Tianjin

Tianjin was Beijing’s maritime gateway, a dense field of foreign concessions, a city occupied by the Eight-Nation Alliance and a centre where modern industry, commerce and education grew. Differences along the Hai River reflect unequal distributions of sovereignty, capital, transport and residential communities.

City timeline

  • 1860 · Treaty port and concessions — After opening, concessions spread along the Hai and the port became a route toward Beijing.
  • 1900 · Eight-Nation occupation — Military occupation redrew boundaries between the old city and concessions and expanded foreign control.
  • 1901—1937 · Industry, education and multiple municipalities — Banks, docks, schools, factories and Chinese firms grew under fragmented administration.
  • 1937—1945 · Occupation by invading Japanese forces — Invading Japanese forces and their occupation authorities controlled Tianjin’s ports, railways, finance and daily life.
  • 1949—present · Industrial base, port expansion and heritage — Heavy industry and port growth expanded the city while former concession districts became heritage and commercial space.
