Jingdezhen
This Jingdezhen page covers everyday civilian ceramics from clay and glaze, design and forming through firing, decoration, food-contact testing, packing and dining and retail, excluding sensitive or non-livelihood ceramics.
Jingdezhen: a porcelain city still at work
Jingdezhen hand-made porcelain is not one action but a system of knowledge spanning forming, decoration, glazing and firing. Museums, historic kilns, heritage bases, studios and markets serve different roles in collecting, interpretation, production, teaching and trade. A public demonstration is only one window into the wider porcelain ecosystem.
- Recognise the setting in which culture actually occurs — First identify the space: a museum object, public demonstration line, working commission studio and sales stall each require a different way of looking. Observe how processes connect and how one object may pass through …
- Participate only where the setting clearly allows it — Choose a heritage base, studio or class that explicitly receives the public, and form, paint or glaze only under guidance. Confirm firing, shipping, attribution and fees before starting. A craft session is an introducti…
- Separate residents’ lives, ritual and performance — Clay bodies, glazed surfaces, moulds, drawings and kiln tools may be unfinished works or production assets; do not touch them without permission. Do not enter closed kilns, stores or formulation areas, and ask before cl…

Jingdezhen business fieldwork: start with a specific project
Jingdezhen daily ceramics requires separating cultural fame from order quality. Changnan New Area supports scaled tableware and hotel ware; Zhushan concentrates design, brands and display; Fuliang connects materials and craft; trade nodes such as Ceramic Expo City support selection and transactions. Tableware, tea ware, coffee ware and gift porcelain need clay and glaze, forming, firing, decoration, food contact, dimensional matching, packing and replenishment checks. Coverage is limited to everyday household and dining ceramics.
- WHY THIS CITY · How Jingdezhen's business base was formed — Long craft, modern lines, ceramics education and design, private kilns and specialist markets form the base. Automated forming supports stable volume, while hand decoration supports small differentiation, but firing, glaze and colour still vary by lot. Origin reputation reduces search cost but does not replace lead and cadmium migration, thermal shock, absorption, dimension and breakage tests.
- LINKED CLUSTER · Jingdezhen daily-use ceramics — Jingdezhen daily ceramics produces tableware, tea and coffee ware, hotel ware, gift porcelain and artistic daily products, linking clay, glaze, forming, firing, decoration, design, testing, brands and cultural trade. Centuries of craft, state-factory know-how, private studios, the ceramics university and specialist markets form the ecosystem, where automated production coexists with hand decoration.
- WHO SHOULD VISIT · Three project types merit fieldwork — Suitable for home dining, hotels and restaurants, coffee and tea, home retail, gifts and museum merchandise, and brands needing original forms and small custom runs. A rendering without dimensions, food contact, dishwasher or microwave, packing and replenishment cannot be quoted accurately.
- HOW TO ENTER · Sourcing, location and joint validation require different routes — Enter standard daily ware through one approved set and pilot lot, hotel projects through one place setting or mock-up room, and originals through form, pattern and rights approval. Seal body and glaze, colour and finished sample, then test food contact, durability, packing and arrival.
- PEOPLE AND OPERATIONS · Measure talent by role, location and retention — Verify body and glaze materials, form and tooling, forming, kiln firing, glaze and decoration, food-contact and physical testing, quality grading, packing, design rights and channel roles. Designers approve appearance, material and quality staff safety and durability, and production volume tolerances. Makers or sales alone cannot guarantee a full lot.
- LOGISTICS AND MARKET · Validate service radius with real orders and delivery routes — Daily ceramics is fragile and heavy, and sets need matching cups and saucers, lids and bodies and multiple pieces. Verify inserts, dividers, cases, stacking, pallet or crate, handling, drop, arrival sampling and replacement pieces. Hospitality needs daily breakage and matching replenishment; custom goods need surplus, tooling, decals and post-discontinuation replacements.
- RISK BOUNDARY · Do not enter payment or asset-heavy decisions under these conditions — Key risks are food-contact migration, body, glaze and firing variation, sample-to-volume grade mismatch, false origin, design infringement and transport breakage. Do not enter volume if approved sample, production lot, tests and packing do not match.
- GO OR STOP · Write down whether the project should continue before leaving — Do not end fieldwork with “keep in touch.” Classify the project as proceed, decide after missing evidence, or stop, and record an owner and the next written milestone. Without sample results, a defined quotation, a compliance path or real customer validation, do not enter long leases, equipment purchases or large prepayments.
