Pu’er
Pu’er coffee fieldwork starts from farms and mills in Simao, Ning’er and nearby areas and follows one lot through green grading, roasting and consumer-product development.
Pu’er, Yunnan: official boundaries, on-site observation and public etiquette
Key places to understand in Pu’er, Yunnan include Mohei Ancient Town, Pu'er National Park. Read registered names, statutory or managed boundaries, attraction components and same-day operations separately before placing city culture in a specific place and time.
- Recognise the setting in which culture actually occurs — Begin with entrance signs, official names and mapped boundaries, then distinguish original fabric or landforms, interpretation and modern visitor facilities. Old plans, historical grades and itineraries do not prove com…
- Participate only where the setting clearly allows it — Join only interpretation, exhibitions, transport, religious access or festivals explicitly open that day. Check booking, admission, photography, weather and safety, and keep residents’ everyday life distinct from staged…
- Separate residents’ lives, ritual and performance — Do not cross closures or touch heritage and geological features. Ask before photographing identifiable people, religious activity, children or small groups, and follow ecological, fire, works and crowd controls.

Pu’er business fieldwork: start with a specific project
Pu’er coffee fieldwork follows one cherry lot rather than a sequence of estate tastings. Simao, Ning’er and nearby origins host farms and wet mills; the urban area and industrial parks handle hulling, grading, optical sorting, roasting, soluble production and packing; origin markets, estates and e-commerce connect buyers and consumers. Select one origin and process and verify variety, elevation, cherry maturity, fermentation, drying, moisture, water activity, defects and cupping to judge green or finished consistency.
- WHY THIS CITY · How Pu’er's business base was formed — Yunnan highland climate and smallholder mountain production create varied flavours. Farming and mills in Simao and Ning’er, dry milling and processing in Pu’er, cupping and market services turn cherries into green and consumer goods. Washed, natural and honey processes differ in harvest, fermentation and drying, while rain, labour and storage affect lots, so origin stories must match records and contract samples.
- LINKED CLUSTER · Pu’er Coffee — Pu’er coffee spans cultivation, cherry processing, green-bean grading, roasting, soluble production, and specialty services, supporting commercial and specialty green beans, roasted coffee, drip bags, and processed products. A low-latitude highland climate, extensive farms, long commercial cultivation, and wet- and dry-mill networks provide the base. Recent emphasis on specialty quality, deep processing, and origin brands is extending the industry beyond green-bean supply.
- WHO SHOULD VISIT · Three project types merit fieldwork — Suitable for specialty and commercial green buyers, brands and roasters, beverage chains, drip, cold-brew or soluble development and traceable smallholder programmes. One cupping and flavour description is insufficient for an annual contract because season, process and storage vary.
- HOW TO ENTER · Sourcing, location and joint validation require different routes — Enter green coffee through one origin, process and contract sample; consumer goods through one blend or single origin, roast and pack; farm partnerships through one harvest and several traceable lots. Compare multiple lots before long-term volume.
- PEOPLE AND OPERATIONS · Measure talent by role, location and retention — Verify agronomy and crop protection, harvest, wet or natural processing, drying and storage, green grading, cupping, roasting, extraction, quality, packing and channel roles. Cuppers, mills and buyers need the same lot IDs, and roasters should feed flavour changes back to green selection. Farm experience should become records rather than be replaced by brand story.
- LOGISTICS AND MARKET · Validate service radius with real orders and delivery routes — Cherries need timely mill delivery. Parchment and green coffee need rain, moisture regain, odour and lot controls, with liners, sacks, pallets and storage agreed. Roasted beans need roast date, degassing, oxygen and heat control; liquid and soluble products use different packs. Avoid strong-odour co-loading and retest moisture and cup at destination.
- RISK BOUNDARY · Do not enter payment or asset-heavy decisions under these conditions — Key risks are immature or mixed picking, uncontrolled fermentation, inadequate wet-season drying, moisture regain, mixed lots and contract-sample mismatch. Do not contract annual volume if process records, bag IDs, physical grade and cup do not match.
- GO OR STOP · Write down whether the project should continue before leaving — Do not end fieldwork with “keep in touch.” Classify the project as proceed, decide after missing evidence, or stop, and record an owner and the next written milestone. Without sample results, a defined quotation, a compliance path or real customer validation, do not enter long leases, equipment purchases or large prepayments.
