Kunming
Kunming flower fieldwork should follow breeding and cultivation, post-harvest handling, Dounan trading, grading and auction, and cold-chain delivery because losses often occur between steps.
Kunming and Shilin: Ashima, Sani culture and festival time
Cultural entry points in Shilin include the Ashima narrative of the Sani people, a branch of the Yi, and events such as the Torch Festival on specific dates. They belong to particular communities and times; they do not describe every Yi community and are not guaranteed daily programmes inside the Stone Forest.
- Recognise the setting in which culture actually occurs — First understand Ashima as cultural memory transmitted through oral narrative, song and later forms, then notice how it appears in contemporary performance, public art and tourism. For Torch Festival activities, check t…
- Participate only where the setting clearly allows it — Choose officially announced Ashima presentations, heritage-centre activities or public Torch Festival events. Follow organisers on whether visitors may dance, handle fire or film, and do not imitate ritual elements on y…
- Separate residents’ lives, ritual and performance — Sani is a specific cultural identity, not a generic minority spectacle for visitors. Ask before photographing people, dress details or village life, and follow fire-control, crowd-flow and safety boundaries at torch eve…

Kunming business fieldwork: start with a specific project
Dounan is not simply a large place to view and buy flowers. Production areas such as Jinning send cut flowers to Chenggong for pre-cooling, grading, auction or negotiated trade, then packaging, cold chain, air and road transport, e-commerce and florists. Fieldwork should follow one variety or bouquet specification through cut time, grade, temperature, price formation, packing, transit and arrival loss to judge reliability.
- WHY THIS CITY · How Kunming's business base was formed — Yunnan’s multi-season production, Dounan spot market and auction in Chenggong, Jinning farms, and Kunming cold-chain, air and road logistics form a high-frequency network. The market enables variety and price comparison, the auction provides grading and price discovery, farms determine raw and post-harvest quality, and logistics determines arrival. Strength at one node does not guarantee the whole chain.
- LINKED CLUSTER · Kunming Dounan flower industry — Flower breeding and cultivation, post-harvest handling, auction and negotiated trade, packaging and cold chain, e-commerce, variety R&D and flower tourism form a high-frequency market network in Dounan. Yunnan’s highland climate supports multi-season production. Dounan’s longstanding spot market and the flower auction create price discovery and standards, while Chenggong–Jinning production, Kunming logistics, breeding research and e-commerce expand distribution capacity.
- WHO SHOULD VISIT · Three project types merit fieldwork — Suitable for florists and chains, weddings and events, subscription commerce, hotels and commercial spaces, and businesses sourcing planting material, flowers or post-harvest services. Buyers choosing ad hoc at market without grade and loss standards will struggle with consistent remote delivery.
- HOW TO ENTER · Sourcing, location and joint validation require different routes — Enter through one variety, grade and destination. Record several consecutive days of supply, price and quality, then run door-to-door transport before fixed purchasing or farm partnerships. Flowers are perishable, so quotes belong with cut time, grade, packing, transport and loss.
- PEOPLE AND OPERATIONS · Measure talent by role, location and retention — Flower projects need breeding or planting material, cultivation, crop protection, post-harvest, grading, buying, packing, cold chain and floral or channel roles. Traders know price but may not explain farm quality; growers know varieties but not remote retail. Review the same lot across roles to locate loss responsibility.
- LOGISTICS AND MARKET · Validate service radius with real orders and delivery routes — Flower logistics is governed by time, temperature, hydration, packing and handovers. Air is not always better than road once cut-off, waiting, handling, collection and last mile are included. Species respond differently to cold and humidity, so one temperature does not fit all. Festival peaks need capacity, packaging, labour and alternate routes, verified by test shipments to the destination.
- RISK BOUNDARY · Do not enter payment or asset-heavy decisions under these conditions — Flower loss is often called a transport problem, though it may begin with cut maturity, farm waiting, mixed grades, packing or transfers. Do not enter fixed long-term purchasing if suppliers will not share lot-level time, grade and handover data.
- GO OR STOP · Write down whether the project should continue before leaving — Do not end fieldwork with “keep in touch.” Classify the project as proceed, decide after missing evidence, or stop, and record an owner and the next written milestone. Without sample results, a defined quotation, a compliance path or real customer validation, do not enter long leases, equipment purchases or large prepayments.
