Anshun Xixiu airframe structural parts

An airframe load-bearing structure in Anshun is shaped by more than cutting. Forging flow, internal casting defects, residual stress in thin walls and special-process records can reappear during assembly, making unbroken material, process and inspection identity the scarce capability.

Formation and regional foundations

Aviation forging, casting and machining took root in Anshun before Xixiu added structural-part parks, workshops and precision capacity through major projects. Planning establishes spatial direction; current processes, equipment and quality approvals determine whether a particular part is ready for repeat delivery.

A fold, shrinkage cavity or segregated zone created in a large frame or thin-wall casting may not emerge until machining or nondestructive inspection. Xixiu is best understood by following material identity through forming, stress relief, precision cutting, special processes and assembly release.

Core geography: An airframe load-bearing component area in Xixiu where aviation forging, precision casting, complex machining, special processes and nondestructive testing meet

Five responsibilities from formed blank to assembly release

Where defects, stress and configuration records move in Xixiu

Forgings and castings take different early routes, then converge at precision machining, special processing and assembly inspection. Rework follows the defect mechanism rather than one universal reverse path.

  • Forged and cast blanks — Heat, grain flow, melt batch and heat-treatment condition begin at forming.
  • Metallurgy and NDT — Ultrasonic, radiographic or penetrant inspection locates hidden internal and surface flaws.
  • Complex-surface machining — Fixturing, stock and cutting sequence control distortion and datum drift.
  • Thermal, surface and joining processes — Thermal history, coatings and joining parameters change fatigue and corrosion behaviour.
  • Assembly and configuration release — Holes, gaps, serial identity and nonconformities close at assembly state.

01 · A defect already has a direction inside the blank

A fold or cavity may emerge only after expensive machining.

Once a large frame blank contains a forging lap, segregation or casting shrinkage, later cutting can expose the flaw but cannot restore the broken continuity of metal. Its orientation to the finished surface also determines whether roughing or finishing exposes it. Because Xixiu uses both forging and precision-casting routes, a purchasing drawing must first identify load paths, material condition and forbidden zones. Similar outlines do not make load-bearing blanks interchangeable.

The cost of blank risk depends heavily on when it is discovered. The same discontinuity found in the blank or before assembly spans several expensive process stages. A rejection after finish machining, surface treatment or trial assembly already includes machine hours, tools, fixtures and special processes. Yet inspecting as early as possible is not always sufficient, because roughing can expose surfaces unavailable on the original blank. The inspection window must be designed with flaw type and stock allowance.

For a new part, review the forging or casting drawing together with the finished model, load direction, mechanical-test locations and NDT class. A coupon cut from an unrepresentative region can also overstate material performance. The manufacturer can then mark minimum stock, prohibited sampling areas and surfaces to reinspect after roughing. First-article records should retain heat or pour identity so a dimensional anomaly can be traced to the actual blank, not merely to a machining program.

  • Start with the flaw mechanism before setting inspection and machining order.

02 · Forging flow should follow the load

Press tonnage is not shorthand for forging quality.

Load-bearing forgings rely on continuous grain flow under fatigue, and billet preparation, parting and final deformation bend that flow in different directions. Grain flow changes most readily at rib roots, corners and hole margins under parting and stock choices. A large press creates forming space but does not automatically give sound structure at thickness changes, rib roots and hole margins. Anshun aviation-forging capability must be tied to alloy, envelope and heat-treatment state rather than inferred from equipment alone.

An allowance cut too tightly may carry laps or decarburized skin into the finished part. Uneven post-forging cooling can carry new stress into stabilisation and later cutting. Excess stock adds cutting time and can release more residual stress as metal is removed. The useful optimum is not maximum material yield alone; grain flow, defect-removal zones and machining stability must coexist. Test coupons also need locations that represent the body rather than extreme deformation regions.

