Ordos: distinct boundaries for ritual space, grassland memory and desert resorts

The Genghis Khan commemorative tradition and Xiangshawan resort products share one city but follow very different ethical and operating boundaries. The former includes spaces that retain ritual meaning; the latter organises visitors around desert conditions and managed activities. Performances, rites and everyday community life are not interchangeable.

  • Recognise the setting in which culture actually occurs — At the mausoleum, distinguish visitor interpretation, ritual space and the Darkhad custodial tradition. At Xiangshawan, distinguish natural dunes, transport infrastructure, resort islands and separately operated activit…
  • Participate only where the setting clearly allows it — Join ceremonies or interpretation only under current notices and on-site guidance. Check weather, age, health and insurance limits for each desert activity; a package does not guarantee every product is operating.
  • Separate residents’ lives, ritual and performance — Do not touch ritual objects, interrupt rites or treat custodians as performers. In the desert, use designated paths and activity zones, do not chase animals and take all waste away.

Ordos business fieldwork: start with a specific project

Ordos cashmere fieldwork begins with fibre, not a soft sample garment. Pastoral areas supply raw fibre; Dalad and other areas collect, scour and dehair; Dongsheng and related zones concentrate spinning, knitting, garment development, testing, brands and trade. A sweater or yarn order needs cashmere content, fineness, length, colour, yarn count, gauge, weight, pilling and shrinkage linked to material and lot. All content is strictly limited to cashmere fibre, textiles and apparel.

  • WHY THIS CITY · How Ordos's business base was formed — Local cashmere goats, fibre trade, dehairing and branded manufacture accumulated into a chain from dehaired fibre and yarn to sweaters, scarves, shawls and coats. Material is seasonal and price-variable, while dyeing, blending, fulling and finishing alter performance, so fibre tests and approved samples are essential.
  • LINKED CLUSTER · Ordos Cashmere — Ordos covers raw-cashmere procurement, dehairing, spinning, knitting, garments, brands, and exports, supporting sourcing of dehaired cashmere, yarn, knitwear, scarves, and garment-development services. Local cashmere goats, accumulated dehairing and textile skills, a major brand, and specialist processors formed the chain. Dongsheng concentrates research, spinning, and brands, while Dalad and other areas provide dehairing and primary processing.
  • WHO SHOULD VISIT · Three project types merit fieldwork — Suitable for brands, retail, designers and gift buyers sourcing cashmere yarn, sweaters, scarves, shawls, coats and home textiles, and for fibre testing and small development. Hand feel and brand name cannot establish content, pilling, shrinkage or lot stability.
  • HOW TO ENTER · Sourcing, location and joint validation require different routes — Enter yarn through one dehaired lot and tests, garments through an approved sample and specification, and brand partnerships through one small collection. Seal fibre, colour standards and samples, then complete care, pilling and small-batch production rather than relying on one touch.
  • PEOPLE AND OPERATIONS · Measure talent by role, location and retention — Verify animal-fibre identification, fibre buying, dehairing, spinning, dyeing, knitting, garment technology, testing, pattern design, supply chain and channel roles. Fibre staff approve material, pattern staff dimensions, and quality pilling and shrinkage; sales cannot explain all. Animal-welfare or origin claims need records, not promotion.
  • LOGISTICS AND MARKET · Validate service radius with real orders and delivery routes — Raw and dehaired fibre need moisture, pest and lot controls; yarn and garments need colour-lot, compression, crease, odour and packing controls. High-value small lots can be traced by carton and item, with care and resale decisions for returns. Seasonal orders constrain spinning and knitting, so dates follow actual process schedules rather than brand promises.
  • RISK BOUNDARY · Do not enter payment or asset-heavy decisions under these conditions — Cashmere is exposed to false content or origin, undeclared blends, dye variation, shrinkage and pilling and seasonal delays. Do not enter long-term sourcing unless fibre tests, approved sample, specification and volume lot match.
  • GO OR STOP · Write down whether the project should continue before leaving — Do not end fieldwork with “keep in touch.” Classify the project as proceed, decide after missing evidence, or stop, and record an owner and the next written milestone. Without sample results, a defined quotation, a compliance path or real customer validation, do not enter long leases, equipment purchases or large prepayments.