Two-day business fieldwork sequence
This is not a sightseeing checklist. Day one confirms capability and project interfaces; day two confirms customers, validation, property, cost and responsibility. Unbooked plants, laboratories, warehouses and production sites are not casual attractions.
- BEFORE ARRIVAL · Fix a specific project and responsible counterparts — State that the visit covers everyday civilian ceramics only. Prepare use, form, dimensions and capacity, set pieces, body, glaze and decoration, food contact, microwave or dishwasher use, volume, packing, destination, breakage and replenishment. Bring a benchmark and design-rights description and book design, plant, testing and packing.
- DAY 1 · Build an approved sample from form and materials — Day one turns cultural and design ideas into a measurable, firable and testable product revision.
- DAY 2 · Then inspect one fired lot, packing and dining use — Day two proves the sample can be repeated by grade and remain safe and matched after transport and daily use.
- TAKEAWAYS · Every meeting should produce dated written evidence — Bring back the target legal entity and address, product or service specification, sample or pilot conditions, standard and permit revisions, quotation validity, delivery owner, payment terms, IP boundaries and stop conditions. A verbal promise alone is not project progress.
- VISIT BOUNDARY · Public industry information does not mean site access — Arrange visits through official company, zone or authority channels. Without written permission, do not enter non-public areas, photograph lines, laboratories, storage, access controls or internal documents, or send identity and authorisation files through insecure channels.
What to calculate when assessing a city
Ask every candidate city to answer for the same product, capacity or team size and the same delivery date. City output, company counts and headline-company lists build a shortlist; they do not replace project quotations.
- FULL COST · Do not ask only about rent or incentives — Includes clay, glaze and pigments, tooling, forming, firing energy, decals and decoration, samples, testing, grading loss, packing, pallets or crates, freight, breakage, replacement pieces, channel and custom surplus. Compare one grade, set, pack, destination and arrival good yield, not ex-works unit price.
- PERMITS · Separate company setup from sector permits — Household dining, tea and coffee, hotel and gift ceramics only. Verify food contact and migration, product standards, absorption, thermal shock, microwave or dishwasher use, decals and glazes, labels, origin, packing and destination. Review pattern, trademark, copyright and authority and do not copy protected designs. Verify plant environmental and kiln requirements by project and do not import qualifications from other industrial ceramics.
- COUNTERPARTY · Identify demand, technical approval, procurement and payment owners — The demand owner, technical approver, contracting buyer and payer may differ. Obtain written confirmation of decision order, trial volume, acceptance, payment terms, service and dispute handling.
- SOURCE DATE · Confirm the year, entity and geography behind public figures — Record city, district, zone, cluster and company figures separately. Refresh capacity, available property, staffing, pricing, permits and access before signing. Do not add incompatible statistical scopes.
- EXIT · Calculate stop and exit cost before contracting — Verify deposits, leases, retrofit residual value, dedicated equipment and inventory, staffing, data or tooling ownership, warranty claims, early termination and relocation cost. Do not make an asset-heavy commitment without written exit terms.
Understand the industrial geography before choosing a site
Changnan scaled manufacturing, Zhushan design and brands, Fuliang materials and craft and Ceramic Expo City trade are separate areas. Follow one daily-ware product from design and materials through forming, firing, packing and actual use without architectural, industrial or other non-livelihood ceramics, routing by booked kiln, plant and trade locations.
- INDUSTRIAL AREA · Changnan New Area daily-ware manufacturing node — Useful for body formulation, automated or semi-automated forming, drying, firing, grading, testing, packing and volume scheduling.
- INDUSTRIAL AREA · Zhushan design, brand and decoration node — Useful for shape, pattern, colour sample, decals, hand or digital decoration, brand and small development. Design rights and actual manufacture need separate checks.
- INDUSTRIAL AREA · Fuliang materials and craft and Ceramic Expo City trade — Fuliang supports clay, glaze and craft source; trade nodes compare products and channels. Display goods still need factory, lot and test traceability.
- READ THE SCALE · A city, a zone and a company are not one address — Map R&D, production, market, validation and logistics nodes before calculating travel by actual address. A functional diagram explains roles; it is not navigation, distance measurement or evidence of site access.
