Changde Dingcheng hydraulic cylinders

Creep in a long-stroke cylinder, a scored rod and pressure loss pull material, deep-hole machining, welding and cleanliness into the same displacement trace.

Formation and regional foundations

Machine load establishes bore, rod and mounting form; tube and rod machining create geometry; welds, seals and guides complete the assembly; the bench then separates pressure, stroke, temperature and leakage duties.

A long-stroke cylinder creeps at low speed and slowly drifts during hold. Pressure, displacement, temperature, fluid particles and teardown orientation must share one timeline before tube, rod, weld, seal and machine side-load effects can be separated.

Core geography: A hydraulic-cylinder industry across Changde High-tech Zone and Dingcheng, centred on tubes, rods, seals, welded assembly and bench testing

Cylinder diagnosis from machine pivot to bench teardown

Which physical interface comes first after pressure falls

Arrows carry machine load into the cylinder, then use scratches, pressure and teardown orientation to return to the most likely physical interface.

  • Machine motion and pivot model — The machine linkage model records motion order, posture, load and oil temperature, reconstructing a cylinder event as time-varying side and axial forces.
  • Full-length cylinder-bore survey — The tube is measured for roundness and straightness along its full length and several directions, with honing pattern and periodic wear marked on one axial coordinate.
  • Rod coating and score marks — Rod coating thickness, roughness, scratch direction and post-salt condition remain tied to rod sections, separating seal-contact zones from untouched areas.
  • Welded base and eye assembly — After base and eye welding, axis shift is measured before the toe and heat-affected zone are reviewed against load direction; visual acceptance does not replace alignment.
  • Seal and guide assembly area — Seals and guides enter the assembly with lip direction, fitting tool, cleanliness and lot recorded, retaining their original top, bottom and pressure side after teardown.
  • Cylinder end-cushion zone — The cushion section overlays end speed, chamber pressures and oil temperature on piston position, allowing direct comparison of orifice behaviour in cold and hot oil.

01 · The machine supplies the real load spectrum first

Pivots, posture and motion sequence determine cylinder load.

Cylinder design begins by converting peak load, cycle frequency, side force and emergency motion into a timeline. The load spectrum contains more than a peak: extension speed, dwell, reversals, mounting angle and side force all matter, with emergency retraction or sudden unloading kept as separate segments. Sensors at critical prototype pivots compare calculated load with actual motion and retain uncommon extreme combinations. Every segment has duration, separating a brief peak from accumulated fatigue.

Static peak force misses reversal shock, eccentricity and fatigue, especially for slender rods. Static peak thrust may remain below the design limit while repeated reversal shock and eccentricity accumulate in the rod, eye or weld. Long-stroke cylinders amplify small mounting errors into side load, so sizing by tonnage alone misses the combined effect of posture, frequency and fatigue. Pivot-force direction explains rod side wear better than one thrust value.

Measure critical pivot loads on the prototype and add abnormal motions to bench replay. Measure a full machine cycle first, then convert high-load, rapid-reversal and abnormal actions into bench commands. After a design change, replay the same timeline and compare pressure, travel and pivot force. If machine control logic changes, create a new spectrum rather than carrying forward old durability evidence. The machine team confirms every new spectrum so replay retains real operations.

  • Cylinder rated pressure cannot substitute for the machine side load at different postures.

02 · Deep-bored tubes must hold line and roundness

A small long-bore deviation grows at the seal.

After deep-hole machining, several sections along the tube measure diameter, roundness, and texture in different directions, while one common datum connects straightness along the full axis. Honing tool, feed speed, coolant, and machining time remain with the tube identity so taper or periodic waviness in one zone returns to its process condition. Passing local diameters do not replace assessment of long-range bow and axis continuity.

A passing diameter at one section can coexist with gradual tube bow or axis offset that periodically loads the guide ring and seal during travel. An over-polished bore may also lack the texture needed to retain lubricant, making low-speed stick-slip look like a seal-material fault. The investigation measures full-length geometry, texture, and oil-film condition separately, then checks whether wear position repeats with stroke.