Two-day business fieldwork sequence
This is not a sightseeing checklist. Day one confirms capability and project interfaces; day two confirms customers, validation, property, cost and responsibility. Unbooked plants, laboratories, warehouses and production sites are not casual attractions.
- BEFORE ARRIVAL · Fix a specific project and responsible counterparts — Prepare green or finished use, origin, variety, process, screen, defects, moisture, water activity, target cup, volume, window and pack; bring one cupping form and sealed contract sample. Book farms, mills, dry mill, cupping and roasting.
- DAY 1 · Trace one cherry lot to parchment — Day one proves how cherries are picked, processed and dried and whether lot identity is retained.
- DAY 2 · Then trace green grading to the finished cup — Day two proves the processed lot meets contract and channel requirements after dry milling, cupping and roasting.
- TAKEAWAYS · Every meeting should produce dated written evidence — Bring back the target legal entity and address, product or service specification, sample or pilot conditions, standard and permit revisions, quotation validity, delivery owner, payment terms, IP boundaries and stop conditions. A verbal promise alone is not project progress.
- VISIT BOUNDARY · Public industry information does not mean site access — Arrange visits through official company, zone or authority channels. Without written permission, do not enter non-public areas, photograph lines, laboratories, storage, access controls or internal documents, or send identity and authorisation files through insecure channels.
What to calculate when assessing a city
Ask every candidate city to answer for the same product, capacity or team size and the same delivery date. City output, company counts and headline-company lists build a shortlist; they do not replace project quotations.
- FULL COST · Do not ask only about rent or incentives — Includes farm and cherries, harvest, mill, fermentation and drying loss, hulling and grading, cupping and tests, liners and sacks, storage, freight and financing. Finished goods add roast, grind or extraction, pack, channel, returns and freshness loss. Compare accepted green kilograms or saleable finished cost, not cherry or green quote alone.
- PERMITS · Separate company setup from sector permits — Coffee only. Verify farm inputs and residues, process water and hygiene, food production and packing, contaminants, labels, nutrition or claims, traceability and recall. Cross-border green coffee adds plant health, quarantine, fumigation or other destination requirements and contracts. By-products such as cascara need use-specific food checks without unsubstantiated health claims.
- COUNTERPARTY · Identify demand, technical approval, procurement and payment owners — The demand owner, technical approver, contracting buyer and payer may differ. Obtain written confirmation of decision order, trial volume, acceptance, payment terms, service and dispute handling.
- SOURCE DATE · Confirm the year, entity and geography behind public figures — Record city, district, zone, cluster and company figures separately. Refresh capacity, available property, staffing, pricing, permits and access before signing. Do not add incompatible statistical scopes.
- EXIT · Calculate stop and exit cost before contracting — Verify deposits, leases, retrofit residual value, dedicated equipment and inventory, staffing, data or tooling ownership, warranty claims, early termination and relocation cost. Do not make an asset-heavy commitment without written exit terms.
Understand the industrial geography before choosing a site
Simao and Ning’er farms and mills, urban dry milling and processing, and cupping, brand and trade nodes play separate roles. Pu’er and Kunming are not the same logistics or market node. Follow one coffee lot from mountain farms and mills to urban processing and trade over two days, routing by roads, processing season and booked addresses.
- INDUSTRIAL AREA · Simao coffee farms and mills — Useful for variety, elevation, plot, harvest, flotation, pulped or whole-fruit processing, fermentation and drying. Book estates and respect farmer and process boundaries.
- INDUSTRIAL AREA · Ning’er and nearby origin supply — Useful for smallholder or cooperative lots, cherry price and quality, central processing, parchment storage and lot handover.
- INDUSTRIAL AREA · Pu’er city processing, cupping and brand node — Useful for hulling, grading, optical sorting, cupping, green storage, roasting, drip bags or soluble production, packing and channels.
- READ THE SCALE · A city, a zone and a company are not one address — Map R&D, production, market, validation and logistics nodes before calculating travel by actual address. A functional diagram explains roles; it is not navigation, distance measurement or evidence of site access.
