or appropriate medical judgement.

07 · Compliance and Consumer Protection in Vision Products

The medical-device status of contact lenses brings registration, clean production and post-market duties.

Eyewear claims must separate measurable functions from broad health promises. Anti-reflection, transmission, photochromic, polarisation or defined spectral performance can be tested under stated methods, while terms such as fatigue relief, eye protection or power control require a defined design, target users and information. Consumers should not select lenses from one functional word, and sellers should not present a lens as a substitute for eye examination, visual-habit management or treatment.

Soft contact lenses and care products require medical-device controls over registration, production environment, materials, sterilisation or microbiology, package seal, shelf life and adverse events. Hydron’s official information describes quality systems and production processes, illustrating requirements well beyond ordinary spectacle lenses. Procurement and retail must verify registration, producer, lot and expiry, and users experiencing redness, pain, photophobia or vision change should stop use and seek clinical advice.

Environmental and occupational-health issues arise in resin preparation, cleaning, coating, tinting, finishing and lens waste. Tax-authority information notes heat-recovery and compressor-efficiency upgrades and green-factory recognition among local firms. Projects should inspect actual energy, water and waste reports, chemical management and worker protection rather than apply a park average to every plant. Lens swarf and process liquids also require handling according to their properties.

  • Labelling, prescription fit and adverse-event handling all affect consumer safety.

08 · Working around Clarity, Comfort and Service

Danyang’s scale gives buyers broad product and customisation choices, while detail determines experience.

Personalised-lens work should start with a defined user and task, such as long computer use, driving, presbyopic reading or thinner high-power lenses. Partners define prescription range, frame parameters, optical design, measurement, wear evaluation and remake rules, then use real orders to measure first-fit success, lead time and complaints. Even advanced surfaces cannot produce consistent experience without a supporting fitting process.

Children, teenagers and older adults need professional service rather than simple promotion. Children require reliable refraction, stable frames and follow-up; older adults can have different distance, intermediate and near needs and varying mobility. Stores, optometry providers and manufacturers can build referral, parameter-feedback and service processes, but should not exaggerate product effects or blame all discomfort on user adaptation.

Outside firms can enter Danyang through optical materials, coating equipment, instruments, lightweight frames, sustainable packaging, digital fitting or cross-border brand services. A project should move through candidate verification, material and product samples, laboratory tests, store fitting, controlled sales and complaint review. The cluster offers choice and fast support, but each transaction still needs a legal entity, production address, defined category, regulatory status and quality agreement.

  • Cooperation terms should define parameters, samples, testing, rework and after-sales responsibility.
