CITY GATEWAY
Taiyuan
A northern provincial capital extending along the Fen River valley, where housing and travel depend on heating, winter weather, river crossings and north-south distance.
Taiyuan: shrine conduct, grotto conservation and a two-sector journey
Jinci and Tianlongshan share one 5A designation, yet one is a suburban shrine garden and the other a grotto museum constrained by mountain roads and weather. A shared brand does not erase distance, tickets or conservation rules.
- Recognise the setting in which culture actually occurs — At Jinci identify axis, subsidiary halls and water system; at Tianlongshan identify cliff, cave numbers and missing sculpture. Do not let legend replace labels and dating.
- Participate only where the setting clearly allows it — Handle booking, tickets and dedicated transport for each sector separately. In rain, ice or road controls, prioritise Tianlongshan suspension notices and do not force the connection.
- Separate residents’ lives, ritual and performance — Keep quiet in shrine space and do not touch sculpture, old trees, channels or carvings. Avoid flash and barriers, and do not sensationalise the history of displaced heritage.