A complex-forging enquiry should describe feedstock size, cut direction, preform sequence, parting location, deformation at critical sections and heat-treatment batch. First-piece sectioning compares simulated flow, actual structure and NDT indications on common coordinates. First-piece validation should map macro-flow, mechanical properties and NDT results to model coordinates, not just measure final size. If a design revision moves ribs or holes, the earlier forging conclusion needs renewed assessment.

  • Place billet preparation, parting, deformation and sampling on one process map.

03 · Integral casting concentrates risk in one pour

Fewer joints also mean fewer opportunities for later correction.

Complex thin-wall castings can combine several parts into one structure, but molten metal must fill long paths and narrow sections within a limited interval. Solidification order between thin walls and heavy hot spots determines whether feeding remains effective. A mismatch in shell temperature, pouring rate, melt cleanliness or feeding can leave cold shuts, inclusions or porosity. Visual acceptance removes only some surface concerns; radiography, ultrasound or specified sectioning must establish internal integrity.

Integration is often valued for lower mass and fewer assembly steps, yet a local flaw can reject the whole unit. Whole-part rejection risk rises with integration, while permission for local repair becomes tighter. If design has not reserved space for feeding, inspection and later machining, the foundry must compromise within locked geometry. Xixiu precision-casting capability is therefore better judged by repeatable wall transitions and flaw classes than by maximum external dimensions.

Before a complex-casting trial, the designer can identify critical walls, no-flaw zones, repairable regions and final machined surfaces; the foundry can then explain pour direction, feeder removal and inspection access. Where feeder-removal and final machining surfaces overlap, validated removal stock is also needed. Radiographs or flaw maps should be tied to part serial identity. Grinding or weld repair on a first piece also needs location, cycle count and subsequent heat treatment under configuration control.

  • Gating, feeding and shell stability jointly determine thin-wall fill.

04 · Thin-wall machining is vulnerable to moving datums

Accurate tool motion does not ensure accuracy after unclamping.

Airframe frames often combine deep pockets, thin ribs and dense hole patterns. Poor chip evacuation in deep pockets causes recutting and raises local heat and surface damage together. Removing most of the blank during roughing redistributes residual stress, so a part can meet coordinates in the fixture and warp after release, moving holes and assembly faces. Multi-axis machines provide access; fixturing, cut sequence, temperature control and intermediate measurement provide stability.

Machine positioning accuracy misses two major error sources: stiffness varies across the blank, and repeated setups carry datum error into later hole patterns. Fixture thermal growth and repeat location can also appear as dimensional drift in the part. The fastest cutting parameters may not produce the shortest total time on a thin wall because distortion, rework and remeasurement consume the gain. Program review should consider load, chip evacuation and metrology access together.

A first article can capture geometry after roughing, after stabilization and before finishing to reveal distortion in the free state. Free-state 3D scans can relate springback direction to the exact region of material removal. Fixture-release sequence, ambient temperature and measurement datums belong in the record so springback can be separated from metrology drift. When a local deviation appears, inspect stock and fixturing path before changing code; a one-time offset can hide systematic movement.

  • Leave room for stress release and realignment between roughing and finishing.

05 · Heat treatment changes more than hardness

Geometry, microstructure and surface condition couple again in the furnace.

During solution treatment, ageing or stress relief, loading orientation, heating and cooling rate, and furnace-zone uniformity all influence final shape. Different furnace supports give the same thin-wall frame a different gravity-distortion path. Treatment can create the target microstructure while amplifying asymmetric stress left after roughing. On a thin wall, acceptable hardness does not replace free-state geometry, and furnace-batch history must connect to each serialised part.

Outsourced heat treatment creates another information break. Transport impact and temporary support can also change datums across an outsourced treatment. A dispatch note carrying only part name and quantity does not tell the processor where support is allowed or which rib is vulnerable, and later distortion cannot be assigned to material or loading. Xixiu collaboration should define fixtures, witness thermocouples, hardness locations and straightening limits as process duties rather than routine logistics.

When arranging thermal or surface work, send material condition, prior stock removal, permissible support zones and critical post-treatment dimensions with the part. Repeated cycles near a material-sensitive range can consume existing property margin. Measure in the free state on return before choosing finish machining or straightening. Any repeated cycle needs assessment of cumulative metallurgical effects, with furnace run, temperature curve and inspection result held in one history rather than a lone certificate.

