Huizhou: villages, water systems and seasonal life
Huizhou culture is more than white walls and dark tiles. Water systems, lineage spaces, building crafts, festivals and seasonal food sustain a living environment.
- Recognise the setting in which culture actually occurs — In Hongcun and nearby villages, follow how canals connect lakes, ponds and homes, and how historic buildings serve domestic, public and productive roles.
- Participate only where the setting clearly allows it — Choose public heritage centres, workshops and scheduled festivals. Customs such as autumn drying, fish feasts and bench-dragon dances are seasonal and community-based.
- Separate residents’ lives, ritual and performance — Historic villages are not film sets. Halls, ancestral buildings and homes have different access rules; do not cross into a private home without permission or touch historic carvings.