Two-day business fieldwork sequence

This is not a sightseeing checklist. Day one confirms capability and project interfaces; day two confirms customers, validation, property, cost and responsibility. Unbooked plants, laboratories, warehouses and production sites are not casual attractions.

  • BEFORE ARRIVAL · Fix a specific project and responsible counterparts — Prepare product, composition, fineness or yarn count, weight, gauge, colour standard, size chart, pilling and shrinkage, care, pack, volume, date and market. Bring a benchmark without asking to copy protected design. Book material, dehairing, spinning, knitting and garment nodes, with all meetings limited to cashmere fibre, textiles and apparel.
  • DAY 1 · Trace one raw lot to yarn — Day one proves that cashmere source, dehairing result and yarn specification are verifiable by lot.
  • DAY 2 · Then trace knit sample to channel returns — Day two proves yarn still meets garment and sales requirements after knitting, finishing and wear and wash.
  • TAKEAWAYS · Every meeting should produce dated written evidence — Bring back the target legal entity and address, product or service specification, sample or pilot conditions, standard and permit revisions, quotation validity, delivery owner, payment terms, IP boundaries and stop conditions. A verbal promise alone is not project progress.
  • VISIT BOUNDARY · Public industry information does not mean site access — Arrange visits through official company, zone or authority channels. Without written permission, do not enter non-public areas, photograph lines, laboratories, storage, access controls or internal documents, or send identity and authorisation files through insecure channels.

What to calculate when assessing a city

Ask every candidate city to answer for the same product, capacity or team size and the same delivery date. City output, company counts and headline-company lists build a shortlist; they do not replace project quotations.

  • FULL COST · Do not ask only about rent or incentives — Includes raw fibre, sorting, scouring and dehairing loss, fibre tests, dyeing, spinning, knitting, trims, samples, rework, care tests, packing, storage, channel, returns and seasonal stock. Compare one composition, count, weight, workmanship, volume and destination; lower content or weight is not a cheaper equivalent.
  • PERMITS · Separate company setup from sector permits — Cashmere fibre, textiles and apparel only. Verify fibre content and labels, animal-fibre origin, dyes and applicable chemical restrictions, fastness, care labels, consumer information, origin and destination textile rules. Review trademarks, styles, patterns and brand authority and do not copy protected design. Animal-welfare or sustainability claims need evidence.
  • COUNTERPARTY · Identify demand, technical approval, procurement and payment owners — The demand owner, technical approver, contracting buyer and payer may differ. Obtain written confirmation of decision order, trial volume, acceptance, payment terms, service and dispute handling.
  • SOURCE DATE · Confirm the year, entity and geography behind public figures — Record city, district, zone, cluster and company figures separately. Refresh capacity, available property, staffing, pricing, permits and access before signing. Do not add incompatible statistical scopes.
  • EXIT · Calculate stop and exit cost before contracting — Verify deposits, leases, retrofit residual value, dedicated equipment and inventory, staffing, data or tooling ownership, warranty claims, early termination and relocation cost. Do not make an asset-heavy commitment without written exit terms.

Understand the industrial geography before choosing a site

Pastoral raw fibre, dehairing in Dalad and textile, garment and brand nodes in Dongsheng are dispersed. Follow one cashmere lot from material to sample over two days and do not add the city’s other resource sectors. The map shows cashmere-apparel roles only; route by booked sites and times.

  • INDUSTRIAL AREA · Pastoral raw-cashmere supply nodes — Useful for goat source, collection season, purchase lot, colour, guard hair and animal-fibre origin records. Herders and cooperative records should enter lot traceability.
  • INDUSTRIAL AREA · Dalad dehairing and processing node — Useful for sorting, scouring, drying, dehairing, dehaired yield, fineness and length and lot mixing.
  • INDUSTRIAL AREA · Dongsheng textile, garment and brand node — Useful for dyeing, spinning, knitting, fulling, pressing, garment testing, design, packing and channel replenishment.
  • READ THE SCALE · A city, a zone and a company are not one address — Map R&D, production, market, validation and logistics nodes before calculating travel by actual address. A functional diagram explains roles; it is not navigation, distance measurement or evidence of site access.
