Qianxinan: cone karst, Bouyei villages and upland farming etiquette

Qianxinan’s peak forests, valleys and villages form a working and lived environment. Bouyei, Miao, Han and other traditions appear in particular communities and festivals; one performance cannot represent the whole prefecture.

  • Recognise the setting in which culture actually occurs — Observe relationships between peaks, paddy fields, irrigation, village roads and house orientation, while distinguishing farm work, community rites and scenic-area performances.
  • Participate only where the setting clearly allows it — Confirm the organiser, time and payment rules before joining festivals, song, dance or farming activities. Do not enter fields, homes or ritual centres without permission.
  • Separate residents’ lives, ritual and performance — Yield to farm traffic and residents’ routines, and ask before photographing people, dress, work or courtyards. Do not use “untouched” as a demand that communities remain unchanged.