  • Relate loading, thermal history and post-treatment geometry.

06 · NDT must know which flaw it is seeking

Probe, beam direction and surface condition define what can be seen.

Ultrasound suits some internal reflectors, radiography makes volumetric flaws more visible, and penetrant or magnetic methods address surface-opening or near-surface discontinuities. Surface curvature and roughness alter coupling and background noise and therefore need process limits. Curvature, thickness changes and obstruction create blind zones. “NDT passed” says little without method, sensitivity, coverage and acceptance criteria for the load-bearing part.

Inspection results depend on process timing. An indication of the same size can receive a different disposition in high- and low-stress zones. A rough blank surface can hide small indications in noise, while a flaw found after deep cutting may leave no thickness for removal. The inspection plan is therefore not a service appended at the end; it shapes roughing stock, local reinspection and final release. Inspectors also need the relationship between flaw orientation and applied load.

A first-article inspection plan should mark critical zones, inaccessible regions, reference blocks and expected flaw directions on the model before selecting methods. Without retained scan paths and calibration state, a later inspection cannot be reproduced accurately. Beyond a disposition, the report can retain indication coordinates, amplitude or image number and the part’s condition at inspection. If later work enters a new material layer, coverage needs fresh assessment rather than reliance on the blank-stage result.

  • Choose the method by flaw mechanism rather than treating one pass as total integrity.

07 · Supplier handoffs revolve around configuration

One part number may still carry different drawing and process states.

Airframe structures acquire controlled states through design changes, material substitutions, tooling revisions and deviation permits. Process approval often limits site, equipment family and key parameters and does not automatically transfer. If forging, machining and special processors keep separate versions, assembly may receive outwardly identical parts with different approval bases. Configuration management links drawing revision, process approval, serial identity and nonconformities to one physical item.

Short distance inside a park reduces transport but does not remove version mismatch. Serial identity must remain legible or be transferred under control after cleaning, blasting and coating. Urgent rework can begin after a phone call and leave paperwork behind, blurring permission and inspection responsibility. On a load-bearing part, uncontrolled blending or hole correction can alter the fatigue assumption; restored geometry does not substitute for engineering approval.

Each interplant transfer can list the current drawing, completed processes, open issues and permitted next step against serial numbers. The configuration pack should show whether each open deviation closed and which inspection supported closure. The receiver checks physical marking before confirming that repair or deviation authority covers the active revision. A design change affecting the blank or inspection access should return to forging or casting for reassessment, not merely alter the last machining instruction.

  • Transfer serial identity, drawing revision and nonconformities together.

08 · Judge delivery capability through a specific part

A workshop becomes capability only through approved process use.

The national designation confirms Xixiu’s industrial direction, while major-project disclosures show continuing construction and expansion in forging, structural-part parks and machining. Analogue assessment also compares material, wall thickness, tool access and special processes, not outline alone. Those facts do not answer whether a given alloy, size or flaw class is in stable production. Deliverability rests on the legal entity, production site, approved process scope and recent history of comparable parts.

A successful prototype and stable production are separated by tool life, fixture repeatability, furnace loading and operator variation. Trend data across repeat lots reveals whether tooling wear or thermal drift is eroding process margin. One measurement report establishes one part, not multi-lot process capability. A buyer gains more from asking how many independent lots of a comparable structure completed full release than from asking whether a supplier can “make aviation parts.”

An enquiry pack can separate a new material-new structure, an existing material-new structure and a mature analogue, assigning different first-article, test and witness requirements to each. Assembly-side hole correction, gap and rework records often best test whether upstream delivery is truly stable. Candidates should identify in-house and outsourced steps and the approving authority for critical special processes. Final assessment includes assembly feedback and issue-closure speed, keeping new buildings or planned capacity distinct from verified delivery history.

  • Confirm maturity through first article, repeat lots and assembly feedback.