Use multiple sections and directions and link honing settings to same-lot tube results. The survey plots length and direction beside same-lot honing settings. After periodic wear appears, bore line, piston and guide contact bands are compared before tooling or support is changed. The revised cylinder travels full stroke at cold and hot oil temperatures to confirm that creep and chamber leakage were not merely shifted. Cold and hot full-stroke checks ensure correction did not create binding elsewhere.

  • Deep-bore geometry must be unfolded by length and direction; one section cannot reveal periodic wear.

03 · Rod surfaces face scoring and corrosion

Coating, roughness and straightness act together.

One rod identity links substrate heat, heat treatment, coating thickness, roughness, straightness, and handling protection, with scratches or corrosion located along the working stroke. After endurance testing, seal debris, coating wear, and contact bands are photographed in the same orientation so a surface defect can be matched to the path of the seal. Any damaged transport protection remains in the history, preventing a loading score from being misclassified as plating or grinding trouble.

High surface hardness does not stop a microcrack, corrosion pit, or axial handling score from cutting a seal lip; one narrow groove can create a persistent external leak path. When wear appears on only one side of the rod, its orientation is compared with machine installation, pivots, and guide alignment before the coating system is changed. Material or surface treatment becomes a more likely common cause only when comparable contact bands appear around the rod.

Mark damage by stroke zone and compare coating wear with seal debris after durability. Before teardown, damage is recorded by stroke coordinate and coating sections, seal debris and fluid particles are sampled separately. A coating change keeps load and guidance unchanged; an installation correction keeps the rod material. Changing one source at a time reveals where the leak path was removed. Unchanged controls remain in place so several adjustments do not blur repair effect.

  • Rod-coating review must separate the seal-contact band from untouched areas to reveal the wear path.

04 · Weld coaxiality decides whether load is eccentric

Welded eyes and bases redistribute load.

Welding fixtures control joint preparation, heat input, distortion and mounting axis together. Eye, base and tube datums are recorded before welding, while the fixture constrains joint preparation, heat input, sequence and cooling. After welding, mounting-hole axis, tube centre and assembly length are remeasured beside nondestructive results under one identity, preventing weld and dimensional reports from describing different units. Dimensional and nondestructive reports share one assembly and cannot be mixed.

A visually sound weld does not prove assembly coaxiality; small offset becomes rod side load. A weld without visible cracks can still rotate an eye through shrinkage, turning small coaxial error into rod side load and guide wear over a long stroke. A pressure test alone may miss the geometry, which appears later as seal leakage or one-sided coating wear. Coaxial error grows with stroke, so life data is read with post-weld geometry.

Critical dimensions use the same datum and gauge before and after welding, while nondestructive and dimensional reports share one assembly identity; drift beyond the warning level stops downstream work. After sequence or fixture changes, one representative unit is checked for heat-affected zone, port position, and full axis. Seal assembly begins only after that unit passes, rather than machining away weld distortion and pretending the underlying problem disappeared.

  • A weld-strength pass does not prove that the eye and tube axes coincide.

05 · Seal assembly fears invisible particles

One hard particle can create a lasting leakage path.

Assembly confirms seal model and orientation, lubrication method, guide clearance, and dedicated tooling on every unit, and all components meet cleanliness before entering the tube. Flush fluid and oil after first motion are sampled separately so a burr, fibre, or hard particle that later cuts the seal can be linked to assembly. Tool condition and first-motion oil establish the starting background apart from debris generated during endurance.

A seal lip may be scored by a chamfer, burr, or particle on first motion yet show slow drift only during a hot pressure hold. Installing a new seal can restore function temporarily while the contamination source and assembly tool remain, allowing the next cylinder to receive the same cut. Teardown retains lip orientation, particles, and first-motion oil, followed by another first-motion and hold test after chamfer or cleaning correction.

Filter assembly fluid, retain particle samples and inspect pressure and external leakage after first motion. Assembly fluid is filtered, critical parts are checked individually in a controlled area, and pressure, external leakage and particles are inspected after the first full stroke. An abnormal unit is photographed before cleaning. After cleanliness or tooling correction, same-lot parts verify that new debris is no longer produced. Same-lot verification confirms cleanliness improvement without material-lot noise.

  • One hard particle on a seal lip can decide leakage before material grade does.