Two-day business fieldwork sequence
This is not a sightseeing checklist. Day one confirms capability and project interfaces; day two confirms customers, validation, property, cost and responsibility. Unbooked plants, laboratories, warehouses and production sites are not casual attractions.
- BEFORE ARRIVAL · Fix a specific project and responsible counterparts — Prepare variety or use, colour, stem length, opening stage, grade, daily or weekly quantity, destination, latest arrival and acceptable loss. Book farms, trading or auction meetings and cold-chain nodes; night trading and early harvest follow different hours. Bring one receiving checklist and temperature logger.
- DAY 1 · Follow farms into Dounan trading — Day one proves how one variety is grown, cut, graded and priced.
- DAY 2 · Follow grading and auction toward the destination — Day two tests whether standards, packing, cold chain and transport carry market quality to the customer.
- TAKEAWAYS · Every meeting should produce dated written evidence — Bring back the target legal entity and address, product or service specification, sample or pilot conditions, standard and permit revisions, quotation validity, delivery owner, payment terms, IP boundaries and stop conditions. A verbal promise alone is not project progress.
- VISIT BOUNDARY · Public industry information does not mean site access — Arrange visits through official company, zone or authority channels. Without written permission, do not enter non-public areas, photograph lines, laboratories, storage, access controls or internal documents, or send identity and authorisation files through insecure channels.
What to calculate when assessing a city
Ask every candidate city to answer for the same product, capacity or team size and the same delivery date. City output, company counts and headline-company lists build a shortlist; they do not replace project quotations.
- FULL COST · Do not ask only about rent or incentives — Full cost includes planting material and growing, cutting, grading, market or auction fees, packing, preservation, pre-cooling, storage, line haul, airport or terminal handling, last mile, loss, returns and festival labour. Compare delivered cost per saleable stem, not market price per stem; events also include substitutions, delay and emergency buying.
- PERMITS · Separate company setup from sector permits — Verify plant-variety rights and authorisation, farm inputs and crop-protection records, plant health and quarantine status, interregional or export requirements, package marks, cross-border cold-chain and transport documents. Consumer variety and origin claims must match the actual lot. Obtain new varieties and breeding material only through formal channels without entering restricted areas or requesting non-public material.
- COUNTERPARTY · Identify demand, technical approval, procurement and payment owners — The demand owner, technical approver, contracting buyer and payer may differ. Obtain written confirmation of decision order, trial volume, acceptance, payment terms, service and dispute handling.
- SOURCE DATE · Confirm the year, entity and geography behind public figures — Record city, district, zone, cluster and company figures separately. Refresh capacity, available property, staffing, pricing, permits and access before signing. Do not add incompatible statistical scopes.
- EXIT · Calculate stop and exit cost before contracting — Verify deposits, leases, retrofit residual value, dedicated equipment and inventory, staffing, data or tooling ownership, warranty claims, early termination and relocation cost. Do not make an asset-heavy commitment without written exit terms.
Understand the industrial geography before choosing a site
The flower chain spans Jinning production, Dounan market and auction in Chenggong, and Kunming cold-chain and transport hubs. These are time-sequenced functions, not three showrooms at one site. Follow flowers from early harvest to night trading and next-day dispatch, routing by farm, market entrance, cold store and carrier time.
- INDUSTRIAL AREA · Jinning and nearby cut-flower production — Useful for varieties, planting material, protected cultivation, crop protection, cut time, hydration and pre-cooling. Book farms and do not enter restricted breeding or production areas.
- INDUSTRIAL AREA · Chenggong Dounan trading and auction node — The spot market shows variety, specifications and trade practice; the auction shows grading, bidding and price. Market samples still need traceability to lot and farm.
- INDUSTRIAL AREA · Kunming sorting, cold-chain and transport nodes — Useful for sorting, preservation, packing, pre-cooling, storage, air or road handover and city delivery. Transport tests must use the target destination.
- READ THE SCALE · A city, a zone and a company are not one address — Map R&D, production, market, validation and logistics nodes before calculating travel by actual address. A functional diagram explains roles; it is not navigation, distance measurement or evidence of site access.
