CITY GATEWAY

Yiwu

See how everyday products connect factories, traders and markets around the world.

Knowledge keys

Three concepts prevent Yiwu from being misread as a warehouse of cheap goods.

  • A market is not a factory — Yiwu connects buyers with supply from the city and across China. Its value lies in discovery, comparison, consolidation, services and circulation; trace the relation between booth and production origin.
  • Many products in small batches require a system — Samples, orders, translation, warehousing, consolidation, inspection, declaration and logistics need consistent product, quantity, packaging and responsibility data. Ambiguity in one link creates risk.
  • International life extends beyond the trading hall — Registration, food, education, residence, work permits, dispute handling and daily services determine whether foreign residents can build a life. Internationalisation is also public infrastructure.

Business visits and sourcing

Yiwu concentrates products, suppliers and services; it does not automatically guarantee the lowest price, minimum order, compliant export or reliable delivery. Real sourcing starts with a brief and a verification sheet.

  • BEFORE THE MARKET · Write a product and market brief first — List destination country, use case, material, dimensions, performance, standards, packaging, quantity, target lead time and non-negotiables. Without a brief, market abundance becomes noise.
  • A QUOTE IS NOT A PRICE · Build a comparable quotation sheet — Put tax basis, MOQ, samples, tooling, packaging, delivery point, Incoterms, payment milestones, inspection and after-sales terms in one sheet. “About the same” is not comparable.
  • ENTITY AND CAPABILITY · Distinguish booth, contracting entity and actual producer — One booth may connect a trading company, owned factory or external factories. Verify who contracts, receives payment, invoices, controls quality and prepares export documents; use independent audits where needed.
  • TRADE MODE · Do not treat market procurement trade as a universal shortcut — Market procurement trade has participant, platform, product-control and destination requirements. Confirm eligibility and responsibility transaction by transaction using current official rules and qualified advice.
  • CROSS-BORDER E-COMMERCE · Choose market and fulfilment model before platform — Direct-to-consumer sites, marketplaces, wholesale and overseas warehouses require different product, margin, compliance, inventory and return capabilities. Parks and service providers do not replace a business model or destination-country obligations.
  • RISK BOUNDARY · Verify IP, product compliance and payment safety separately — Visual similarity, a popular design or supplier assurance is not proof of authorisation. Trademarks, patents, certification, labelling, sanctions, export controls, tax and payment safety require the relevant authorities, banks and qualified advisers.
  • LOCAL INDUSTRY · Yiwu small commodities — Specialist markets, county manufacturing, cross-border e-commerce and global logistics bring many small-commodity supply chains together in Yiwu. A long-term market-led development path has reinforced trading, product display, order organization, logistics and surrounding manufacturing.

Suggested routes

Routes follow task order: decide what you need to understand before choosing a market or district.

  • FIRST DAY · Build the city frame around one category — Confirm the district and access in the morning, observe the service ecosystem at lunch, then compare five to ten booths in one category and use the evening to organise notes.
  • TWO-DAY SOURCING · Discover, compare, then verify — Day one builds a shortlist with samples, quotations and entity details. Day two revisits only a few candidates to verify specification, packaging, lead time, payment, inspection, intellectual property and export responsibility.
  • A DAY BEYOND THE MARKET · Choose Fotang or Fenshuitang — Choose Fotang for trading-port urbanism, or Fenshuitang for language, translation and modern ideas. Do not force both outer visits and the wholesale market into one day.

Practical details

Allow at least two days for orientation and more for real sourcing, depending on categories and shortlist size. Do not treat arrival day as a full procurement day.

  • MARKET NAVIGATION · Record district, gate, floor and booth — International Trade City is not one point. Save bilingual address, contact, phone and booth number, then enter through the correct gate.
  • ARRIVAL AND LOCAL TRAVEL · Replan around live rail, flight and local transit information — Before booking, confirm services, arrival point and operating hours through rail, airline and local-transit operator channels. On departure day, use Amap or Baidu Maps to check the route from the arrival point to the correct market district, gate, floor and booth.
  • FOREIGN VISITORS · Treat registration, visas and work permits as separate matters — A short business visit does not automatically confer permission to work or operate a business. Check rules for the actual activity, status and duration through national and Yiwu foreign-service channels.
  • PAYMENT AND CONTRACT · Entity, invoice, account and contract must align — Do not make large transactions on chat messages or personal accounts alone. Verify contracting and receiving entities, invoice, export responsibility, refund terms and dispute resolution, and keep traceable records.
  • BUDGET METHOD · Separate visit cost from order cost — Visit cost covers travel, accommodation, interpretation, samples, courier and audits. Order cost also includes goods, packaging, inspection, domestic logistics, declaration, freight, insurance, tax and returns. Do not set a total budget until each responsible party provides written pricing, conditions and validity.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Yiwu is primarily a task and commute decision. Sourcing, city life and outer cultural visits favour different bases. Foreign guests should also confirm that the property can receive them and complete current registration requirements.

  • SOURCING · Futian and the International Trade City area — Best for repeated market visits and trade-service meetings, but calculate access to the actual gate rather than relying on “near the market.”
  • CITY LIFE · Everyday-service areas in Choucheng or Jiangdong — Better for food, daily errands and longer stays. Map real peak-hour travel to your main meeting place before booking.
  • FOTANG OR RURAL VISITS · Move only when early or late access matters — Most cultural visits work as day trips. Move for one night only when permitted fieldwork or early/late access truly matters, and confirm the return journey.
