Jiaozuo occupies northwestern Henan between the southern Taihang Mountains and the Yellow River. Foothill springs, river-control traditions and coal mining have all shaped the municipality. Xiuwu, Qinyang, Mengzhou and Wuzhi have distinct landscapes and histories. Jiaying Temple concentrates Wuzhi’s institutions of Yellow River management, but it cannot represent Yuntai Mountain ecology, Huaichuan farming, tai chi communities or mining districts. Each mountain, river, county town and industrial neighbourhood needs a precise location.