06 · Cushioning and temperature change end impact

Fluid viscosity rewrites the effect of one orifice.

End-cushion testing covers extension and retraction separately, recording adjustment, pressure peak, and deceleration across entry speed, load, fluid temperature, and viscosity. Cold and hot oil use one travel zero so the orifice effect on energy near stroke end can be compared. The two directions retain separate traces; smooth retraction cannot hide impact or a pressure spike during extension.

Smooth room-temperature low-speed motion does not represent a cold start or fast heavy retraction, because viscosity changes the pressure peak produced by a fixed orifice. Excess cushioning slows the cycle, while weak cushioning sends shock into the cylinder base and machine pivot; sound alone cannot distinguish the two. Entry speed, terminal pressure, deceleration, cycle time and pivot load need to be compared together. A softer stop matters only when both takt time and structural life remain acceptable.

The bench uses separate cold and hot entry conditions, and every trace is tied to cushion setting, oil temperature, speed and load. After an orifice or needle change, pressure peak, deceleration and total cycle time are compared only under the same duty so a test difference is not mistaken for improvement. If machine posture changes entry speed or external load, tuning stops and validation returns to the prototype. The report separates bench findings from settings that still require installation confirmation.

  • One cushion orifice behaves differently in cold and hot oil, so end impact needs oil temperature.

07 · The bench separates chamber loss from outside seepage

Pressure drift needs several methods.

Bench testing records pressure, displacement, temperature, speed and outside seepage position together. The pressure-hold and cycling bench captures both chamber pressures, piston travel, oil temperature, valve state and external seep location, with hose expansion assessed through an isolation step. Cold, hot and end-of-life checks use the same points so chamber leakage is not mixed with system pressure loss. Isolation gives each pressure-loss route its own path for attribution.

Valve leakage, cylinder chamber loss and hose expansion can all create movement and cannot all be assigned to seals. Pressure drift may arise from cylinder sealing, a system valve, hose elasticity or thermal stabilisation, so pressure loss alone cannot assign responsibility. Low-speed creep can combine friction and geometry. A bench using cleaner or warmer fluid than the machine cannot stand for installed behaviour. Travel before thermal stability is marked separately from chamber leakage.

Before pressure hold, the cylinder and external valve circuit are isolated in stages and readings repeat after oil temperature stabilises; cycling then crosses the stick-slip region at fixed speed. Complete pressure, displacement, and valve-position traces are captured at the event before deciding whether the signal points to internal leakage, the external circuit, or friction. Targeted teardown begins only when the curves narrow the problem to the cylinder, avoiding blind replacement of seals and guides.

  • Pressure decay needs isolation to distinguish valve, hose and cylinder-chamber loss paths.

08 · Teardown returns wear marks to orientation

A removed part must remember its original top and bottom.

After endurance testing, rod, piston, guide rings, and seals are marked for top, bottom, pressure side, and stroke zone before removal, while fluid and deposits are sampled by location. The first photographs precede cleaning, and each component then enters its own labelled tray so turning or mixing cannot erase the original spatial relation. One-sided wear, particle accumulation, and bench events can therefore still be matched after the assembly has been dismantled.

Aggressive cleaning removes oil film, fine particles, and deposit boundaries, while mixed components strip one-sided wear of its orientation in the machine; either action can destroy a diagnostic clue. If a wear line survives without its top, bottom, or pressure-side position, teardown cannot separate mounting eccentricity, tube bow, and a local material fault. Cleaning therefore begins with low-disturbance sampling and becomes progressively stronger only after photography and orientation marking are complete.

Photograph and sample before cleaning, then align wear, fluid and bench exceptions by time. Teardown follows photograph, sample, light clean, measure and section, with every step citing assembly and orientation. Wear marks align to pressure and travel by time and stroke zone before the shortest reproduction motion is chosen. The rebuilt unit retains orientation to confirm that wear at the original location stops growing. The revised unit is torn down in the same orientation to confirm wear location changed.

  • A removed part must retain its orientation or its wear marks lose the matching machine load.

Rated pressure and stroke are not a complete duty. Each decision returns to mounting posture, load spectrum, speed, temperature and fluid cleanliness; a bench pass does not automatically replace machine durability.
