Changchun

Changchun is known for cars and film, but its urban form was deeply shaped by the South Manchuria Railway zone and Manchukuo’s “Xinjing” plan. Monumental roads and offices are evidence of Japanese colonial rule, extraction and propaganda.

City timeline

  • 1907—1931 · SMR railway zone — Station, railway community and commerce became a node of Japanese expansion.
  • 1932—1945 · Manchukuo’s “Xinjing” — Capital planning, ministries and ceremony projected colonial legitimacy.
  • 1945—1948 · Postwar recovery and civil war — Surrender, recovery and military conflict transformed the city.
  • 1953—1956 · First Automobile Works — A major national project drew engineers, workers and a vast work-unit community.
  • 1990s—present · Auto restructuring and colonial heritage — Market restructuring coincides with clearer interpretation of Manchukuo sites.
